I thought Gethsemane was a great finale similar to Anasazi and leading into brilliant S5 openers on a par with The Blessing Way and Paper Clip from the start of S3. This episode is beautifully shot with the snowy Canadian Mountains, and the production value here seems to have really stepped up a gear, it looks like Movie Quality. Just love the retro footage at the start with Carl Sagan and others, and then the utter shock of Scully apparently identifying Mulder's body in his flat, and the hearing chaired by Blevins from S1 E1, telling the FBI top brass that she believes Mulder has been duped all this time. Interesting exchange between Mulder and Scully on the stairs saying to him you don't need proof as you already believe. Of course when Mulder arrives up the mountain nearly all of the team have been killed, and we have Scully attacked by the man over the ice samples. Scully's brother even though he seems a bit of a jerk, we can understand his upset about not being told about her Cancer, he really dislikes Mulder because he almost blames him for Scully's situation. Scully identifies the D.O.D. attacker ( yes it's John Finn, Lt. John Stillman from Cold Case ). The practical effects with the prosthetic E.B.E. are exceptional. Great scene when Scully tracks down Kritschgau. As was saying brilliant editing here with all the strands of the story being tied together. We then have the double cross of the team member who was only injured in the shooting. Kritschgau does his best to convince Mulder it's all a lie, but Mulder does not believe any of this. They want him to Believe The Lie, but do All Lies Lead To The Truth.

Nice reaction. There were a lot of questions that needed answers, and the writers delivered on most of them. The only question now is, who to believe? It's entirely possible that Mulder staged his death, in an attempt to get whatever organization that was manipulating him to look somewhere else. The bad part is, that in order to fool them, he would have to fool Scully. If she was convinced, then the "cabal" might also be convinced. On the positive side, if this shadow organization is truly satisfied that Mulder is out of the game, there is a chance that Scully might have a "miraculous" recovery from her cancer.

Imagine watching this when it originally aired; sometime in May - as seasons traditionally ended in May/June and returned in Sept/Oct - and having to wait months to find out what's going on. The suspense was excruciating. Even though Mulder's character was wildly popular (as was Scully's), stranger things had happened on TV, and there was no guarantee given us that Mulder would return. It sounds weird, but I kind of miss the days when we just had to sit in anticipation and suspense for a few months. And yes, everyone did go nuts! I remember some co-workers talking just outside my office about it - one woman said (she almost sounded ready to cry) that if Mulder was really dead, she was never watching again! Sometimes I forget what an impact this show had back in the day!

Great season finale.

3 weeks until my favorite episode. Can’t wait for it. I hope that you will be watching the movie here after season 5 concludes.

I remember watching this finale as a kid with my mum. I was really young. So the first time around the wait wasn't too bad for me. I vaguely just recall being kinda excited when S5 eventually came around. I have a lotta memories of the show, not perfect but certain flashes seared into my mind. Mostly scenes that terrified me. XD
