Hello All!

How dare they treat Walter this way!!! I'm livid, The Observers have some explaining to do and some apologies!! Made me sad hearing about Polivia after Etta was separated from them. You can see how much they adore their daughter and still have so much love for each other. This season feels different but not in a bad way, I'm intrigued how this story will go!

Much love

Dakara x

I think treating this season as a different show is the key to enjoying it. I didn't manage back then but I'm hoping this time it'll go better. Because I really really want to like these 2 last seasons. Humans are so stupidly predictable. No one would be surprised if an authoritarian regime full of mind reading Gestapo was in our cards somewhere down the line. The current state of world affairs is already quite bleak. The air quality thing is an interesting detail. I assume it's because we have polluted the planet so much that the future generations had to evolve and adapt their breathing. And I like the visual comparison of the past vs the future. The pre-invasion full of light and its saturated colours vs the grey, harsh reality of the post-invasion. It's not exactly revolutionary storytelling but it's effective. Plus starting and ending with a dandelion is a lovely touch.

Windmark is supposed to be creepy and hated, so that's clearly a success on you😁. When you look back you can see every season reinvented the show, not just this one. And each one did so more than the last. Season 2 added the shapeshifters and the war, shifting focus away from the monster of the week random crisis. Season 3 fleshed-out the alternate universe. Season 4 rewrote the whole show, and now in Season 5 we have an entirely new dynamic again. Also prepare your tissues before every episode. You won't need them for every one, but they'll be very useful in many. Maybe you can bring back June for the finale?

NO, Dakara, we are NOT bored out of our brains - your post-ep discussions (NOT rumblings) are exceptional! The showrunners explained after one or two season 5 episodes (during the original run) that one of the reasons they really wanted to set season 5 as they did was for the complete flip - up till now, Fringe team was always part of the established law/security/state systems, but now they are the underground resistance fighting AGAINST a (very powerful) establishment...

“Nothing grows from scorched earth” and then at the end Walter sees a single flower (Etta) growing from the asphalt, god this show is good. This first episode is A LOT and i agree that it’s even more imposing if you haven’t watched 4x19 immediately right before because they really just throw you right in the action, no preamble no easing into it and while it’s amazing it can feel a little jarring if you come directly from the season 4 finale. There is going to be a ton to talk about this season maybe even more that previous ones, which is curious considering it’s half the length, but it’s so dense and so unique that there a million points of discussion stemming from each episode, can’t wait! Ok let’s dive in starting with Peter and Olivia because they are the ones that do feel the most different in this opening episode from where we left them at the end of season 4, they are broken in pretty much all of the meanings of the word, that conversation they have right in the middle of the episode is perfect to both explain what happened to them (in a general sense) and their current state of mind and i know, trust me i know that at first impact it’s incredibly frustrating that they are “separated” once again but i find what happened to them so realistic both in the context of the show (glad you brought up the parallels with Walter and Elizabeth) and in the real world, that is something that absolutely happens to couples that lose their children especially if it’s in extremely traumatic events like this one. To bring it back to the context of the show though i really feel like their reactions to losing Etta were perfectly in line with their personalities, Olivia threw herself into work and compartmentalized her emotions so she could help others and Peter instead let his emotions completely run him over and focused all of his attentions on finding Etta, at the cost everything and everyone, he is his father’s son after all. There will be plenty more to talk about them in this season, their journey is going to be an incredibly painful but fascinating one that will explore who they truly are at their core both singularly and together, i can’t wait for you to experience it. Walter as usual gets the short end of the stick by getting his mind wrecked for the 100th time, like you said his mind really is his curse, it brought him his greatest joys and his worst losses, so they had a plan him and September to bring down the observers aaaaaand now it gone 😫, well you knew it couldn’t have been that easy 😂, so how are going to fix this? On Etta i don’t want to spend too much time because tomorrow’s episode really delves into her and where she is at mentally but i just want to continue to remark how freaking good the casting is, not only in terms of looks but also chemistry, she is just perfection and i bought her as Polivia’s daughter from the first second i saw her, the scene when Olivia comes out of the amber is perfect, you can feel every emotion on their faces! I also want to touch on Windmark because to me he is the scariest villain of the show by a mile and that is because he is the first enemy where i can’t see a single redeeming quality, you can’t bargain with him, he is cold, calculating and speak in a soft monotone voice, truly frightening. There’s going to be a lot to explore about him too, he is extremely fascinating. I’m really glad that you are liking the season, your post ep discussion was really on point and based on your wishes for this season i think you’re going to be satisfied by the end of it, this season truly is the boldest swing they could take which is crazy because it’s the last one and they could have really messed everything up if they missed the mark but i think they delivered an amazing final season, you will probably question what they are doing a few times along the way but trust that they will deliver like they have always done!

I'm so excited to see you experience season 5. It has such a special place in my heart. This whole story arc this season was one of many planned from the very start of this show. In my opinion you can really feel it. I of course won't go into any real spoilers. All I'll say is it feels very earned and well thought out. It feels like a really solid and tight plotline. Season 5 was sort of written as if it is a supersized movie. That was the intention of the writers at least and in my opinion they hit it out of the park. There's no other show aside from Fringe where the series finale is my favorite episode of the whole show but somehow Fringe pulled it off. I'm becoming verklempt just thinking about it. The observers are also such a great foe because we've seen them throughout all the show. It's like a slowburn villain. I don't believe that they originally came here to takeover and there's certainly proof that some of the observers had good intentions but there's also little hints early on that they may not all have great intentions. Like I was recently rewatching the early seasons of Fringe and there was a line where someone said that the observers want to "exterminate us". I hadn't really thought much about it until this most recent rewatch but it was some amazing foreshadowing from the writers. Something I love to think about when watching this season is that the characters of Peter, Olivia and Astrid are all around the age of 58 and Walter is in his late 90s. They were ambered so they are literally the hottest and best preserved looking 50 and 90 something year olds lol. On another note, that scene with Josh and Anna kills me! It makes me cry anytime that Peter cries because he doesn't cry a whole lot so when he does it never fails to make me sob. That line where Peter says "I didn't have the will to give up searching for this perfect little soul that we made. Out here all these years fighting for these people and at that moment that she needed her father to protect her, I couldn't do it." It's such a great line and the way that Peter delivers it is incredibly emotional. 😭

How are you on season 5 already??? 😯

It might go down easier if you understand that this season and what happens is inevitable. From the beginning of the show the Observers were the main culprits for everything that's happened, including the war between universes. It was always going to end this way. Once you understand that, everything will make sense in the most enjoyable way. The show runners basically told you how the show is going to end since season 2 episode 3, just re-watch the last 3 min or so of that episode. Everything was about the observers :D and that's the most clever part of this show. Btw you can tell that season 5 was my fav haha.

Lol I actually disagree with most of it. I think the Observers were a concept introduced from the start but without any practical thought behind it. Much less a concrete plan. Because if media experience with JJ Abrams has taught me anything is that he's great at beginnings and really bad at endings. He sets up his mystery box and then midway through leaves it for the other writers to figure out what and how to do something decent with it. Now don't get me wrong- I'm not not enjoying S4 and 5 (granted, S5 so far more than S4 coz that one imo had no actual plot whatsoever). I love this core 4 way too much not to enjoy their interactions. But I will never believe that any of the major plotlines were meticulously preplanned way back. IMO it shows on screen. Sorry :(

PaulReacts

Regardless if they planned it, they finished it perfectly. As far as I am concerned, it was the only way to end this show. The observers have been an integral part of the show from the start and impacted pretty much everything, starting with the intreruption in Walternate's lab. And at the end of season 4, we still didn't know why were observing or why they were so interested in Walter. Now we do!

DB

I don't dislike the general idea of this season as a whole. I think it touches on some pretty intriguing concepts and can be quite thought provoking as is often the case with dystopia.  Plus it's been 15 years and my opinion might change? S4 I still think was a letdown because to me it felt repetitive and ultimately unnecessary. But im liking s5 more already so fingers crossed. And even if it plateaus for me, it doesn't take away from the fact that I love these characters and just enjoy seeing them on my screen. I guess I'm just bitter that blueverse vs redverse was never, IMO, explored to its full potential. Ngl I liked that concept way more than the Observers.

Love that final scene of Water listening to "Only You" and seeing that flower in the cracked concrete - it's gets me everytime! But Olivia's reaction to seeing Etta and knowing exactly how many years, months and days was beautiful!
