Hello Folks,

Earshot - what a whirlwind, one of the funniest moments & one of the most serious topics all in one episode. Mental health is rough guys & this episode shares that - what appears on the outside isn't necessarily what's going on in the inside. Jonathan was in a low spot & I'm glad that Buffy got this gift just in time to save the day. Having the gift to read minds is my worst nightmare as far as gifts go. This ep showed those hardships. The humour was needed in this episode to keep things a little lighter, Buffy's reaction to Joyce hooking up with Giles was GOLD!

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support, you're all amazing!

Much love & stay safe out there!

Dakara x

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reaction 3X18-1.mp4

This one was actually delayed from airing when it was supposed to because of the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado due to the subject matter. I think it aired just before season 4 premiered. It was a great episode, though. It had deep subject matter to discuss such as high school bullying and it’s effect, depression, and just high school culture in general. Plus some comedy gold, especially when Buffy got clued into the fact her mom and pseudo father figure hooked up 😂

In the 13 years since I first saw this episode, I come back again and again to Buffy's line about how everyone doesn't notice your pain because they're too busy with their own. Every time I feel alone or more troubled than average, this line always helps with empathy and reassurance.

Juan Sanchez

Ah the iconic background guy characters head turn at the end when they hear Buffy tell Giles if he's not too busy having sex with her mother...best background characters extras reaction there 🤙

Ian

another fun episode having that mind reading power would be fun to begin with but holy moly by the end no thankyou its a massive no from me :) i thought the score in this episode was really good as it often is i just noticed it more in this one :) total agree on the ending being just perfect lol poor giles he didnt know where to look or what to say i bet so he just walked into the tree instead haha cheers for another cracking reaction dak and thanks for the laughs

I think this is one of my favorite episodes. It does such a good job balancing the comedy (which is VERY funny in this ep) and the seriousness. And the serious talk about pain and loneliness and suicidal ideation is handled with a great deal of sensitivity, IMO (despite that last jibe at the end).

Just wanted to give you a heads up dakara. For the first episode of buffy s4 please don't watch the opening credits. Also same if you do angel. First episode only.

Collinson

This episode is amazing. The writing is so good the mixing of comedy with a serious subject could go so wrong if done badly but they manage it so well. I think the "Am I saint Buffy?" line is more her coming back to reality. I mean is it really fair to ask her to go to Prom with someone she's not attracted too? Also I just love the two scenes with Joyce and Giles. "You had sex with Giles!" "If you're not to busy having sex with my mother!" Just instant classic.

Dave Ford

Oh, I do hope you actually saw that final frame of the episode, because you were almost covering your face in delight of the dialogue - but there's a lovely bit of physical humour which ASH (Giles) improvised during the filming.

Dave Ford

And, as I understand it, SMG lobbied hard to ensure the episode was aired at all and not cut or shelved. Good for her, it's a fantastic episode.

Michelle Denny

Interesting fact about Danny Strong who plays Jonathan is that he has won multiple awards for writing and I believe directing as well. He was involved with the show Empire and miniseries Dope Sick among others

This is in my top 5 stand alone episodes of the season.... It showcases what makes Buffy so special as a slayer (and as a person). She's properly insightful -what she says to Jonathan is so compassionate- she's not trying to undermine Jonathan's pain (even when she thinks he intends to murder people), by drawing his attention to the pain of those around him, but instead intends to reconnect him to them through it. When she says 'i'd rather do it this way'... The way Buffy has interpreted her role as being broader than a footsoldier or a warrior is so beautiful and speaks to her character and approach- curious and empathetic.

To me this episode always was quite different. Its a different pace and completely different vibe than a lot of the other episodes this season imo, and I like that. Its also one thats a bit further removed from the main plotline of the season, which is very like buffy to do before they ramp up to the finale :). I like how they portrayed the reading thoughts. At first it seems interestnig and fun, then you realize some drawbacks. and then it goes crazy. it shows all aspects of it very well. And as you said all the inner thoughts here really displayed how well they know the characters.

They do tackle a couple tough topics in this episode. In fact, the broadcast of this episode was delayed by several months because the Columbine High School shooting took place a week before it was originally scheduled to be aired. A few bits of dialogue have not aged well, considering the worsening of school shootings in the last 20 years. It's truly ridiculous how available guns are here in the US. Anyway, on a much lighter note, I loved your reaction, especially to some of the funny bits, like where Cordy's thoughts are exactly what she says, and the Joyce/Giles sex reveal. 😄

Well, after joining your patreon I've spent a week binge-watching your full Buffy reactions (and very enjoyable it was) and have now caught up. And, apart from a couple of drive-by posts, waited until catching up before commenting! As for this episode, apart from the obvious plot etc, there's where this fits in the season. To me, this is, at least partly, a commentary on Faith. When Jonathan says "Stop saying my name like we're friends! We're not friends! You all think I'm an idiot", he could be Faith thinking about Buffy & Co. And when Buffy says "I don't think about you much at all. Nobody here really does. Bugs you, doesn't it. You have all this pain, and all these feelings and nobody's really paying attention", "Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they're too busy with their own" and "f you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It's not. It's deafening", they could describe Buffy, Giles and company's almost complete neglect of Faith. It wasn't intentional, even neglectful, just unfortunate. Faith had a neglected and damaging childhood. Such people often become suicidal (Jonathan) or homicidal (Faith). Granted, most do not become either, but most do not deal death every day (and we got an example of what this could do to even Buffy). If you ever watch this season again, like I've just done, with this in mind, you can see it clearly. The other comment I want to make is that there's a lot of foreshadowing in this show in casual conversation - like Angel foreshadowing his own fate at the end of season 2. You might want to look out for it.

It's such a strong line/message! People never truly know what's going on in a person's life. Everyone has their inner demons & struggles, this was a great yet hard topic to explore & it makes me happy to hear that it has helped people!

DakaraJayne

such a key episode in my opinion. I'm on the same page as you, I'd hate that power - this episode showed every aspect - the fun, the hardship & the responsibility of having said gift. Thanks for watching Ian, glad you enjoyed it :)

DakaraJayne

Thanks for heads up, I will be closing my eyes through the opening credits!

DakaraJayne

always appreciate your comments Josh & you taking the time to watch. Makes me happy knowing people are enjoying the reactions, helps that the show & episodes are always so enjoyable for me to watch <3

DakaraJayne

Oh for sure, I never expect her to go to prom with someone she doesn't want to. It was the 'short' comment that she made (after knowing how much that bothers Jonathan) was a little too much for me. I also love the scenes between Joyca & Giles & I want more of them!!! Hahaha. It's so gooood. Thanks so much for watching Collinson <3 hope you're enjoying the content

DakaraJayne

I re watched when editing & I can't get enough of moments like this!

DakaraJayne

Thanks for info :D he's very tralented!

DakaraJayne

It's so brilliantly done! Like you say for a stand alone episode it really held our attention & one to remember for sure too! Thanks for watching Briony (such a lovely name by the way).
