Please use the link at the bottom of this post if the link above doesn't work for you. Thank you.

Updated Note: I filmed this before knowing about the episode resolution issue on my end. All future eps after 4x08 should be sorted. Thanks I tried fixing in post but the audio and frames are out. 4x09 onwards should be completely fine.

Hello buffyfans,

RILEY?!! The secret's out! He works for Walsh after hours as a soldier to hunt monsters & experiment on them? Spike has been captured by them but we all know he can't be contained for long! The scene between him & Willow in the dorm made me laugh so hard, as well as being terrified of course! It was brilliant. Let's see what the next episode brings us...

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support, you're all amazing!

Much love & stay safe out there!

Dakara x

Season 4 really digs deep into the different aspects of masculinity being challenged. I wrote my dissertation on Buffy and Supernatural years back (representation of masculinity in fantasy shows), and season 4 was a big part of it. You have Giles - unemployed from being Watcher and Librarian, not needed anymore Xander - feeling useless to the group and an outsider as the group dynamic has changed, eager to help anyway he can because of it. Even goes on to say he wants to incite some evil to have something to do! Spike - now he has the implant from the Initiative he's basically impotent in his vampireness, kind of de-masculating him - that scene with Willow directly compares it to sex. I would go into it more but I don't have time lol. I would say I got a 2:1 in the dissertation (2nd highest grade). I may be able to share some of it in the discord but there may be spoilers in for it to be all shared. I hated media theory but writing about my favourite shows helped!

Dakara: "Me! Not the hot part, obviously, but the spillage." Me: "... don't sell yourself short." :-) That commercial break after Spike's assault on Willow... as someone who had a crush on the character from about 5 seconds into her appearance in "Welcome to the Hellmouth", that commercial break in 1999 was the longest 6 years of my life. :-)

Aranforge Gaming

No reaction to James Marsters joining as a regular in the credits? I always love watching people freak out about that.

AlyAdmirer

She commented on it, dryly. :-) I admit it, I missed her noticing it the first time I watched, too. Had to double back to catch it.

Regarding the Spike and Willow scene, as always the writers have an amazing ability to play on relatable topics within the supernatural theme of the show. Not many guys will admit to having a similar conversation with a girl, after failing to 'perform' - "this has never happened before!". But the men among your Patreons know that it does happen more often than people think, obviously it has never happened to me! ;) ;)

Loved reading this! Thanks for sharing <3

bless your heart Darryl. Oh I bet it felt like a decade haha, I love Willow so much & the thought of anything happening to her makes me panic!!

DakaraJayne

Oh I spotted it! I didn't freak out, underwhelming reaction I'm sure, sorry about that but I kinda figured he'd be around for more. A series regular is huge though!

DakaraJayne

haha, of course of course. I do love how they do this. It reminded me of the Buffy & Joyce coming out scene. Brilliantly written. Thanks for watching & commenting Roy <3

No no, nothing to be sorry for, I didnt mean it like that :) There's lots of fun stuff coming this season. We lost Oz but we got Spike out of it. Not a terrible deal, all things considered.

Lol I don't seem to have been the only one waiting for this episode hoping to watch you freak, seeing James Masters on the title card in the opening.

I have to admit, I love the chemistry between Riley and Willow. I know they are going for Riley and Buffy, but he and Willow play off each other really well and I could’ve seen them going there instead. I laughed when I saw the visceral rage on your face the minute Parker showed up 😂. Riley did earn major points by dropping him. Riley kinda bumble fucking around when he’s around Buffy was amusing. That’s most of us when we get around someone we’re really into. Not all smooth talkers 😉

That Willow/Spike scene is one of my favorites too. It's so well written and funny. Spike is definitely not your typical vampire. And I know when I first saw this, I didn't put 2 + 2 together about Riley being one of the soldier guys either until the big reveal, so you're not alone there. Great reaction, really enjoying re-watching these shows with you.

Nicholas Corgan

The showrunners chose the perfect way to make viewers like Riley quickly.

I liked Buffy being clumsy in the cafeteria and class. Having super-strength isn't always an asset. lol

The BLOOB

"are guys REALLY that bad?" As gross as Forrest's words are in that scene... they'd be nothing but the pg version of most rooms full of guys. Imagine that table, but on HBO... that's real life.

Graham Nickless

Maybe Buffy's love of cheese began when she was turned into a rat!!! The Dingoes song being played at the party (Fate), was the same song they were playing in The Bronze when Oz first saw Willow, (Inca Mummy Girl). Not a stretch to think that off camera Oz would have told Willow this and that this would have been an extra special song for them, hence why the associations were "big"

I always found all the dialogue between Riley and his pals quite cringy and honestly hard to listen, instead I never had a problem with anything Spike said in the episode. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's because I see Spike as a 126 years old vampire who define himself as the big bad, so, anything abrasive, offensive or deceptive he says sounds to me just like him being in character. Aside the major iconic scenes like the one with Xander and Harmony or the dialogue between Spike and Willow, there's also another little scene that I adore. During the party, when Willow describe Buffy's mood to Riley, her plans and intentions for the evening only by what she's wearing. It shows us how close they have become at this point, the depth of their friendship and how they manage to understand each other without say anything, and all this without using any of the words mentioned abouve. Show, don't tell. This is what I define damn good writing. I don't know what to say, I'm kinda a sucker for good writing. Talking about writing. I liked your comment about the term “corting” used by Riley. It's not the first time that I noticed the use of … dated expression in the show. In one of the next episodes, 4x09, they even use an expression that personally I never even heard before. I'm curious to find out if you'll notice too or if it sound weird just to me.

I hate seeing Willow pain. It was nice to see that even in pain Willow still cared about other though. Trying to help Buffy find companionship, if Riley had come looking to hook up with Buffy she probably would have thrown him out the window. Being supportive to Spike while dealing with his vampiric impotence. Willow really just wants to be a good person. As for throwing him out a window, if you remember back to season 2 it took several gypsies to put Angel's soul back in him and Willow did it on her own so she is very powerful she just need to work on controlling that power and find the confidence in herself to do so. Can we get more Parker being punched out, please. You think he is trying to improve himself when he approaches Buffy in the Foamy episode then he pulls this. admittedly I don't always paint my exes in the best light but to talk about her like she has an express lane in to her pants is just the height of bad behavior. Loved seeing Harmony and Spike together again, they are like that train wreck couple that everyone around watches closely so when the implode you can get good seats and enjoy the show. Harmony and Zander epic fight, enough said, belongs in the fight hall of fame. It is nice that Buffy is really trying to put Willow first right now. When Buffy was hurting Willow was there for her and now she is doing the same. Even when she was fighting the army guys and hunting Spike. She wasn't looking for a win or to finally finish off Spike, her only concern was keeping Willow safe. The writing in this series is always amazing and it only gets better with only a few filler episodes in between the story. Can't wait for the next episode, my second favorite episode of the series is only a few away. Keep up the amazing work, I appreciate sharing this journey with you.

Another mention of cheese in relation to Buffy. Here, Willow says Buffy likes cheese, which Riley later uses to let her know he likes her. In Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, Buffy rat had "a sudden need for cheese". There have been other references to Buffy and cheese, some more oblique than others. Something to look out for.
