So, Walternate has this 'wonderful' technology to transfer memories/personalities, HOWEVER, he could not imagine how resilient would a human brain be if it was treated with Cortexiphan at an early age. The only thing Olivia needed to retain/keep her grip on reality was an anchor, and we know what/who her main anchor is - Peter!

Lincoln: "Someone's gotten bossy" Over there, he is the leader of the Fringe team of 3 and Charlie and Olivia do not boss him around; over here, Olivia is the leader, and she tells Peter/Walter/Astrid what to do. Her true personality is seeping through...!

Watching it now and was this one Flowers for Algernon inspired on purpose? Genuine question. That first scene actually reminds me of a different piece of media - the "something's got to stop the flow" scene in Ink. Lovely indie film iirc tho haven't seen it in years.

I love Seth Gabel. He’s gorgeous lol

Of all the Redverse alternates Astrid is probably the most different from their Blueverse counterparts. Although, not specifically stated in the show, it has been confirmed by the writers that alt Astrid (or Austrid) is autistic. Jasika Nicole has said that she based her performance on her RL sister who is also autistic, fact that the writers did not know when creating her. In an interview she describes how just dressing up as alt Astrid changed her demeanour even to the extent that John Noble would speak to her and based upon her response would say 'Oh, you're alt Astrid'.

"Real is just a matter of perception" is another favorite quote of mine. I love that Charlie is THAT person for Olivia even on this side. And I adore Lincoln as a didn't-know-I-needed-him-until-I-saw-him kind of addition. He really elevates the season for me. While Frank is more of a weird one because I appreciate that his existence as a character signifies the differences between Olivia-s but I still see the similarities since he's always going away, therefore allowing for a lot of space for Fauxlivia. I think Olivia didn't use the oxygen because the memories may very well have solidified but instincts/habits are a whole different thing. And they're harder to bypass. And it's beyond perfect that she sees Walter in his most fragile state and that Peter personifies the part of herself that 'belongs with him' and belongs with our world. That's my ship right there! <3 Generally speaking I love every episode of this season, and I find the ones set in the other universe quite fresh. The redverse is exciting and new and "lighter" just like Fauxlivia. But, of course, on my first watch, this excitement was accompanied by uneasiness over the whole switcheroo situation.

I really like this episode. I find Milo's abilities so interesting. I also just love seeing the alternative universe and noticing all the differences. They did a good job of keeping the differences subtle enough so the viewer can still relate to this universe. When Milo was speaking to his sister and saying what she was thinking before she said it, did that seem familiar to you? I actually spotted The Observer in this episode. Up on the bridge where Olivia first spots Milo and just before the camera pans to him, the camera sweeps past The Observer. Here's a list of differences between universes from this episode that you didn't mention: - They had an Aruba War - The 'United States Postal Service' is called 'U.S. Mail Service' and has a slightly different logo - A bus has an ad for Rappaport's Toy Bazaar which closed down in the Blueverse in 1981

So, all last weekend I did a "Fringe Binge" from about mid season 1 until 3x02. This is a first watch for me and I just love this show and your reactions. Walternate is terrifying. Gonna jump into this episode now, thanks.

I think it's absolutely inspired by Flowers for Algernon on purpose, using the idea for plot/theme, as more than one sci-fi show has done. Though they did twist the ending a bit here, with Milo keeping his new intelligence, probably in part because the ep lacks the time to deal with him becoming aware that he's losing his newfound abilities while keeping the focus on Olivia. However, the ending still works for me, as one could argue that Milo retaining his super-intelligence separates him from "normal" life just as much - if not more - than his previously below-average IQ did. I think it's intended as a funhouse reflection of Olivia's situation, which occurred to me when she was squabbling with Frank about telling Broyles about her vision of Peter on the street. I would argue that her reluctance to tell Broyles is a sliver of our Olivia coming through, as she seems to have a greater distrust of authority, and other people in general, than AltLivia, likely due to her tragic childhood. She's also now trapped in a mind that isn't her own due to Walternate's meddling on the larger canvas on which he considers himself still a scientist. For Olivia, keeping what she's been given mentally could mean permanent isolation from those she cares for in the Blue'verse, while losing that "gift" and regaining herself could also result in her death-by-Walternate and permanent separation from them due to death. So, just like Milo, who felt separate from people because of his low-IQ, and is absolutely separate from regular folk with his new cognitive function, Olivia is in a tough spot and either option has potential drawbacks. The straightforward response to your question kinda got away from me there...

This ep contains another great illustration of the idea that just because a scientist CAN do something, doesn't mean they SHOULD do that thing, though it's largely in the background of the story. If Milo was solving differential equations in his head while reciting pi to 1000 digits after 1 treatment, giving him 4 more was a terrible thing to do, particularly as they claimed to be trying to help their subjects live independently. Which was also bullshit, if they deliberately let the effects of the treatments wear off later, once the subjects and their caretakers were accustomed to the changes... The more I think about this experiment, the madder I get. If the average IQ is 100, and Milo at an IQ of 56 was considered so different from the average person on the street, extrapolating from that, an IQ of 144 is just as much a departure from the average, though generally not as apparent in everyday life. If one treatment raised Milo's IQ by say, 100 points, continuing to raise it with more treatments just made him different from the average so far in the other direction that he was no more normal than he had been before. In fact less so, as his mental acuity meant that he lost touch with emotions and connections to other people, seeing the world solely in terms of equations predicting effects from a cause. From where did you recognize Michael Eklund? Shortly before this he'd been the "It was a vampire" guy with the giant beer stein in Supernatural's Monster Movie (the black and white one from Season 4).

So, this reaction was amazing, as per usual...but, eh...you mentioned 'Hannibal'. Are there 'Hannibal' reactions? If there are, then please...I need those. We all need those. The world needs those. I'm being overly dramatic, of course; but, we need those. (We need those.)

Love this episode, love Milo, love the whole scenerio of probablities and chain reactions. Love that Olivia, our Oliva did something Milo couldn't account for and she went against the protocol and was able to apprehend him. The whole way this episode was constructed and the way it falls into place is just fascinating and then we have the whole inner struggle that Olivia is going through. What I really see in this episode though is how much Peter and Walter really mean to her and how much she is holding on to them even though all of Walterrnate's science is being used to transform her. He can't account for her heart...and who she values and who she loves. There 's a part of her that he can't reach with his science.

And this is where the love part of my love/hate relationship with this arc comes in because I LOVE this episode and this part of the storyline. I love seeing that our olivia is still there underneath the surface of the implanted memories and that those small, instinctive differences DO make a huge difference. Did you notice that when she’s talking about her sister and looking in the mirror at 30:13, she’s got a double reflection? Specifically of her eyes which, you know, window to the soul and all that. Fantastic. I love seeing her interact with the people of the redverse and them kind of meeting our olivia bit by bit because of those minute differences; their olivia might be more of a cowboy but apparently she never breaks protocol, and in contrast, ours is buttoned up and low key but we’ve seen her break protocol several times (like lockpicking, lying to superiors, disobeying direct orders, etc). A very interesting contrast. I’m also not totally convinced that their Olivia would’ve made the emotional connection with Maddie that ours did. She may have but she comes off as far more impersonal and distant in her work than our Olivia who is on record saying that her emotional attachment makes her better at her job. This episode has always stuck in my mind because I loved seeing not just Olivia fight back, but the red fringe team interacting with her (and Charlie clocking her quicker than Lincoln because maybe the bond between our Olivia and Charlie really does go that deep and the only reason she’s closer with Lincoln on this side is because their Olivia is more detached but our Charlies seem pretty damn similar). God I just love the redverse episodes of this arc

I'm guessing ethics in clinical trials are a bit more murky in the redverse. I really don't get why they had to reverse the effects of the drugs at the end of the study. That's not how clinical trials work. It just seems very cruel.

PaulReacts

I think that was just a playful thing between them. Fauxlivia is not really the kind to be yes sir person so I don't think Lincoln saw anything amiss.

I don't know what are you on about Dakara, this was an awesome episode. One of my faves from this early season 3. I love the way they play with probabilities and the way, if we use more of our brain which this drug I assume gave access to for Milo, it's amazing what are we capable of. It almost seem like magic but if we can calculate the probabilities and construct scenarios, we can basically manipulate time. It's such a great episode for me. I dare to say one of top 5 maybe even 3 MOTW episodes of Fringe. In this episode we also learn more about the other world and the new Fringe team and their interactions, I really do love their banter, you can tell that Liv, Charlie and Lincoln make a great team, trust each other and care about each other. Really enjoyed the moments with Liv and Peter but the case itself was the highlight for me.

I only did the pilot here on patreon. There wasn't much interest at the time for more 🤍
