5 months later... There's a small moment that says so much that I wanted to bring up. When Buffy is running out of the vamp house after seeing Riley, Spike says that he thought she would know. This is Spike pretty much wanting credit, wanting to be seen as the good guy in Buffy's eyes. But she wordlessly then runs away and the camera stays on Spike's face and you see it change. You see the realization that what he did just hurt her and it bothers him. It feels like an important moment in Spike's journey to me but I've never seen anyone talk about it. You're much more fair about Riley and Xander than I have ever been during this episode, but I won't rant about them here. Great reaction/analysis, as usual. :)

Interesting! I've always interpreted that look as disappointment that he wasn't getting the bonus points with Buffy that he expected. Like, I never perceived that he genuinely cared about Buffy's feelings in that moment, but that he was more upset that he didn't get what he wanted out of it. I'm not saying either interpretation is right or wrong. I just like seeing how two people can see the exact same expression and perceive it so differently!

I totally understand Riley. She was shutting him out all the time. And the one time she really needs her loved ones (her mom in the hospital) she shut him out again. He knew they were over long before she did. He said yes to the miltary and to feeling something from someone else. Buffy screwed up with him. Not that he made it easy, but what else could he do if she never actually let him in? EDIT: Posted this before Xander...yes, exactly what he said. I love that guy.

You are correct Janel, confirmed in Triangle by what he says in his rant at the Buffybust before he hurls the box of candy at it. Spike is a dangerously obsessed stalker at this point and it is disturbing IMO.

First let me just get out of the way that I don't really like how I think the episode blames Buffy a little bit for Riley doing his weird vamp-biting-cheating thing. That's on Riley. All that said, I think that Xander was pretty much 100% right with his speech to Buffy. She has been holding back and I do think that is what would have brought down their relationship regardless. Riley was hurt and he should have just told Buffy and had this fight a million years ago, but his hurt is legitimate. What he did in response was not. The thing I liked most about Xander's speech is that he's right that Buffy should have made an active choice. Be with him and ask him to stay or cut him loose. Choose which one she wants and do it. Waiting and hiding and letting things just happen to her instead of taking an active role is not a good course of action. As far as the end when she chased after him and whether she actually did truly love him. I don't think she did, really. As we've established, she never really let herself open up to him the way you need to for that. But I think that after her confrontation with Xander, she realized that she could and wanted to try.

I think the Lord would approve. This show is a great story, after all. And he thought the Game of Thrones ending was pretty great, so he'd probably be a Buffy/Riley shipper as well. The problem with Buffy and Riley's relationship isn't her being withholding (like he seems to think) or him being needy (which it's seemed before to me). It's that they're fundamentally not long-term compatible. He's a soldier and she's the Slayer. The Slayer needs to shoulder a heavier burden than the average human - that's just part of their cross to bear. Their best compatibility is someone with their own darkness, which as Spike says, Riley doesn't have. Even Xander and Willow have darkness Riley doesn't, with their histories of parental abuse and neglect and being outcasts - that's part of why they're able to be friends with the Slayer. Riley's place is as a tool of the military. He's been a tool a lot this season and now he's gone off to do it properly. I think Buffy's human side is what makes her choose to let Riley's feeder run initially - thinking of her as someone in need, like Giles implied. Someone on the edges of society, like herself. Then I think she thinks about how the woman is a vampire, and she's the Slayer, and the Slayer has a job to do - slay vampires, even while being human themselves. Buffy can perhaps relate to her, but she's still a vampire to slay.

I can't say I love this episode, but I agree with you about how much weight it had. It was very well written, and an effective way to get Riley out of the picture. Because let's be honest, that relationship was played out - as you yourself noted there was no longer any spark there. I do think the argument between Riley and Buffy was interesting, because I felt both of them were trying to express their feelings, and yet neither of them really succeeded. I don't think the two of them have ever communicated well, and that was on full display here. It took Xander's outside perspective to break through everything to make Buffy realize her feelings (although one could argue she was just afraid to lose Riley in that moment, because I don't think she ever REALLY loved him). Meanwhile, I agree with you about that conversation making Xander fully realize his own feelings for Anya. His profession of love for her at the end is the only part of this episode that actually brings tears to my eyes, because it's so genuine and heartfelt. Great reaction, despite not saying a lot during it - it was clear you were captivated by what was happening.

When a reactor is silent and not saying much that usually means they're deeply engrossed in what is happening. That's a good thing. It means you love the show as much as we all do. I also loved your thoughts when the episode was over, thank you Dakara for your willingness to share your Buffy journey with each of us, It's always so gratifying to watch someone fall in love with this show and these characters, little by little, show by show.

I think that's one of the best reactions to this episode that I've ever seen. And, actually, you've been a very fair analyst of Riley on this show. I like Riley, and while I'm okay with most people who don't, some folks have an unreasoning hatred of this character that can't really be explained by the content of the show. Your perspective is very reasonable, actually noting that Riley is a good guy while not liking his relationship with Buffy. THIS episode is a heavy chunk of drama, as if we hadn't had any recently, but of a very different sort. As for your silent periods during this episode, sometimes that's very effective, as it was here. Great reaction.

Loved your thoughts on this dak. I agree with you on a lot of it. Riley is a good guy, it's just buffy never matched his passion for her and he needed that in the relationship because he always felt "lesser" or inadequate. Neither buffy or riley were completely right or completely wrong in their arguments, they both had good points and that's why it was a captivating scene. And yes, xanders moment of realisation that he loves anya and outwardly maybe treats her like a convenience, made him think he needed to change that, and prove how he truly feels, because that's not what comes across in the eyes of others and probably to anya herself. Another emotional episode

SMG is such a charismatic lead! It is so rare to have teen shows like Buffy nowadays with strong lead and support cast. There are many problems with the way writers handled Riley-Buffy thing but yeah, the scenes are still so good still.

Love this episode as well and your reaction. I just honestly enjoy your reactions so much because of how much you love this show. It's just so cool to see another person fall in love with a show that I love and have loved for awhile now. So these reactions make me so happy :). Hope you're doing well. (Also, I stayed until the end and saw my comment was picked. Yay!)

I think the Buffy/Riley story failed, in my opinion more due to the writing than anything else. I became a regular viewer during the summer between season 4 and season 5; so I caught the tail end reruns of season 4, then season 5 in real time; playing catch up with the earlier seasons. What I've only realized more recently, after many re-watches, is that Riley and Buffy aren't actually all that bad in season 4. Are they Angel and Buffy? No, but who needs them to be? And a common thought from reactors seems to be that in season 4, they don't actually mind Riley and Buffy; and at least one of them saying they didn't get the fan hate for Riley. And then by the time they get to this episode, they're like, yup, hate that man! I think this outcome became a bit of a fait accompli early in the season, and the writers were writing stories with this direction with Riley and Buffy in mind; which is going to take a lot of energy out of the way they present the relationship. On top of that, we get a lot Riley's asides in a way that almost over-emphasizes his disappointment when he tries to connect with Buffy and she closes off. It makes it seem like he's more entitled, when those types of reactions are purely for the benefit of the audience to know how he feels; only for it to be done somewhat heavy-handedly. It's not like he could have realistically sat her down to talk about not feeling needed *while her mom was sick* - that would have made him actually guilty of everything people say he's doing; whereas instead, he just keeps trying to be there for her, give her every chance for her to open up with him. I've only recently come to appreciate the parallels or foreshadowing though between Riley telling Buffy he's leaving in this episode, and the scene in Buffy's dream in Restless, where Riley effectively leaves her.

Stargazer1682

Season 4 did the best job of giving the characters proper motivation not to kill Spike; whereas now since season 4, the show continues to strain credulity as to why no one has staked him. And in this episode in particular, the plot armor for Spike is thick. Like, come on, Riley went out of his way to get a plastic woodgrain stake to impale Spike in the heart with? For what possible reason? Whose benefit was that for, besides the audience??

Stargazer1682

There's no reason to think that Spike, Angel, Darla or Dru are "special" in any way when it comes to emotion, just because they're vampires. We don't typically see the average vampire long enough to get to know them that well. The closest would be Harmony, who's now a vampire but still just Harmony, decidedly not sired by anyone special, but perfectly capable of all the same emotions she had as a human. Dalton, the research lackey for Spike and Dru in season 2, was, by all rights, just a run of the mill vampire, but he had enough residual humanity in him for the Judge to burn. Trick probably wasn't sired by the Master, but clearly had full range of emotions. The theory is just nonsense to make try and make Spike seem more like an outlier, when he's just not. And it's better that way, because if he's to have any of the character development fans want him to have, it's better be for him to be average and work his way out of mediocrity and earn his character, than be the blessed as the fucking vampire messiah or something.

I completely agree with you when it comes to Riley and Buffy. I think they're both right and neither can see it. Buffy is giving him everything she can right now but not her whole heart. The problem is shes never fully trusted him (as we saw in her dream). Part of the problem is because when they met she wasn't in a good place after Angel and another is that once things started getting deeper between them she found out he had been lying to her and that he was involved with all this dark, secret, military stuff. At the end of the day I think a lack of trust is really at the heart of all of their problems. And Riley has never trusted her either. He's always second guessed her, followed orders against her wishes and advice, questioned her past with Angel over and over, and etc. That, in my opinion, is why she couldn't ever fully love him. They do not trust each other and on some level Riley has always resented her (Her being stronger and not loving him like he loves her). I think another interesting thing of note is just how different their personalities and methods are. Buffy was trained to investigate, learn, and adapt. She's always looking to understand the situation and what the best solution is according to her moral code. While, on the other hand, Riley was trained almost in the reverse. Take orders, no questions, use the tools we give you, and leave your morals at the door to get the job done. A bit like oil and water if you ask me. These methods are how they each thrive. Without them, well, we saw how Riley's way of doing things didn't work for Buffy when she joined The Initiative and we saw how without that built in structure Riley started spiraling. I believe these basic differences definitely added to why things were always so dysfunctional between them.

Fun fact (I did skim the other comments to see if anyone else had mentioned already but apologies if its already been said). Sandy, the vampire Riley was seeing, was sired by vampire Willow in Season 3

Very good dramatic episode and a very good dramatic reaction. Sometimes silence is more engrossing than words. Willow to Riley in The Initiative: "You like buffy, she likes you. You spend time together, feelings grow deeper, and one day, without even realizing it, you find you're in love. Time stops, And it feels like the whole world's made for you two, and you two alone, until the day one of you leaves and rips the still-beating heart from the other, who's now a broken, hollow, mockery of the human condition." As predictions go, it was pretty close. 🙂

Yay, Riley has finally gone it's just a pity Xander didn't go with him . Now we can get back to the most glorificous Glory .

had some stuff goin on, so i'm late to the party and keep it short :P. For me there's two best things in this episode. One is Xander. This is really what Xander is. he sees what's going on when other people don't. This episode imo really shows his character's growth through the seasons. The second part is Buffy when talking with Xander. How she's able to flip a switch with her emotions when she realises she's going to lose Riley. Tbh, thats the first moment I saw chemistry towards Riley from Buffy since sometime in season 4. And Riley wasn't even there. I agree with you, and think its good that Buffy can sit with these feelings for a bit. Might help her in the long run. Yes thats me keepin it short, you know me :P.
