Hello All!

Mental note do NOT get attached to anyone in this show! You will end up sobbing. The Expanse is brutal but also brilliant. The characters are all so layered and the way that they crossover is also exciting to watch. At least when we lose characters we do gain some as well. Today's character was the Dr! He's a clever bean, figured out about the Protomolecule and wants to confirm his thoughts with facts. Possibly dive deeper into his story next ep?

Much love

Errinwright probably stayed seated because he wet himself after Avasarala's insane, iconic, dressing down.

Isak Haugerud

Wait, so Epstein actually did kill himself? 😉

And the next phase of the Expanse starts! Even though we are part way through the second season, this is basically the start of the second written book of the Expanse series (Caliban's War). Also, the Martian marine's name is Bobbie Draper. Her rank is Gunnery Sergeant, which is why everyone calls her "Gunny" or "Gunny Draper". It sounded in the debrief that you were referring to her as Gunner as if it was her first name.

Kevin

Yep, "Shots fired" from Avasarala. She was 'playing her role' for a while, but she is definitely not being subtle now.

Kevin

In general and without any spoilers ;) -- I know it's disappointing to lose characters, but maybe trust that there aren't any 'redshirts' in this series (nor anytime where death is taken lightly)? As an example from this episode, even the death of 25 people we never met is remembered and has a real impact to Alex's insecurities in the scene between Alex and Amos.

Kevin

You really need to be paying attention to catch her first name. The marine whose helmet shows Sa'id calls her Bobbie in the scene where he suggests she use her femininity for the benefit of the team, and she responds with "I use weapons as weapons" (first episode of season two). I suspect most people don't catch it because his accent is really thick at that moment, it isn't in the captions and other people start talking almost on top of it. You can infer Draper from her helmet shown multiple times. Everyone calls her 'Gunny', but if they explained why anywhere up to this episode, then I've missed it on multiple re-watches.

Michael Abberton

You know, it is certainly possible that they haven't said her first name. I read the first 2 books before I watched the show, so I knew it going into season 1.

Valcor

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but 2x05 was the end of book one. So that's probably why it felt like such a huge episode. The season endings don't really line up with the book endings. So basically this is the beginning of the next book.

Valcor

Think you missed a key plot point during the scene of Naomi launching the protomolecule missle.

Polly

I think 'Gunneh' is the way that someone with Dakara's accent would pronounce 'Gunny'. Could be wrong.

Ian

Don't let game of thrones syndrome stop you getting attached to characters dak be they last a few episodes , a season or throughout the show the characters are great and don't worry you are always welcome to join me in team drummer 🙂

Robert

Where to start, Fred has the missiles. What he plans to do with them though, not to clear on that. Chrisjen laying the smack down the way she did; I would NOT want that woman mad at me. I agree with Holden, the protomolecule needs to be destroyed. It's too dangerous to be kept as leverage. Without it, the various factions can come together to forge a peace. Naomi seems to have other ideas. As for what happened on Ganymede, it seems that Jules Mao is still intent on starting his war. I could be wrong on that point, but if I'm not, the question becomes ... why?

Beat Conductor

A note, you didn't mention it, but when Naomi "sent the missile into the sun", she actually hit start simulation, and ran a test, but didn't actually send the missile.

Beat Conductor

That scene with Amos and Alex and the flag is a great insight into the mind of Amos. The line, "The way I see it, there are only three kinds of people in the world, bad ones, ones you follow, and ones you protect." The "you" in that sentence is Amos. So he doesn't think of himself as one to follow, and he sure as hell doesn't need protection. That only leaves one option. Amos is one of the most complex characters I've ever seen put to screen.

Beat Conductor

I didn't see anyone else mention this tid-bit in the comments, but the actor that plays Amos, Wes Chatham, took the short story "The Churn", which is basically the origin story for Amos, to a psychologist. They sat down over a few sessions and tried to figure out, the best they could, that if someone went through the events that Amos had, how would they behave. This then informed Wes' performance of Amos.

PongPong31

You'd be hard pressed to find another show that is crafted with so much care.

One if my favorite snippets from the book "A hundred and fifty years before, when the parochial disagreements between Earth and Mars had been on the verge of war, the Belt had been a far horizon of tremendous mineral wealth beyond viable economic reach, and the outer planets had been beyond even the most unrealistic corporate dream. Then Solomon Epstein had built his little modified fusion drive, popped it on the back of his three-man yacht, and turned it on. With a good scope, you could still see his ship going at a marginal percentage of the speed of light, heading out into the big empty. The best, longest funeral in the history of mankind. Fortunately, he’d left the plans on his home computer. The Epstein Drive hadn’t given humanity the stars, but it had delivered the planets."
