Hello All!

This one was intense! There was an instant jumpscare to wake me up followed by multiple close calls with me thinking Peter was figuring Alt Olivia out AND then the dreaded intimate moment with Fake Polivia!! Topped off with Newton ending it all in prison! YIKES!

Much love

Dakara x

So, that is the shapeshifter version of cyanide pill ...

As it was commented when this was shown for the first time - Peter had sex with Olivia for the first time, but UNFORTUNATELY she wasn't in her body...

I know people were really mad at Peter and ok, fair enough, he is a bit of a himbo when happily in love lol but if the thought of a switch never crossed anyone's mind they would not be looking for differences. And the things he noticed she immediately explained in a way that makes total sense. I'm extremely biased because I love Peter but I genuinely don't get why people would hate him for this. Like one of your viewers said - it's frustrating because we know. He doesn't. Anyway, as always I'm impressed by your post episode discussion. You're really fair and balanced, and it's much appreciated. It's Faith with Riley all over again and I hate this. Not the storyline because if done correctly it has potential to dive deeper into the meaning of consent and it'd be really interesting to see a discussion centered around male consent too. (It's been 15 years since this episode and as a society I don't think we've progressed as much as we like to think we did.) But kudos to the editors for putting this really unsettling music in the background and pairing it with a literal death scene. It's still so incredibly disturbing to see. I don't think Fauxlivia wants any of this - she might like Peter fine but I do think she's aware she's crossing all the moral boundaries and she genuinely cares about Frank. And obviously Peter would make a different choice if he knew the truth. It's incredibly twisted and I think a lot of hate for Fauxlivia comes from this decision. And ok, it's fair to hate what she's doing here. Also the title is a play on Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" so it's 2 episodes back to back inspired by classic sci-fi literature. I suppose that answers my question from yesterday ;) I don't remember reading it tbh but I have vague memories of watching the og Blade Runner. I did re-read "The Man in the High Castle" when amazon made the show a few years ago and I enjoyed both. Put it on your list if you like alt-history.

Wasn’t the assistant behind Walter, Angel Hanna from Supernatural? And I don’t remember if I felt this back when I first watched it but I miss Lincoln in our universe when I was watching this with you. He has such a presence to him

With Fauxlivia it's the bangs in front and the eye liner that subtly make her different.

This reaction coming out merely hours after this week’s episode of Severance (highly recommended btw) is wild, no spoiler for that show but to say that they have similarities (specifically for this episode) would be a massive understatement, so crazy how ironic the universe can be 😂.

aaaand we're back to the part i hate of this storyline. i hated it with adalind shaede, and i hate it here. i don't blame peter at all; of course i wish he had listened to his gut and noticed both for his own sake as much as olivia's, but i fully blame fauxlivia. she made this choice, she let a soulless machine goad her into becoming more like it. between the literal act and taking over olivia's life and relationships, she's a rapist in every conceivable way one can be one, i don't care how she justified it to herself. it's so frustrating because you can tell she knows how bad it is but she doesn't try to think of alternatives at all, like, idk, showing vulnerability to peter which likely also would've worked to help him trust her. nope, right to assault because the machine that doesn't understand emotional bonds said it was the only way edit: oh hey, thanks for choosing my comment! lol

You were right, it was Senator Van Horn that interviewed Peter in 3x1, although he would have already been a shape shifter at that point. Fauxlivia looks so different because she's wearing a lot of make-up. Our Olivia doesn't wear any. Fauxlivia has also bleached her hair so it's a lighter blonde in this episode. I really like the parallels in this episode between loved ones not knowing their spouse is a shape shifter and Peter not suspecting Fauxlivia. But as Peter said, he has noticed differences but he's making excuses for those changes 😬 It's interesting how these shape shifters have grown to love their family members. We're led to believe they're heartless and their only purpose is to complete their mission, but in this episode they appear far more human. Probably not something William Bell intended! For me, I think I hated Fauxlivia on first watch, but on rewatches I definitely sympathise with her more and I'm glad you do too. She's been put in an awful position and she has no choice but to carry out her mission because she believes the fate of her universe is in her hands. Looking forward to the rest of season 3. I really enjoy this story arc

The episode that made us all love shapeshifters (or if not love than at least sympathize with them a little). They took what had up to this point been monsters and added a whole new dimension to them, turned them into sympathetic beings with the ability to love and care. I love the actors they select for these roles, they are character actors whom we've seen on other shows but are very good at adding depth to what they are given to work with. By the way Dakara, your analysis of these episodes is so good, you are so in tune with these characters you say things all the time that make me think "Hmm, I never thought of it that way before". Thank you for watching my favorite show with me.

Oh boy there are going to be a lot of comments about this episode, i personally lie on the side that enjoys the Fauxlivia storyline a lot and like others have already mentioned i also enjoy how much they played with that theme of dual/hidden identity in this episode and how much a person can come to care for another even though at the start it was just a mission, when Walter says “pretending to have an emotional connection caused a real one to form” when talking about Van horn and while he is saying they are showingFauxlivia’s face mmm interesting… Anyway, i absolutely understand and empathize with people that don’t like her and/or the storyline because of what she/it is doing to Peter specifically in this episode and to Olivia in the broader sense but i can’t help it i find her a compelling character with a very interesting plot in this arc and i enjoy how much we get to see her perspective in this episodes, we really get to see her inner turmoils and doubts and we come to understand why she makes those choices eve though we are repulsed by her actions against Peter. Anyway, to talk more broadly about this episode, this is for sure one of my favourite in this first part of the season, great tension, great suspence and great characters, both the primary and secondary, loved the subplot with the new shapeshifter that gives way more insight into how they lived function in the long term and how much they can become “human”. When it comes to Newton’s death i’m of two minds, on one hand i do like it because it raises the stakes for the season and it makes Fauxlivia’s situation ever more dire and complicated but on the other hand i do think he was a bit underutilized overall, especially considering how much of a big deal his entrance was in season 2 with Belly trying to prevent them from awakening him, don’t get me wrong what we got with grim was great but maybe we could have gotten a bit more. God i always feel so bad for Peter when i get to this episode, even outside of the last scene and what that will do to him, it’s just to heartbreaking to see him so happy with this version of Olivia that even thought he says he clearly saw the differences since she came back from the other side he just won’t allow himself to put two and two together because it would be so devastating to find out what his subconscious probably already knows, so incredibly sad. Loved your reaction and especially your discussion, as always you did a great analysis of the situation and when it come to the things you said you hope you’ll see in the next episode well i won’t spoil you but i don’t think you’ll be disappointed XD.

The Man in the High Castle is an amazing show. Although I loved it up until the last minute of the final episode 😭😂 I've never read the book though. Philip K. Dick seemed like an interesting character. I read that at some points in his life he experienced hallucinations and believed he was living two parallel lives, one as himself and the other as a Christian from the first century. It was those experiences that influenced a lot of his work.

Dakara, no need to worry about the writer's strike: it was in late 2007-early 2008, before Fringe premiered in autumn 2008. While it affected season three of Supernatural, Fringe didn't have any unexpected hiatuses during its run, to my knowledge. While the romantic in me deplores the Fauxlivia/Peter situation, it sure makes for some effective storytelling tension and a grand opportunity to see Anna Torv flex as an actor. It's only because I've already seen the plot before that I can sit back and enjoy seeing the little things - as you noted at one point in the ep - that are just ever so slightly OFF about Fauxlivia-playing-Olivia, since she only has a dossier to work from, not implanted memories. It's neat to see how Torv does that. But on my first watch I was as conflicted as you are!

I've not been commenting much due to dealing with health issues, but this episode was fantastic. The whole series is great and I regret not watching it when it originally aired. Ok, so I'm assuming evil Gordon Ramsay is gone for good and I'm happy about that, but will also miss the character as I like Sebastian Roché; he was in an episode of BONES, by the way. We are speeding through this and it's exciting to get two episodes a week. I'm going to definitely add this series to one of your reactions that I'll rewatch over and over again. Thanks Dak, I always look forward to your latest uploads. You're the best!

DB

@Rick lmao but I was in diapers when it came out! I definitely watched it at some point (I think my dad had it on vhs) but might have been too young. I'll give it another watch at some point. It's only been 40+ years 😆

DB

@Katie I was just googling his life and damn, definitely a character. Undiagnosed mental illness and drugs rarely make for a good mix ;)

DB

@Rick absolutely no need to be sorry! I loved reading your comment. I knew nothing about it and now I do :)

DakaraJayne

hope you're doing okay Brian, take it easy and sending well wishes your way <3

Thank you Dak, I'm trying my best.
