Austin's Question (answer in the comments):

Please tell me a story about a time you ate something you weren't supposed to. Funny stories only-- no nasty stories.

------------------

Let's check in about your goals for 2023, and let's read and answer some of your listener mail. We'll also touch on reaching 100k, where we're at with the channel, and try to find some unremarkable and odd places in Breath of the Wild.

Long time no see, as usual. We reached 100k since last time, and I'd really like to make a video to celebrate that on the main channel. I'm going to try to get that done, but priority #1 is getting another fun regular video up shortly. Thanks for your patience!

Please feel free to ask your questions in the comments below, whether they're about Youtube & video games, or just about life or anything else in general. I'm an opening book, and remember, members of The Bureau get any and all questions read and answered on the next episode.

Yours,

Any Austin

As a child, I put a used cigarette in my mouth cause it was just hanging out on the window sill and I was just a dumb child. It tasted bitter so I spat it out but I’ll never forget how gross it was.

I guess I was 11 or so, and I had an iguana. One day my dad got some iguana treats and the ol lizard didn’t like em. So Dad reads the ingredients and decides these are all normal enough ingredients… let’s see if the kid likes em. So I ate some iguana food that day. I did not like it.

No story, but I do have a question for the Bureau, for the Pokémon series specifically. With the continuous enumerating of the Kanto region, more and more situations of little kids having the same job as adults or teens are going to arise, and I mean they do give you money at the end as if they make an income. I don’t know. I just feel strongly that the Bureau should look at the Kanto region and make an exception for child labor laws when it comes exclusively to Pokémon battling. Of course, I know most of the time you are just the person who goes out into the field, so I don’t expect you to know the solution to this. But if you could let the guys upstairs know of this pending situation, that’d be great, let’s see what the head honcho’s have to say about this predicament.

Also, your work tangent about how you feel at your management level and your view on how people are based on their work ethic is so nice to hear. I work at a retail job myself, and I’m in a Lead position (so right below a manager), but I’m still in charge of some people and have a bunch of responsibilities, on top of working 40+ hours a week. The job itself sucks so much most of the time and it can be hard, but your rant gave me a new perspective to chew on! I hope I can adapt it to fit my own work-life balance.

When I was 3 I ate a rock. My dad figured I'd pass it no problem but my mom wanted to take me to the ER just to be certain. The ER told my parents that it would pass naturally. 24 hours later I pooped it out and the rest is history

Once when I was cooking a spicy Korean stew I was following a recipe video and misheard thick Seaweed (dashima) as MSG powder (dashida). I didn’t realize my mistake until AFTER I had put in “a fistful” of MSG powder (instead of a fistful of seaweed). It was nuclear stew man. That much MSG overstimulates your tongue and makes it sting. I’ll never forget it and it will forever be a fun language anecdote

I’m in the military and I agree that the work ethic thing is pretty good stuff. I didn’t notice until I became a sergeant but there are a lot of people who get to their first duty station after over a year of training and get really depressed and defeated and lose a lot of work ethic because military work is often doing the same thing over and over at a pretty high level of pressure because of international issues that are out of our hands. When you’re at your computer or wrench or whatever every day giving it your 110% and it’s never enough it’s quite tough but it’s even worse when some other parts of your team are only giving it their required bare minimum it only makes your bar higher. I lost my train of thought hahaha. Basically often in the military it can feel like you can and should only give your minimum but similarly that’s bad for your mental health and for your friends.

Like A WEEK ago, I realize I have buttermilk in my fridge that I never used. I never even opened it or broke the seal. Sure it's a little past its expiration date, but it looks OK, smells OK, pours out of the bottle OK. I make buttermilk biscuits with them. They're flaky, buttery and maybe a little TOO tangy -- otherwise very good biscuits and I don't get the runs. I don't even regret using buttermilk that expired in December.

Haven't finished the video but I am at the point where I'm going to mentally refer to you as OverlordAustin. Or IronchefAustin.

Austin’s question: When I was like, 2(?) I had found a bunch of dead wasps in the corner of the sunroom at my grandmas house by the lake. I don’t really know what happened next but I did end up not learning my lesson because a second time, baby me found wasps in the corner and found them fit for consumption.

When I was young, I once accidentally placed a toaster with pop tarts in it under one of those plug in room perfume odourisers and it melted onto the pop tarts. I didn't realise and ate it and started to choke and probably could have died. That would have been a pretty embarrassing way to go. My mom would have become one of those women who campaign to ger rid of whatever thing killed their idiot kid. I would have been the "airwick kid" for sure.

As a kid, I hated Reeses cups because they were tough and fibrous and got stuck in my teeth. Turns out I didn't know you were supposed to remove the paper cup they were in. Not sure what my thought process was on that one.

My take on this important question is that I think children with renumerative jobs should be counted as employed, but children without jobs should be assumed to be out of the labor market - so, they can be added to the numerator, but not the denominator. Of course, this has the perverse incentive of hiring more children to juice your employment rate. PokePolicy will just have to figure it out

memetech honkdog

when i was a kid, i used to eat the entire sunflower seed... if you chew on the shell for a while, it becomes less sharp & more like uhhhhhh wood pulp? (sorry if this is overly gross) anyways it never killed me so maybe thats the secret right way to do it who knows

Cameron Smith

Hahaha, PokéPolicy, that’s a good one! I completely agree, a separate investigation might have to be had in the job market of the Kanto (and other subsequent regions) to determine if the specific child labor laws are being abused. Granted, our enumerator is just the field guy, there’s no way he can handle a task like this. We need a new hero.

When creating your music, what is a favorite VST or plugin that you find yourself using a lot?

There was one time when my older sister was about 10 and I was about 5 that she said she'd give me this cool glow-in-the-dark woven plastic lanyard keychain thing she'd made (IDK if they even have a name, so hopefully you know what I'm talking about) if I ate a single Hot Cheeto. Now, the reason this was even significant is because I have the babiest of tongues out there when it comes to spice and because I have some kind of psychosomatic block when it comes to trying foods I'm already convinced I won't like. Anyways, I tried to eat it and gagged and ended up spitting/throwing it up on the floor, and my mom made her clean it and made her give me the keychain thing anyway. Good times. I also used to eat paper for clout in elementary and middle school and accidentally swallowed a quarter once. I also found out last year working a field job that when you eat enough cashews or peanuts in a day, your digestive system... is not able to absorb all of the oil. Anyway, here's a question for you: what frequent purchase do you *always* buy a specific brand of every time instead of an off-brand, as long as you have the choice? So glad to see you and the channel getting more of the love you've deserved this whole time! Keep it up, but more importantly, keep being yourself.

Hey Austin, love these patreon check ins and major congratulations on reaching 100K. You’re without a doubt my favorite artist and creator on youtube. :) I was wondering- You’ve probably answered this before, but whats with the hair clips? I think they look rad, just wondering how you started doing that and if it’s kinda a bob ross situation lol. All the best! as far as stories go, I thought of one where I ate some dirt to prevent a panic attack as a distraction. I was on my way to class and I had to take a test so I couldn’t afford to miss it so I just threw some dirt in my mouth. not sure if that would qualify as eating because I didn’t swallow it, the taste was so gritty and bad that I stopped having anxious thoughts. So I guess that was a success? Wouldn’t really recommend it. lol

Crayons. They smell like they should taste good but then it doesn't taste that good. tried this at 12 where this behaviour is no longer cute but more questionable

Only sort of "eating" but when I was little I saw people using breath-spray on tv so I took some perfume that was sitting out and sprayed my mouth. It was absolutely awful.

Keep Pluggin

when i was a child i ate a chocolate that had maggots in it and my mom freaked out. i dont remember this first hand but its one of those stories you get told happened all the time.

My high school drama club's prop room had a ladder to the school's roof. When I was a freshman, an older kid climbed the ladder and left a cookie on one of the light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. I found it again three years later and ate it unprompted, like a quirky theater kid. My friends were not as impressed as I wanted them to be. P.S. Thanks for checking in! Sending good vibes and congrats on 100K <3

I was recently promoted to a manager position and have been going through this same existential crisis. It was very therapeutic to hear your thoughts on this and to know I'm not alone. Anyway, I once ate a dog biscuit because there was a bowl of them just sitting on my friend's kitchen counter. Tasted bland more than anything else - I suppose if they had been made for humans they would contain a pinch of salt.

When you're creating your music, how would you describe the ratio of influence between what you want and what you think other people will like/expect from you? Relatedly, do you listen to your own music, outside of the sort of self-critiquing you talk about in this video? I'm glad you mentioned the impact of koroks in BotW. Devs obviously want to reward players who explore beyond paths of necessity, but for me (and you, by the sounds), the intrinsic reward in older games was feeling like I found something I wasn't supposed to, something overlooked or forgotten by the world's creators, and the vibes/atmosphere that always come with that. Extrinsic rewards have their place, but in a map this big, it's a bummer that it's so saturated with them.

Blast from the Past suggestion: https://youtu.be/ZWd8UxViLzs Flashback to Austin promoting whatever games he liked at the time at the start of each episode of Eggbusters: Red Blue. People advertising the things they like without the expectation of compensation tickles my humanity.
