Hello All!

GIVE THESE GUYS ALL THE AWARDS!!! That scene between Buffy & Spike was truly INCREDIBLE. I felt everything they were expressing and I love them so damn much!!!! I was secretly pleased to see the gang struggling because I want them to realise how awful they reacted during that time. It could have been handled so much better. WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO END?!! *sobs*

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

I'm a Spuffy shipper so you bet I love everything about Spuffy in this episode lol Spike's speech remains just a beautiful declaration of love. He loves her selflessly; they're intimate without sex. What a contrast to S6. And I love the title of this episode - Touched. Such a simple thing but so pivotal for Buffy. Spike touched her and she's finally connecting to someone. She's no longer cutting herself off. I know you didn't care about the Only Love scene but oddly enough it's not so weird to have war and destruction bringing people together in physical way. Faced with imminent potential death people cling to each other. I've read a couple of fascinating books on the insane rise in weddings during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Iirc the statistics, you had couples marrying every 3-4 days despite the apocalypse around them. And not even all longterm couples. There were accounts of young women meeting someone one day and getting married the day after because you had no guarantee you'll live longer than that. We all want to alleviate our fears and having someone by your side to share them with is just a beautiful solution imo. Why not let ourselves have that intimate connection before potential suffering?

Christopher simeon

Now some things to point out. You pointed out that Faith started doing exactly what buffy was doing and that right there is part of the problem. It is the slayer way. That instinct is of doing things alone because they have to be the one shouldering all responsibility and power. Buffy herself basically says this to spike before his speech. She cuts herself off and it causes issues. That needs to be fix. The way buffy acted in 7x19 made the group turn on her. She wanted them to go in with no evidence and she would not listen to them. If she had listen to faith in 7x19 and chilled out then spike and andrew would have come with more evidence to back up her plan which is what the Scooby gang wanted before risking their lives. something more concrete. It is not like they don't want to fight it is they don't want to die for nothing. Buffy was right but that is not the issue here. The gang was definitely wrong for kicking her out and spike called them out on it but notice it was about the kicking out not about the issues they brought up with buffy. They should feel guilty over that but not over there issues with buffy's leadership. Something has to change.

Ed Green

Perhaps it would have been more mature for Dawn to have refused to accept the truth of Buffy's statement 'I can't stay here'. Maybe she should have said 'you should at least give it a try before you decide to go anywhere'. Also, this episode has the first ever lesbian sex scene on network TV.

Purple Nurple

I actually loved the 'make out' compilation - but I did watch this in my teenager years lol. The sex scene between Willow and Kennedy was a really big deal for the LGBT+ community as a lesbian sex scene like that was unheard of on TV, especially network TV. Faith and Wood - I saw their scene as just 'release some tension' rather than anything else. Xander and Anya was just them being them lol. But as DB says above - if they think they might go to battle tomorrow or soon, then it's quite a natural for thing for people to do. (SPN spoiler here) Dean Winchester tried the line on Jo in Season 5... lol I also didn't want Buffy/Spike to 'do the dirty' as well, as sex between them wasn't them being close. There weren't positive emotions involved when they slept together. This scene was very romantic and I think it shows how close they've become.

Mirko Paskota

Dakara, did you register where Faith and Wood were having sex? IN BUFFY'S BED!!! I was not happy...

SpikesEcho

You're 100% on point with Spike and Buffys relationship, in fact, what you've expressed about it and their dynamic really mirrors the Still Pretty podcast, who discuss it throughout the series. Definitely start listening to them!! Very much worth it

Joanna

I'm so happy I've managed to catch up before you actually finish Buffy !! I've been watching you since Supernatural and loved your reactions, your thought process and your discussions at the end. When I found out you were going to start watching Buffy I decided to wait until you were almost at the end before starting. I absolutely love Buffy don't get me wrong. It's a show that I can watch again and again but my God it was horrible to have to wait every week for a new episode when it aired. So I've caught up now (on Angel and Buffy... btw love your Angel reactions too) and I need to say: I'm still angry about 7x19 ! And it's been 20 years !!! Jokes aside, I understand your feelings about this show ending. I was a teenager when the show ended for me and it was heart-breaking. Loads of my friends made fun of me for liking it because it's a show about monsters but they couldn't have been more wrong. This is such a human show. All these characters are flawed. I have both loved and hated each character. They are HUMAN, messy, selfless and selfish at times and to see that in a show is precious. People aren't perfect but that doesn't mean that they can't do amazing things. I absolutely love reliving this show again through your eyes and no, you are not overselling anything. After 20 years we all still remember the Spike/Buffy scene. Love your reactions - keep up the amazing work !

DakaraJayne

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. You have an awesome name btw 😜 I truly feel this show is special, it’s really resonated with me and I feel like I need to process why I think that is. I hope to do so once I’ve completed the show. The spike buffy scene was just perfect, the dialogue, the acting, the entire vibe was spot on. Really moving. Hope to see you for my finale reaction 💜 thanks again

But that isn't just Buffy's fault, if you blame Buffy for how bad things got, then you should also blame her inner circle for reinforcing those idea’s that it's solely the responsibility of slayer. As soon as Giles said that the burden falls on her and that she needs to be general, it set her up for failure because no one person can do it alone. All it did was isolate her more. Nothing actually changed when Faith elected leader because of the same problem, they did the same thing they did to Buffy and put the burden to her. The scoobies can blame Buffy all they like but they also need to take a look at themselves, because they fed into the narrative that caused the issues.

Christopher simeon

The gang has always tried to help buffy in their own way. They know she is the slayer and they put her in charge because she is the one whose destiny it is. But even buffy realized this episode that just because she was chosen as slayer doesn't mean she has to stay isolated and alone holding all the responsibility. Giles last episode even said that buffy said she couldn't trust them and that should be addressed. You can lead but also trust others to help you.

Christopher simeon

Yeah that definitely would have worked out better than her leaving.

Christopher simeon

I don't know if you have been warned yet but do not watch the opening credits of Angel season 5. Don't even look at the ending moment when theme song ends with team usually walking towards the camera. Very important

slypeartree

You mentioned something in the air and you were right, stress is in the air. It's a lot of stress relieving sex.

Collinson

Don't want to say to much until you've finished the series but I would like to say re-reactions to some of the bigger episodes through all the seasons would be cool. Also "That's not Tara." Was pretty much the entire fandoms thoughts at the time.

Collinson

"They are HUMAN, messy, selfless and selfish at times and to see that in a show is precious. People aren't perfect but that doesn't mean that they can't do amazing things." So well said. I think this is the most amazing thing about this show and how it differs from a lot others. The characters feel real despite being in a universe with monsters and magic. It's the fact that none of them even the main character are perfect. They are all flawed like all humans yet still do their best to help the world and each other.

Bart Aansorgh

I'm still not a Spuffy shipper, but this is such a good scene, and Spike character growth was done amazingly. The change in him through season 7 is well done. I think you're descriptions him him at the end were spot on. The slayerettes and all, were frustrated with Buffy yes, and they acted out, but they did trade in one leader for another. Faith took Buffy's words in the end to hard imo and is trying her best. Seeing the first as the mayor definitely shook her, and everything else will give her a glimpse of what Buffy's been dealing with for ages. I think this episode continues of the previous one quite well, and closes most wounds that it left, though some will take longer. Spike scene when he returns feels like vindication :D. Them all doin it with eachother, is a common theme in shows when characters feels like the world might end. They grab at eachother trying to find comfort, or, as the first said it, to feel. The fact that spike and buffy lay there was a good counterbalance to it. Atleast thats how it seems to me. Also, the reason they were arguing right after Buffy was gone, obviously was because they've got no clue what they're doing. nobody steering them. I do think faith could be a good leader given the time, but they dont have that time. Lookin forward to the last ones. Sad that it will and, but excited.

Mark McMinn

So I’m an actor and I used that speech from Spike in an audition piece once and the people asked me where it was from as they loved it so much. I told them and they went ‘Oh the Vampire Show?’ Little do some know how much more this show is than a ‘Vampire Show’ the dialogue and the themes are phenomenal. Spike has some of the best speeches on the show. James Marsters really made the role his own. I never shipped Spuffy until the final season but for me I think what developed between the two was a profound friendship based on trust and love. Maybe not romantic love but certainly a love for eachother as people. From where they first met as enemies to then each others crutches and emotional punch bags to a genuine friendship makes them one of the greatest t.v pairings ever (doesn’t have to be romantically). I look forward to your final two reactions and your final views on Spuffy and of course the show as a whole 😊

PaulC

TBF though I think Buffy had some legit trust issues after Giles and Wood plotted behind her back to kill Spike.

annelisecalyn

I’ve always really appreciated Spike telling Buffy “you’re a hell of a woman” - NOT “you’re the Slayer.” She’s an amazing woman who just happens to be the Slayer, too. I’ve always imagined how much that must have meant to Buffy. She’s spent years having to prioritize being the Slayer over anything and has basically been forced to build her identity around that. It’s been exhausting and burdensome. So when Spike, in a nutshell, says “you’re amazing NOT because you’re the slayer - you’re amazing because you’re Buffy” OOF HELLO FEELINGS. She needed to be reminded that sure, she’s the Slayer, but she’s a person, too. And THAT person is what makes her the Slayer. On the need-for-sex flu that broke out in the house hahaha (I also cringe every time) I feel like much of that was to contrast the stuff between Buffy and Spike - they weren’t having sex (or even being romantic?) they were just holding each other and THAT was a million times more intimate (at least for me) than the others. It was kinda poetic actually.

annelisecalyn

PS: Dakara, I recently subscribed a few months ago and I honestly think you’re my favorite reactor! I’m super empathetic while simultaneously over-analytical, so favorite shows are ones with real, flawed, and complex characters. I tend to be disappointed by reactions to BtVS (as well as other shows) - they talk too much, rationalize/make fun of everything or simply don’t get it, which is fine! To each their own! But YOUR reactions have been a breath of fresh air. You’re honest, kind, and put yourself into the shoes of the characters. I interact with a lot of calloused, ignorant, and hardened people in my life fairly regularly so being able to watch things with you with genuine depth and empathy is beyond important to me. Sorry to go on a little rant lol this is the first I’ve posted on any of your videos but seriously you are wonderful and I hope you have an outlet and self-care for yourself just like your videos are mine (and others probably). Sending you so much love! Do something nice for yourself! You deserve it! Thank you for all you do ❤️❤️

StephanieB

That is so beautifully said, Joanna. I think you put into (rather poetic) words exactly why so many of us continue to love this show after so many years and still harbor the desire to come back to it again and again.

Eric Hunter

I was 42 when I first saw Touched in 2003, but the sexcapades made sense to me. Remember Faith, Hope, and Trick, "Isn't it crazy how slayin' just always makes you hungry and horny?" It's very much her reaction to stress. There is also the not unusual response to being in a situation where you might die tomorrow, so you want to feel alive tonight.

Bud Haven

Buffy and Spike have become great friends. Buffy's best friend. (Sorry Willow.) If they have a romantic relationship or not, it isn't going to change that. Unlike Buffy and Angel who were never friends. When their relationship ended there was nothing but for Angel to leave.

Brian Dworak

This for me is both an aww and an eww episode. The weird hookup theme was eww, particularly with Faith and Wood (heh), but then later after thinking about the scene between Buffy and Spike (aww), it was, to me anyway, showing the juxtaposition between physical desire and actual, real love. I mean, sure, historically Buffy is a fang banger, but the tenderness, care, and emotional support that Spike provided her is true love. You desire an act, but you love a person. It's funny to think back to the Angel years because I don't recall feeling quite the same amount of connection between them as she has with Spike. Hey, I'm always #TeamSpike anyway, as one of my best friends is called Spike. I'm very disappointed with how both Willow and Giles (and Faith) are acting as it just seems so out of character. I wish they would just kick all the spoiled brat potentials out (except for Felecia Day and Sarah Hagan) and return to the classic Scoobies. Only two left, Dak. I'm scared too. Thanks Dak, and I am feeling a bit better, thank you for the message.

DB

I've tried so many Buffyverse podcasts and can't find one to suit me. I need to give this one a listen. My main issue is that they're mostly rewatch podcasts and I'm more interested in thematic across the verse ones. That and either constant Bangel or Spuffy bashing (I love Spike and Spuffy but jfc sometimes there's no need to hate Angel so hard). I'm OK with Riley hate though lol

nick mangialino

Actually i think that might have been Joyce’s bed correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Buffy give Willow her bedroom and take her mother’s back?

nick mangialino

After 7 years how can she not trust the OG’s they risk their lives day in and day out and saved hers numerous times.

Corey

I've always been a Spuffy shipper and always will. I think this episode just shows how much Buffy has grown in relationships as well. Angel was a first love, but to me there's nothing really solid there. With Spike they have a true friendship and honesty. Angel always made the decisions in their relationship even if it was "for her own good", Riley gave her an ultimatum it's like how about we let Buffy decide what she wants. Spike saying "it's not about me" I just love that. Also Buffy is the Slayer, that is a huge part of her and Spike loves that about her. Riley couldn't handle it and I honestly don't think Angel could either.

DakaraJayne

Honestly comments like this make my day. You have no idea how much I appreciate your message. Buffy is such a unique and special show, it has many layers and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ride! Hearing that this journey has been enjoyed by others aswell is the icing on the cake. Thanks so much for watching and for supporting, appreciate you, Annelise 💜

PongPong31

Just like how, in the television world, and life in general, the little things are sometimes the most important, just dropping this comment to say that your accent tweaks to Kennedy's and Buffy's names made me laugh. Lol. Been on a binge to your reactions only just now. Grimm's next. You're the best!

PaulC

I have my issues with this last run of episodes, and with the final season in general, but there's some really great stuff in this one. I love the scene where Spike comes home and starts telling it like it is, and how the rest of the gang find it hard to justify themselves. I've been disappointed with Willow in these last fews eps, she's always had a close relationship with Buffy but I haven't really been feeling it for a while. And then there's those scenes with Buffy and Spike which are just so good. I'm team Spuffy all the way, I've always found that relationship far more interesting than Bangel, and Spike's whole character arc has been one of the most satisfying things about the show. Nice to see Buffy get her mojo back by the end, I don't think there's much to say about the rest of the ep, but damn this was good.

Eric Haefele

Subtitles?? Is there a link to a reaction without the subtitles?

DakaraJayne

I’m afraid not. Unless you play your own copy along side the reaction?

Christopher simeon

Buffy has opened up more to spike than anyone. It is what Riley wanted in season 5. It is what she and angel could never have because of the risk of Angelus. Buffy realizes how close off she is and is now becoming more open.

Eric Haefele

Thanks for the incredibly quick answer. I don't remember this. Have I just been unobservant ? Or was this new, or a technical glitch?

DakaraJayne

I always use subtitles if they’re available to me :)

Eric Haefele

Wow!! I am shocked at how unobservant I have been. I guess since I don't use them my brain has just decided not to notice them before now. Alley Box does it both ways with and without. I expect that can be more work than it is worth or perhaps takes excessive extra storage. She still has way less content then you do.

SpikesEcho

They recap the episode in the beginning real quick and then spend the rest of the podcast just discussing and analyzing. It's great! And they have Still Dead for Angel

TheMartinScott

Two decades have passed, yet the treatment of Buffy in episodes 19 and 20 remains unsettling to this day. Spike's response in the show vividly mirrors the audience's sentiments, bringing back a sense of reason that seemed absent in episode 19. His approach not only confronts the group's actions but also extends much-needed kindness and respect towards Buffy. Dakara, your analysis perfectly captures the discomfort many felt with episodes 19 and 20. Your reactions have been a pleasure to follow—your authenticity and thoughtful commentary truly stand out.

DakaraJayne

Thanks so much Martin, appreciate that. This show is amazing at making the audience feel connected and I’m definitely right there with Buffy as she’s being hurt by those she loves. Thanks for watching and I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying the reactions. Just 2 eps to go of this masterpiece of a show

Claire Eyles

Yet again season 7 continues to frustrate the hell out of me, because I can see what they were trying to do with episodes 19 and 20 and it feels like they completely dropped the ball aside from one or two scenes. Starting with episode 19 they should have included at least one scene where just the core Scoobies are shown discussing their concerns about Buffy's leadership, and then formulating a plan to deal with it. Maybe during that conversation there could be some sort of discussion about what they're going to do if Buffy isn't willing to listen to the group's concerns, and what outcomes they're willing to accept. The group should've been shown struggling with such a momentous decision to actually kick Buffy out of the house, but instead we got some random pile on and 'oh by the way, Buffy you're out on the street, good luck with that'. Episode 20 following straight on, and seeing how things quickly devolve into chaos just makes me think this is forced tension on the part of the writers, whereas for the sake of some better writing it could've been a pivotal moment of character growth for Buffy, Faith and the potentials.

Britburn

Great video. Yes, that Spuffy scene was great. I've seen it couple of times recently on YT and every time I do, it's through 'blurred vision'.

Kristen Keys

I don't have much to say about the episode that hasn't already been said. I just want to say that I am really hoping you feel better soon. What with the way stress affects our bodies, next to the demands of family and work life, all you have to do is add in a cold and you're sick for months. I was sick constantly when my daughter was young, and then poof! one day I just stopped getting sick. Anyway, sending healing thoughts your way. The other thing I want to say is, I love the way you say "Buff-eh" so much that I've taken to saying it that way myself. (Or at least I try lol.)

thomas dougherty

I understand your frustration with how ep. 19 handles the epsiode. I felt the same way watching it for the first time. Nobody wanted to go in that winery because they knew it was a trap. Buffy ignores all of it because she has a feeling they are hiding something inside. The result is that Buffy sends them into a known trap and a few potentials are killed, others badly injured, and Xander almost dies himself. After, the potentials who have a couple months of training and who are still kids scared and don't know what to do. Her "army" feels defeated and are losing hope. This is where I believe Buffy fails. She needed to find a way to bring them back together and give them some hope again. Take the night and think about what to do like faiths says. Instead, Buffy tells them that they need to back there so soon after. In this scene Buffy needed to find another way to explain to them why it was important to go back. Come up with a better plan and maybe find a way to find this object. She can't expect them to follow her into battle again on a gut feeling without some kind of good reason. In this way I think Buffy fails to be a leader. I do however think the potentials and especially the scoobies betrayed her by making her leave. They could have told her no and make her understand that we need more of a reason to back without doing what they did to her.

rattusprat

Dakara, just watched your intro (haven't got through the episode yet). Go off girl. Love the passion. Sometimes you’ve gotta get mad. You’ve got to say ‘I’m a human being, god-dammit! My life has value! I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not gonna take this anymore!' That's all. Whether I agree or not is irrelevant. Just appreciating you speaking your mind and displaying your passion for the show. Now to watch the episode.

William Lawrence

There was a poll done not that long ago, but people nowadays don't really care too much about seeing people hook up on shows. It would've felt differently back when it was airing, but times seem to have changed.

Apetass

Some of the writing in season 7 is absolute dogshit, as Joe Wilkinson would’ve put it. I can’t even rewatch episode 19. It commits the cardinal sin of writing when making the characters we know and love act in a way that’s so out of character that it's bewildering. Your frustration is perfectly justified. As for the hook-up scenes, I agree that they feel forced, and also unearned.

Apetass

…and don’t worry about the crying. Crying along with a reactor is one of the best parts!

Merkavar

Do the subtitles annoy you in some way? I prefer them, that way I can read what people are saying while the reactor is reacting over the top

Merkavar

What is the age gap between kennedy and willow? Like 4-5 years? Like Willow is 3rd year college student? And Kennedy is high school aged?

Merkavar

Just did a quick google, apparently a 3 year age gap, so 17/18 year old with a 21/22 year old? seems a little iffy? a large age gap for such a young age? But I guess thats par for the course in a show with 200 year old vampires dating 16/17 year olds

PaulC

AFAIK Kennedy's age is never established on screen, but according to Buffyverse Wiki the script for 7x10 said she was 19.

Eric Haefele

If subtitles were universally preferred there would be no videos without them. Subtitles are an individual preference, which is why there is a choice with YouTube videos. I find them distracting. but not overly so, or I would have noticed long before now. I am a slow reader.

Pauline Robertson

I was completely with you on everything in this episode, your saltiness about what happened with Buffy💅 Buffy: "I'm in charge so you do what I say and fall in line" Faith: "or how bout we don't" cut to later...Faith: I'm your boss, I make the rules and you follow" omg Faith you're the best👀 Not a fan of the sex scenes either, also not a prude lol but unnecessary imo. I get de-stressing or whatever, but they were all having sex in the same house, making noises and shit. Imagine Giles, Dawn and the potentials listening to that while trying to sleep or someone walking into the kitchen for a snack, oh hey Xander and Anya? dying😂 The Spike and Buffy scene is one of my fav in the whole show, it just shows how far they've come❤ I always thought that Buffy felt so much pressure from the scoobies that she couldn't always show that vulnerability, especially the older they got. A few people don't like Buffy this season because she comes across harsher but I for one love it! It was about time honestly. Anyway, love your reactions Dak, you don't hide or pretend you feel something, you talk from the heart and I appreciate that.❤

Jack

Good points from Shaun J - there's no reason the Scoobies have to be a dictatorship, and the culture isn't any one person's fault. Even the whole "she's the one with the power" is a bit shaky when you've got Willow, Spike, and Faith around, not to mention it's definitely not necessarily the most physically powerful person who should automatically lead a group. But when non-dictatorships fight wars they don't do so with a single person in charge, they distribute decision-making and areas of responsibility. The Scoobies could absolutely have adopted a less Buffy-centric culture before now rather than piling all the pressure onto her; it's a shame they didn't.

Koz

"Tab" is a brand of soft drink, which Buffy apparently is a fan of. ... You vacillate between different ways of pronouncing "Kennedy," but the way that's more natural for you makes her name sound like "Canada" and I really like it. No need for adjustments. :) ... When Spike tells Buffy that she is "a hell of a woman," he is echoing Riley in Season 6's "As You Were" virtually word for word. That statement from Riley is what prompted Buffy to break things off with Spike. Now, over a year later and having undergone so much change, Spike is finally capable of seeing Buffy the way Riley did, and it's now that Buffy wants him next to her.

x_Rhi_x

the SPEECH <3

Michele

Dang it! Why did Spike have to go an make me tear up? I thought I was beyond that by now with this show. Maybe it's because I really don't remember what's happening. I feel ashamed that I don't, because I was a really big fan back in the day. And I have seen the show a few times since. But it's been a while since my last re-watch, and it was through syndication and so I missed some episodes. Anyway. I had the waterworks going. And I agree with you about Spike . I can understand people being upset with Buffy, but not with how they responded. But, Buffy did not do the best job of realizing that her style was not working and she needed to be more open with them. But, what they did was still not right. Doing the "nasty" seems to be a common thing in shows when there's a big fight coming and characters think it might be their last night on earth.
