Hello All!   

A space episode!! How fitting this week after receiving the awesome Mova Globe off Caz and watching that heartbreaking episode of The Expanse and now Mulder & Scully are at one with Nasa! Who'd have thunk it. Possessed by an alien lifeforce for years to then jumping out of a hospital window was not how I thought it would end for Markus. RIP.

Haha your thoughts about Scully aren't foreign. We all saw the dudes face morph into some alien contortion. Although to be fair to her, she's a medical doctor. She's probably going to put it down to some muscle twitching and spasms or something 🤣

There's an old saying about never meeting your hero's. I remember the Viking pictures and how excited everyone was. The feeling that Mars was next. I also remember the face and all the speculation it caused. Turned out to be nothing though. The whole breaking telemetry is something that NASA CAN do, but they don't like to. It's sort of the equivalent of rebooting your computer, the problem is, that the shuttle would have been out of radio contact with ground control during the process., and that is NOT something that they like. Also there's the very real fear that they might not be able to re-establish the link. Yes, during that period, congress was looking for any excuse to kill the space program. The feeling was that it cost too much and produced nothing of value.

I kept saying while watching this that the astronaut seemed to be in a waking dream, almost. I felt, from the get-go, that he's having anxiety as if he's at odds with his subconscious, so consciously, he doesn't exactly know he's sabotaging things, but he FEELS it.

Since Scully didn't say she saw the face, it's not certain that she did see it (in the narrative), but even if she did, Scully's a skeptic, so her mind definitely doesn't jump to the extraordinary when she sees something...out of the ordinary. She is firmly locked into "What's the possible scientific explanation?" and she goes through all those possibilities. I think the skeptic and scientist mind thinks that if she doesn't go through all the possible scientific explanations for things FIRST, she's not doing her due diligence as a scientist and, therefore, could be written off as disreputable. Once you're labeled a "quack" in reputable circles, you never are considered a valid scientific opinion anymore. I'd be the same way. I want to go through ALL of the possible known explanations first before I adopt a completely out the box theory. That's because I WANT there to be proof of the extraordinary and wouldn't want to be disproven as some wild-eyed quack. Many skeptics don't believe and don't even believe in the possibility of such things. I like to keep an open mind, though. "I WANT TO BELIEVE."

This put the phrase "space ghost" in my head, and I couldn't then stop thinking of Space Ghost, Coast to Coast. But the noteworthy part of this episode for me (besides their use of the famous "face on Mars") was the appearance of Susanna Thompson, who would go on to a couple memorable roles in the Star Trek universe.
