Hello All!

OUCH, my heart guys! The way Polivia were there for each other SO EARLY ON and not really know it - IS WILD to me! What a freakin' show and story! I feel so much pain for Olivia and just wanna protect her during this time of her life. I hope her 'parental' figure, gets exactly what he deserves!!

Much love

I've been waiting for this episode to talk fully about the character of Peter at least up to this point. For me, the most fascinating character in this show is Peter and not enough people realize it because for instance we saw so much from this character and only in S3 are we truly starting to fill in a lot of his childhood. Many people give Peter a hard time because he didn't see through Fauxlivia's deception and now that we've seen his childhood, it makes so much sense to me why he fell for it. Here is a kid who was stolen from his universe and then promptly and severely gaslit by Walter and Elizabeth. Poor Peter keeps saying something is wrong, you kidnapped me, this is not my home and they keep saying no you're wrong, your sickness is making you think that but it's untrue. Finally after months of this, Peter just decides that for his own sanity he needs to go along with it. This is devastatingly sad! Also Walter experimented on Peter to see the effect of passing over universes and yet he gaslit the memories of being kidnapped from his mind so now all that Peter remembers is being experimented on by his father. In season 2 episode 5, Peter tells a story of how he used to have nightmares about Walter kidnapping him and then Walter had him repeat a mantra of "I will not dream tonight. I will not dream tonight" over and over in his mind and that kept him from remembering what Walter had done to him. This is some crazy and deep gaslighting that went on. All these events kept Peter from trusting his own brain. He has had to grow up just pushing aside when things feel wrong. His whole life has been things feeling wrong. On top of that.... at the age of about 31 he finds out that he had been kidnapped and he doesn't even belong in this universe. This shattered his entire sense of self!! Also when Peter mentioned his concerns Fauxlivia manipulated him by saying stuff like "Going to the other universe made me change" also Peter is pushing these feelings aside because he's never been in a relationship with Olivia so he's just thinking "this is Olivia when she's in a new relationship." On top of that Peter doesn't have anyone in his life at that point but Olivia. He's understandably estranged from Walter, his mother is dead, he just found out that his biological Dad is into some shady shit. It's too unimaginable to imagine that Olivia is not really Olivia. Mind you, the whole idea of alternate dopplegangers is pretty new to most of these characters as well. Once I heard someone say something to this effect and I think it's so true. There's a direct line from 7 year old Peter crying and saying "I know I sound crazy, but I'm not" and being subsequently gaslit into repressing all the memories of his childhood to adult Peter's anger at Walter and saying in S1 "Being crazy was something he did to us" and also his bitter sarcasm during a lot of the early Fringe events. Peter has a deep seated fear of being disbelieved or seen as crazy. This sarcasm is a defense mechanism. On another note, the soulmatism of Peter and Olivia is incredible. The way that they met as children but didn't remember because of the respective trauma that they experienced and the fact that they blocked all those memories around that time and then coincidentally met again as adults. They were truly meant to be. Also how they are in a field of white tulips and in Fringe white tulips are a symbol of hope. Peter and Olivia understand each other in such a deep way. Both are experiencing different kinds of abuse. Both are longing to be happy and to belong. Both are such closed up people who don't open up easily but have found each other and can open up with each other. Polivia is truly beautiful!

That is a great summary of Peter’s character in the show so far and i agree that this episode is the final piece to really understand why the Fauxlivia situation was so hard on him and why he doubted himself so much when he recognized the difference between the Olivias and why that betrayal hit him so hard.

I really think that an argument could be made especially considering how little actual presence she has had in the shoe so far Elizabeth might be the most impactful character, every time she is in a scene she breaks my heart and she casts such a long shadow on the show as a whole, which is crazy considering that she has been in only in 3 episodes at this point , such a great character in both universes, we really got to see the beginning of her struggles that will eventually lead her to take her own life later on, that last scene with her and Peter when she turns around after gaslighting him is just harrowing, truly. The child actors in this ep were on point , just great casting, baby Peter especially was so expressive with his eyes, you could really see him struggling to stay sane. The Walternate reveal at the end is so good, such a creative way to make him find out where Peter is and in general this ep gave another great insight into him and his marriage and how it got broken, like you mentioned they are doing a great job in general this season to really explore his grief and how he reached this point in the story and on the other end we got to see just how far Walter went with those trials in order to bring Peter back, i’m really glad that they didn’t pull their punches in showing us this version of Walter, so much so that by the end you are not really sure if he is going to say anything to the stepfather because it would jeopardize the progress he has made with Olivia and that moment of doubt that you have as the audience is great. I loved how much more they connected Peter and Olivia in this episode, she was the one the was supposed to bring Peter home and many years later she does actually bring him home because she kind of become that home for him of at lest the main reason to return. Glad to see that you reaction to seeing the white tulips is very much similar to mine XD, they are such a powerful symbol in this show and the fact that Peter and Olivia were in a literal field of them is not random imagery and carries great significance.

olivia is peter's motivation for staying in this universe twice over lol. this is definitely retcon: the episode; the kids are no longer 3-4 years old, they're all about 7-9(?), olivia's firestarter routine happened much older and apparently didn't kill anyone, and walter was now using the kids primarily to try to get peter home instead of primarily as soldiers/weapons. oh, fringe *wags finger*

Elsa Millie

I wouldn't say that the Walter's objective part was a retcon. For one, I think that Walter and William Bell had different objectives. But also these experiments may have started even before Walter took Peter so I think it's fair to say that Walter's motives could have changed. It may have been a situation where Walter started with one objective and then after he took Peter he realized that there was another reason. Additionally when Walter told Olivia that he was creating soldiers/weapons that was prior to Olivia's knowledge about Peter so clearly Walter wasn't being entirely honest about his reasoning. I think all those other arguments can be explained away as well. If these experiments did start prior to Peter being taken then that would explain the differing ages. The firestarting incident could have happened twice in theory. Fringe is actually pretty incredible when it comes to continuity. I'm not saying that there no continuity issues but there's very little. Fringe has like 4 overarching plots throughout the whole show and it's all very tight and fits together so well. It really feels like they planned the show ahead of time and planned everything to a T.

olivia and the others were 3 originally and that's what's shown in the first video and that drug induced chase scene. by that time, we don't even know if peter's illness had presented itself yet but we do know that walter and bell had only barely figured out the window. your theory is that they were experimenting on those children for 5-7 YEARS before even knowing if crossing over was possible, let alone that the other side would want to start a war with them, especially considering that pre-abduction, there would be no reason for a war. it doesn't add up. additionally, if a fire like that had happened before, walter and the others seemed very surprised by it; if they knew that olivia had that capability when scared, then they never once mentioned trying to make sure to trigger her travel ability instead of her firestarting. considering it apparently ended up with someone dying last time, you'd think they'd have mentioned it and definitely wouldn't have put another subject's life on the line by having him scare her while being right next to her

Elsa Millie

I can't say too much because it would spoilers for the future but I think that William Bell had his own reasons for those experiments that had nothing to do with Peter and the damage Walter did to the other universe. I won't go into it in this comment section because it has to do with S4 but I have no qualms in believing that those experiments could have been occurring prior to Walter kidnapping Peter. And if they were going on prior to that. Bell may have been the only one who's experienced that first fire incident and then Walter experienced that second one thus his surprise at it occurring. I don't know just food for thought. I'm of the opinion that most things that are touted as continuity errors can be explained away. Some people love to find continuity errors but it's my hobby to poke holes in those supposed errors.

Neumann

i also have no problem believing bell could do something shady except in that video, walter is the one saying "obviously she was frightened, william...it's okay, olive" so he WAS there. i also am able to rationalize pretty much any "plot hole" that people always try to claim, i'm pretty damn good at suspending disbelief and not needing every little plot point or character action spoonfed to me because more often than not, connecting the dots is pretty easy. believe me, i've railed against people in other fandoms yelling "plot hole!" about things in order to justify their own dislike of the project (game, movie, show, whatever) just because they refuse to do some very basic critical thinking; it's infuriating and wildly discouraging and i despise it. this is not that.
