Hello All!

This one got me in the feels guys! Giles being all supportive of Buffy is everything! Happy Birthday Buffy, sorry it was such a rough one :( lets hope things improve soon! Angelus is on one and I hate to see Angel this way. It hurt to see Willow upset too over the Xander & Cordy relationship. I'm so protective over her! Great ep that truly hurt my heart.

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy fired a LAW (Light Anti-tank Weapon) at the Judge. They fire High Explosive Armor Piercing rounds designed to destroy tanks, so it makes sense that it would blow up the Judge

Todd Bolton

I’ve heard before that the Judge was a disappointment but I think that’s not seeing what he did for the episode. While our attention, at times, was focused on him, the episode, which you acknowledge was great, developed around it. Look at the Judge as a McGuffin, a misdirect (even comic relief – the Blue Smurf and “preparing looks a great bit like sitting on your ass”). He was needed for the story. If he had been anything to write home about, he would have taken away from the emotional impact of the real story by crowding it with too much irrelevant excitement. The writers (with Whedon at the head) knew what they were doing. They usually did.

"....he's totally not gonna call ya......" XD

You’re one of us now. You care. We can’t tell you what is ahead because discovery is part of the journey, but we will be with you all the way to the end and we will care.

Christopher simeon

It is cool that you got whedon using angel turning back into angelus as a metaphor for when a guy sleeps with a girl and acts like a different person. All season we have been hearing about how bad angelus is and now we get to see it. You caught the dru and buffy parallel with them wearing similar clothes and the dreams forshadowed buffy being the cause of angel "death" and angelus returning but now angelus wants to do what he did to dru. Drive buffy insane before he kills her.

Aranforge Gaming

Oh man. Everything really gets dialed up to 11 now. Welcome to the dark side of Season 2, where the show really begins to evolve past Good and into Amazing, especially for being on in 1998. I was 16, just like the characters on the show. Oh. I understand that apparently there is some correlation from Vampire Diaries regarding this character arc. Please know TVD literally copied and pasted tons of Buffy plot and lore to make their show.

Ailish

The way that Dru and Angelus just bolt the second they see the launcher gets me every time 😭

Alan Pownall

The show has some really great stuff but, for me, Buffy and Giles' relationship is where it is at its best. The thing about Angelus that this episode highlights is just how evil he is, the Judge could kill other vampires and said Spike reeks of humanity but Angelus is just completely devoid of it.

Meredith

100% agree- that moment in the car with Buffy and Giles always makes me tear up a bit.

Meredith

When SMG cries we all cry. She’s such a pro at the emotional scenes throughout the series.

Ed Green

This is what I imagine to be the TV equivalent of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience. A really profound episode, also reminds me of the His Dark Materials novels.

That’s Not Acting

So much to talk about here, in the comment section is doing a great job. We love Giles and this episode shows us once again why. We love ours, we love Willow, we get annoyed with Xander a little bit… Buffy and Angel. I’m not traditionally what would be known as a Angel shipper in the Buffy fandom. I can’t go any further into that for fear of spoilers but I tend to think that but is better off on her own, especially at this point in her life. But the Buffy/Angel relationship is definitely my favorite in the series because of how well it was written and how well it encapsulates the “tragic love” arc. It is truly a classic example of it. Oh, and asked for spikes accent: I don’t know if you know this now but it actually is fake. James Marsters is an American actor and he put the accent on after he was cast (he actually auditioned for the role with a southern, Texan accent) and he got the accent from working with Anthony Stewart Head because, as you may or may not know, Anthony Stewart heads real accent is much closer to spikes than the sort of posh, upper crust British accent that he’s putting on for the show.

Dave Ford

Still, the accent is already a lot better than in School Hard - not least because he's not talking through such bad prosthetic teeth by this episode.

Tim Pierce

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up by now, but despite the show seemingly implying that the sexual act is what made Angel lose his soul, it wasn't. It was afterwards when they were snuggling that Angel had his perfect moment.

ghostofdurruti

In retrospect, I think Jenny was dealing with more than just the trauma of being possessed by a demon and learning about Giles' dark past after 2x08. I think she was also thrown by the fact that Angel, the very vampire she'd been sent to Sunnydale to keep an eye on, had saved her life.

Ed Green

I've seen your eyes as they fix on me; what is he doing, what on earth's the plan, has he got one? You'd better give me some pointers since you are the big rocket launcher and I'm just the shotgun

Bart Aansorgh

This episode is soo good. Heartbreaking, but sooo damn good. Buffy's looks are absolutely broken. Willows reaction to Xander and Cordy is perfect, and then with Oz too. To me this also feels like the moment where Giles really starts to cement himself as a parental/father figure for buffy. Giles deff takes buffy's side here, regarding Jenny. But I agree that Jenny was juggling more. Though with this knowledge my opinion is that Jenny was harsh to Giles after her possesion. I get the dissapointment on the judge, but at the same time i knd of like how they did it. Cause the - no weapon forged - can kill me is kind of a trope. And this is doing that slightly over the top. So i kind of like that. Theres also some interpretation of it somewhere, where it stands for buffy's innocense being "blown up". Dakrya nearly made an appearance there. It will happen :).

G.Un.

People have the tendency to read too much between the lines, trying to find some ingenious metaphor in the smallest details. If only they knew how many things, on a show like this, are improvised or put together at the last moment to solve yet another unexpected problem. Joss Whedon himself stated that they really wanted the scene with the rocket launcher because they thought that it would have been really cool … and damn, it is!

Bart Aansorgh

i agree. i think the other interpretation i mentioned came from the fact that a lot of buffy does represent growing up and the demons at times are representations of the problems we face in a way. and that is something i think joss whedon did say (i could be wrong though). but this one was a bit left field :p. hence the mention xD

Josee (Griffe)

I never saw it like that before. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It makes more sense than him not killing (or at least not trying to kill) Buffy because he is similar to Dru and Spike and have human emotions. Which the Judge establish he doesn't have. (The other obvious reason is "do not kill the main character love interest in mid-season", but I guess we are not getting meta here.)

G.Un.

Nitpick – How did Angel find out about Jenny's uncle, where he was or just about his existence? Could we find an explanation? Probably. Did they give us one? No. This is just me of course, but I have the sensation that David Boreanaz had more fun playing Angelus than Angel. Aside from the Buffy-Giles relationship, that became more obviously the father-daughter type that had already begun to develop during the first season, I would also like to highlight the friendship between Buffy and Willow. They clearly become close already during the previous season but, I think, it's in this episode that we can feel that, what was a friendship, is becoming the special and unique connection that will be one the cornerstones of the entire series. Also, although of course we have already seen the beginning of it in previous episodes, and it is something that will continue to develop, I don't know why but when Willow said: “Giles shut up” in such blunt and straightforward way it's the time she started to become “number one” (little star trek reference, the first officer), the go to person to take decisions when Buffy is not around. Quite the opposite of Willow, and not in a good way, we have Xander, a character with probably more flaws than perks that always bothered me because I never could figure out what was wrong exactly with him. Of course I know that one problem is that he's not a unique character but the result of the composition of the works of different screen-writers during the years, but this is also true for all the other characters and I don't have the same issues with them. This is my last theory, you tell me if it will fit. He's delusional. He sees himself like in the dream in “Teacher's pet” (1x04) and when reality doesn't fit with his delusions his behaviour can become … let's say unpleasant. Said this, probably Cordelia or a Cordelia-like character is exactly the type of person he needs to keep him real.

Nica Marie

So, let's talk about Xander. When Buffy doesn't report in his first instinct is to rush to the factory to save her. Putting all interpretations of his motivation aside, his first instinct is to go TOWARD the danger for his friend. Which we see again in the hallway wben he takes the cross from Jenny, moves TOWARD Angelus and saves Willow. Now, have you ever noticed how often Xander goes directly toward the danger? Go back and watch and you'll realize he does it repeatedly. Then, if you pay closs attention, when he talks about himself it's always derogatory. He never builds himself up. So maybe, he goes toward the danger because he values his own life so much less than the lives of nearly everyone else around him.

Allan Cornett

One of my favorite vampire scenes ever. Angelus biting the blond smoking woman then blowing out the smoke after he bit her.

Whisper_dvm

I both love it and hate it. It looks cool but doesn’t make sense anatomically. He’d have to puncture her trachea along with her carotid/jugular and then swallow her blood and inhale the smoke at same time? I can hand wave it away but it always bugs a small part of my brain.

Allan Cornett

I look at that scene as a metaphor. Angelus is like a nicotine addict who after a century finally has a cigarette.

Ian

cracking episode this just goes to show you want a job done right get a bazooka :)

Leonard Ledung

I know TVD took alot of inspiration from Buffy, but you really can't say that Angel took it from them, when it's the other way around xD Yes, i'm a bit triggerd :P Still loving these reactions!

DakaraJayne

🤦‍♀️Whichever one came second is obviously the one that took inspiration. It’s so easy to fumble over words when recording lol, you don’t have another person there to say ‘you mean the other way?’ ‘Yes! My bad’ 😂🙈

Addie Pollack

The whole point of the Judge was that it was a deliberate misdirect. It wasn’t lazy writing, the character was designed specifically to fool the audience into thinking some random demon would be the big bad for the season so that the audience would be even more shocked when it turned out to be Angel. Whedon even said the Judge’s main purpose was to prove to the audience beyond any doubt that Angelus was back and that he had no humanity. I personally am very glad they got rid of him very quickly because he on his own was not a very interesting villain, and his death paved the way for a much richer second half of S2.
