I'm so excited you've gotten to this episode! This is an episode that I love so much and most of it I don't necessarily enjoy but there's something about the vibe that I love. Peter and Olivia give this episode such a romantic vibe and that last scene of when Peter and Olivia reunite is simply chef's kiss 😍😍 Olivia allowing her memories to be overwritten with the new memories to be with Peter is a controversial thing in the fandom and I don't see why. I think it boils down to a question of why would a powerful woman allow that to happen to be with a guy? But I think that whole idea is reductive for a few reasons.... 1. Olivia realizes that she is the same Olivia that had been dating Peter before his erasure from the universe. It wasn’t like she thought she was someone different but fell in love with Peter and decided to allow herself to take on the memories of his Olivia. Olivia starts remembering everything from prior to his erasure and believes that he is her Peter. So in a way that is empowering. She is in essence saying “I know that my memories from that previous timeline was stolen from me and I am taking it back. How dare you, observers, take my memories without my consent” 2. Olivia’s old memories are leaving her brain and being replaced with her true memories from before Peter was erased. There is nothing she can do about that. And try as much as Walter could have... There's no guarantee he could do anything. Especially since he has no concept of what's going on and incorrectly assuming that Olivia is wrong about those memories being hers. So what was Olivia supposed to do? Live her life in tortured pain because she couldn’t remember those past memories? Or give in to these “new” memories that make her so happy? 3. Those people who think it’s fucked up she gave into the memories of Peter are assuming that Peter is the only reason she gave in. Sure, we know that Peter was a big reason.... possibly the biggest reason she gave in. But I think it’s reductive of those people to assume Peter was the only reason. We don’t know everything that Olivia went through in the revised timeline and how that affected her psyche. For all we know, she went through more trauma in the revised timeline and chose the memories from the original timeline cause they were happier. She did after all say that the memories from her past timeline were from “a better version of herself.” It may not be a better version of herself only because of Peter. I would argue that it's probably for a few reasons at least.

I’ve been waiting for this ep for so long hahahahaha

Will watch it later but I assume there is a shortage on tissues near you now ? Tears of joy of course heh

Yeah unfortunately people get too focused on the “better version of me line” in this episode and i think that’s mainly why it became a somewhat controversial choice in the fandom, to me it’s one of the clearest choices in the whole show mainly for two reasons, the first one you mentioned yourself she can’t really do much about the fact that this new memories are overwriting her old ones and at the rate they were fading she probably only had a few days before they became permanent and secondly if i have to be honest i sort of agree with Olivia’s statement, the memories she is getting are actually from a better version of her and i do think the main difference is the presence of Peter but in saying that i don’t just mean the presence of Peter in her life as a romantic partner but his presence in general which had allowed her to make massive strides into finding the better version of herself even outside of their romantic relationship. I think in general people who get upset about this choice (outside of persona preference of course) are looking at the situation too superficially without accounting just how much the character of Olivia had grown in the first 3 seasons.

I agree that people are looking at it too superficially. I mean there a lot of differences between the two timeliness. One major thing they mentioned before is that in the revised timeline, Olivia actually shot her stepfather. Who knows how that affected her life and psyche. I would imagine it did affect her a whole hell of a lot. That's just one reason the other version could have been a better version of herself and there could be so many others. But also something I just thought about is that in the revised timeline, Olivia didn't have Peter around to help her deal with the death of her ex partner John. Like It or not it's a canon fact that Olivia didn't have any friends aside from her sister prior to Peter and her sister lived far away from her I believe (at least she did the first timeline). That would be a tough thing to get through alone and would affect her in the moment and also going forward.

WE’RE HERE!! Man that final scene just rewards you for everything they made us go through in the first half of the season, that conversation with September that then leads into the Polivia reunion is just a perfect Fringe sequence. I cannot tell you how happy i am still to this day that they decided to go with the rout of Peter being “home all along” and not him having to go back and that’s mainly for two reasons, the first is that just from a writing standpoint it made no freaking sense to just develop for half a season all of those new versions of the characters we knew with new backstories and then in the middle of the season go: “never mind Peter is going back to the og timeline and those characters are all gone” it just rally would have been a complete waste of a season imo and secondly just from a logical standpoint it would make zero absolute sense if Peter could actually go back to his timeline because thar timeline can’t exist and that was the whole point of the final scene of season 3! I know that the “love conquers all” line is often used as a negative but i maintain that here it was used in the best possible way and i love that it was September specifically that said it. (in his own way 🤣) Now as to why only Olivia has been getting her memories back i think the show infers that it has mainly to do with the cortexiphan injection and thanks to them she was able to recollect them and maybe even materialize Peter back herself?… we’ll talk more about that later on when we get to the end of the season. The case of the week was certainly amongst the creepiest ones of the whole show and yeah the whole pheromones thing felt a little bit thin and mostly done as a parallel to what was happening to Olivia, Peter and Lincoln. And in regards to Lincoln i will say that i think they played it a little bit too heavy in this episode with his unrequited love, i’m saying that because i don’t believe they were able to build up his relationship with Olivia enough to really make me (personal opinion of course) feel that bad for him in this situation, like yeah it sucks that Peter has kind swooped in and monopolized Olivia’s attention away from him but the way this episode plays it makes it seem like their relationship was much deeper that it actually was when to me at least it felt like it barely reached the “crush” phase but maybe it’s just me and i’m the heartless one 😂. I once again loved how much you got into this episode and this storyline specifically, you really were on the edge of your seat 😂, specifically i adored your reaction to the scene of Peter and Walter in the lab, it really felt like a full circle moment when this version of Walter called Peter a better person than him, it’s a great callback that let’s us see just how much growth he has gone through, did i mention that i freaking love this show?!?!

Mirko Paskota

Christian, great points! Every single one of them!!

christian chirico

Completely agree, i mean you don’t really need to look any further than the first episode of the season where Olivia literally says “i know what it’s like to have a whole in my life, it’s been there as long as i can remember” and it’s pretty clear that it’s not just about missing her romantic feeling for Peter but missing that human connection that she craved and really allowed her to open up like we saw her do in the og timeline, Peter is the catalyst not the whole thing.

christian chirico

Also how could i forget, the BUTTPLUG is back!! 😂😂😂 The observer cilinder that we saw in ep 4 of season 1 and never understood what it did is back and now we sort of know what it does 😆.

I remember the first time watching this season and until the end of this episode, it was agony but ended with such relief!

3dbadboy1

Oh, the space suppository :)

Steve Mercier

Been waiting on this one just for your reaction to the last 60 seconds or so. Good shit.

SaltyInternetPirate

I think they should have started the plotline with Olivia's memories getting replaced sooner, because this late in the season it feels like there was barely any buildup to it.

YES, FINALLY, OMG! it feels like it's been forever since this show was truly happy and it was needed lol. anywhozil, there's something about olivia just holding that teddy bear alone in the lab that pulls the heartstrings. and just every look on her face this episode makes you wanna hug her, either in shared happiness or for comfort. she really IS emoting so much more openly now; remember in the beginning when it was hard to get any read on her at all? god, the growth! "beaver meant something different in those days" walter, we do not want to hear about your acid fueled sexcapades lmao im with you on the case itself being more than a little iffy. what, does the pheromone mixture also make these women blind? like, are they really trying to say that for a few moments, these women thought this guy was their partner? that being said, i at least appreciate that it was dealing with the central theme of the episode AND that it gave olivia the opportunity to choose the new old memories for HERSELF and not because of peter so i'll give it a pass lol omg september looks almost fond when he says "she is your olivia," and he's almost smiling. michael fricken cervais!
