By the way, the guy who played the shape-shifter is the same guy who played the fluke-man (your favorite, I know 😁) and he's also the writer who's written some of the funnier episodes, including "Jose Chung's From Outer Space." He may have also wrote "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" (I think that was the name). Don't remember if he wrote this episode or not.

Another cracker from Vince Gilligan here, one the best comedic episodes of the show. Darin Morgan himself does a great job playing Eddie here, as the man who can morph into any other man, and therefore was able to have sex with lots of unsuspecting women in the area, getting them pregnant with the babies all having tails. Of course the local Doctor gets blamed for wrongly inseminating the women, but as Mulder sees Eddie's backside he can see that tail area. Painfully funny at the start when the girl said it was Luke Skywalker that was the father, and the look on Scully's face when she starts humming the Star Wars theme tune. When Eddie morphs into Mulder it's hilarious when he snaps of the tail of the emaciated body during Scully's autopsy. The actor Forbes Angus who played the Security Guard here who Mulder handcuffs played 5 different characters in the X-Files. Another hilarious scene when Eddie goes to Mulder's office and sits back on the chair and nearly falls off it. Just so funny when Eddie/Mulder arrives around to Scully's flat, and we see them getting drunk, conversing like never before, I would have thought Scully would have sussed it, and of course the real Mulder breaks in at the last minute before anything happened. A great awkward ending with them walking along the corridor. A real fan favourite and one of my favourites from the whole show.

It was fun watching your reactions to this episode. When they were first interviewing the one woman who claimed that the father was from another planet, the way Mulder's shoulders kept dropping. I didn't think it was possible, but her story was to crazy for even him! That the criminal turned out to be someone who could alter his appearance made sense, sort of. There was a similar episode on the original Star Trek. A criminal gained the ability to change like that. That was a fun episode too. The ending was great, the way that Scully was opening up, but to the impostor. You chewing on your knuckles, wanting it to stop, and keep going on at the same time. Then when the impostor moved in for the kiss you were practically jumping up and down.. Then when the real Mulder broke in you pulled your shirt over you head. You were fangirling all over the screen, and I loved it. BTW: I think I did hear a little dinosaur shriek.🤣

I clicked so fast to watch it hahaha! Yes, the actress who played Amanda was a very famous voice actress (Rugrats, Babe, Dexter’s Laboratory...), sadly she passed away in 2014. This episode is definitely one of the most memorable ones and is frequently mentioned by the fandom. It’s really fun to see David Duchovny leaning more into physical comedy. As for Scully not realizing right away that it wasn’t the real Mulder, my theory is that her skepticism is the main reason she doesn’t see it. That, and perhaps a little bit of hope that she might get a chance to have a more relaxed moment with him and a conversation that isn’t just about work. Considering that, even though it’s never explicitly mentioned, she’s sick at this point, it makes sense to me that she would notice that something is different about him but not immediately dismiss it as impossible. Maybe she thinks he’s trying to change things a little between them. Especially considering that in the recent episode “Tempus Fugit,” he surprised her by remembering her birthday for the first time. On the other hand, I think that if the situation were reversed, Mulder would have figured it out much faster, precisely because he would be more open to believing that a switch like that was actually possible.

I was so excited to see your Extremely Normal Reaction to that scene. So nice to see someone who's just as normal as I am about Mulder and Scully. *screams into a pillow*

Darin Morgan makes his return to The X-Files not as lead writer, but as Eddie. Small Potatoes is so good, with Vince Gilligan doing his best Darin Morgan interpretation as a writer. Your faces, excitement, and angst when they were about to kiss were a great reaction to what we all felt originally watching this episode. This was major league trolling by the show, saying, "We know what you want, but we're not giving it to you yet."

Philip Fry

Such a great and memorable episode. It does always make me feel a little sad for Mulder though. Imagine finding out somebody likes you when it's someone else pretending to be you. You, as yourself, not as much. But then, Mulder is no Eddie Van Blundht, is he?

I enjoy the reaction. 😁❤️

I'm really enjoying your reactions to this show! So much to be said about this episode - and I realize that in today's climate, people seem to feel that they need to condemn it outright because of Eddie's skeezy subterfuge. There's no arguing that point, of course. But I feel the show brilliantly walked that line between showing that his choices were absolutely wrong, yet used great humor and a little compassion in telling the story of a guy who just wished he were/had more and never would. By the way, I think that Mulder's reply to Scully about being, "no Eddie Van Blundht" at the end was a teasing reference to the fact that Scully had come very close to succumbing to Eddie's "charms" (even though he had to use Mulder's form to do it) - Mulder's usual flippant way of lightening up (or avoiding) a situation that was heavy with unanswered questions.
