Welcome to November! The main article for this month will be on Arcane Science and Industry. But for now, it's time for questions. As always:

With IFAQs I need questions I can answer in one to two paragraphs. So you need a clear, concise topic with a specific answer, not something abstract or broad.

I'm more likely to answer questions that will interest a wide audience or that could come up in many campaigns, as opposed to  super-specific questions whose answers most people will never use.

I will NOT have time to answer all questions, but feel free to repost a question next moth if it doesn't make it this month!

An important thing I need to call out is a change to how I respond to follow-up questions. The goal of IFAQS is that they are short articles, which allows me to write more of them; I have a finite amount of time. However, if an IFAQ generates 35 distinct follow-up questions (and the last one did) and I address them all, it's not a short article any more. With a Dragonmark I want to cover a topic in as much depth as possible, but again, the point of an IFAQ is to address a topic in one or two paragraphs, and that means I can't answer twelve additional questions on that topic. I don't mind people ASKING those questions, and I enjoy it when those questions lead to discussions between readers. I just want people to understand that with IFAQs specifically, I will not be able to address every follow up question.

Because I don't want to spam Threshold followers with ANOTHER email, I just wanted to throw in the results of the Smith's poll. They're a triple beast: A beasthide shifter Path of the Beast barbarian whose faith is tied to the Beast Within. They're a folk hero who strives to stand up for the Cyran refugees in Threshold. And on consideration, they both have a prosthetic leg fashioned by the Tinker, AND can't remember anything about 992 YK... which might be related to the unusual gifts they possess through the Path of the Beast. I'm attaching a sketch of the Smith from Julio Azevedo!

Thanks again for your support!

Will the arcane science and industry address the history of magic development?

Adrian Burton

How common were (pre mainstream airship) technological powered flight? Were blimps, dirigibles, balloons used in the Great War or for exploration by the Wayfinders Guild or similar groups?

RGMD

Who are some of the overlords in Sarlona?

Joshua Jung

What sort of flying magical items do you see across Khorvaire? Brooms exist as D&D canon, but it seems like different countries would have different sorts of flying apparatuses.

Jarrod Taylor

The Eberron Campaign Setting lists animal companions by regions, which is very helpful in fleshing out some of the more commonly encountered beasts by area... but are there any particular Pets that are known to certain parts of Eberron?

FalseAesop

Don't suppose we can have a bit of a talk about the crown things kalashtar wear. Is it just kalashtar and Inspired? Do Adarans ever adopt the style. How'd that whole thing come about? How common is it among the kalashtar?

Elly Runnalls

I'm curious about daily arcane industry, like businesses or individuals who are part of the Tinkers Guild. Aside from paying guild fees, what does being licensed mean for their business? Is there any place in major cities for arcane tradespeople who *aren't* licensed by Cannith?

Sunev

Is there any sort of standardized process for research and development of new arcane-based spells in the Five Nations, or do most wizards assume they'll just be learning spells for most of their careers?

Joseph Meehan

1. How would you use the Dreamspace? 2. What's the relationship between Kythri and Elementals?

Antonio Ruiz

In the few article you mention Dral Khatuur its been said she has no followers among the Lords of Dust. Would you think it plausible instead of Rakshasa she would have Ice Devils serving her, working in Frostfell toward her release?

Eric Smith

On arcane industry, I am actually curious about the details of a Lamplighter's life and whether some of them are actually acting as lantern bearers in places using Light or renting such services out?

Jamie Bernstein

Are all Eberron Sphinxes connected to the study of the Draconic Prophecy? If so, how do the Dragons see them?

Spike Hemphill

I like the idea of treaty of thronehold doesn't make having undead illegal but you to prove didn't get the body from graving robbing. Does treaty have clause about summoning fiends especially in cities. Summon lesser demon is 3rd level spell and mages can have imp and quasit as familiars. How trouble would party be if they open use fiends. Isone way trip to jail, or maybe just a fine? Do youneed license to have one? Are does all depends on how much damage it causes? (This happen in my game which my party use the get pass the Dark Lanterns barriade , it was only two imp that died quicky but I how much trouble they are in)

Matt Brady

A curiosity from the Nobles Dragonmark: "However, I could potentially see a Wynarn queen appointing one or more of her siblings as royal surrogates; much as a king can have multiple officially recognized consorts to help produce heirs, that the queen could appoint another sibling (thus, as close to her in blood as possible) as eligible to produce heirs." Does that mean there’s reason to believe Mishann may have intended to appoint Wroann as such a surrogate? Or that politically she could have attempted an alliance by making Wroann’s children her heirs after the fact (to fill the five prince positions)? Or Wroann, as youngest and last to die, might have extended alliance opportunities like that to the female heirs of Thrane/Karrnath to strengthen their triple alliance at the start?

Matt Brady

And a few questions on the Blood of Vol. You mentioned in your article on The Crimson Covenant that the elves who brought the necromancy traditions interacted with humans AND dwarves "After the line of Vol was eradicated in Aerenal, the Undying Court allowed elves allied to the line but who didn’t carry its blood to either swear fealty to the Court or to accept exile. Some of these went directly north to Farlnen and became the Bloodsails. Others landed in Lhazaar and migrated west, mingling with humans and dwarves. The Blood of Vol arose from that mingling of traditions, and the Divinity Within was a discovery of this new faith." I hadn’t considered the dwarves being strong followers of the Blood of Vol as well but am certainly digging the idea now. Do the dwarves constitute a notable part of the Seeker faithful? Is the Blood of Vol present in the Mror Holds (as it is in Lhazaar and Karrnath, the bordering nations)? Is the Blood of Vol a uniquely “humanoid” faith that has difficulty translating to the other group persecuted by the Vassals and Purifiers, the monsters of the Cazhaak cults? Distance aside it seems that a shared distrust of the “good and faithful” Sovereigns would lay fertile ground for cross-pollination I must say I’ve always liked the Seeker emphasis on agricultural community (working together, materialist philosophy about trusting in yourself and your community). Is this strong social bond alongside agricultural skill part of why the faith succeeds in Mabaran zones? Pushing back against the natural decay and entropy? If so is this part of the faith (working with things the Sovereigns shun) or a happy byproduct of their core values?

So I have some question about King Kaius and Queen Etrigani. If I remember correctly Etrigani is a Deathguard, so what is her reasoning for marrying Kaius. Also in theory wouldn’t there be a problem with any child produce by the couple because it would be consider but not actually a half elf.

Jeremy Tollefson

I know House Vadalis and magebred plants was a potential main topic, but maybe there can be a short answer to a general question? The Mark of Handling focuses on animals, so how much can the mark be used to modify plants, magical beasts, ot even humanoids? How much experimentation has Vadalis done in these arenas (for both/either nefarious or commercial purposes)?

Dominic

What age do students start at arcanix? How is non-magical education approached in the 5 nations?

Thomas Brøgger

Are any problems with performance enhancing drugs in sport like Hrazhak, skyblades or race of the eight winds?

Sean Kane

In Eberron's history have there ever been any conflicts or major events/myths between the land-dwelling people and the aquatic civilizations that has significantly shaped their relationships today?

Sierra

In honor of our new couple: what sort of marriage ceremonies exist across Khorvaire?

Teettan

I know they are tied to culture and religion, but religions can spread, would the Quori want to build any monoliths in Khorvaire or is there something special about Sarlona that keeps them in Riedra.

Alex Perez

Do the dragonmarked institutions refer to their marks as "dragonmarks"? Were dragonmarks found in geographic locales (before on people) called dragonmarks and this was simply an extension of that? Are there other names for them? I'm guessing it's because of it's relation to the Draconic Prophecy but do most people know that? How does the average person in Khorvaire understand the "dragon" part of "dragonmark"?

Gonzalo

I just saw a post asking about Conqueror. I used Stratego to simulate a challenge involving the classic Karrnathi game, but I was wondering if you hade something else in mind.

Zed Bundershot

We know what Karrnath does with their veterans; how much value and care for do you see the other nations assigning to all their discharged troops? Does Deneith have a veteran's administration?

Kurt Klassen

To what extent are equipment and uniforms standardized in the armies of the Five Nations? To what extent are civilian goods standardized?

Wandering Mage

Are there Overlords that aren't involved with the Lords of Dust that have rakshasa servants?

Cliomancer

They're girlfriends! <3

Cliomancer

Is it plausible for some of the less familiar and often weirder species of D&D (Tabaxi, Loxodons, Centaurs) to get into Khorvairan nobility through marriage or noteworthy service or is it just not done?

Earth Seraph Edna

Why have dragons expanded into Sarlona only in the form of the Storm Guardians? Are dragons afraid of Sarlona's absence from the Draconic Prophecy? Do the Storm Guardians care about Tiamat at all, or are they solely focused on Ran Iishiv? What mortal fear does Ran Iishiv even represent (destruction?), and why are the Storm Guardians squarely concerned about that? Are there dragonborn created by the Storm Guardians? Why did dragons opt to completely torch down the giant nations and use the both the Traveler's Curse and the Du'rashka Tul to hex all of Xen'drik, rather than conquer Xen'drik conventionally? The dragons clearly put plenty of effort into the Du'rashka Tul, if we look at its testing ground in Argonnessen, the Caged City of Vreen in Dragon Magazine #360. How exactly do bolatashi work? Could, for example, a bolatashi be captured and exploited by House Vadalis? Are there any native, Khorvairian cults of the quori who genuinely, 100% believe that the Dreaming Dark has the right idea for Khorvaire, even without being significantly mentally influenced into believing such?

Serpen Thrope

What role would you give the Shadow Elves from Mystara to distinguish them from Drow in Eberron?

Earth Seraph Edna

What is Baron Merrix d'Cannith's actual background? For such a high-profile NPC, there is surprisingly little information on him, and what little there is (e.g. in the Dragonmarked book) tends to be contradicted in other sources. Just who is this guy, and what where was he at the time of the Mourning?

Lily

In an article in July, you mentioned an old Sarlonan style of magic called "Externalist." Are there any user Externalists still in existence? How would you represent them mechanically?

Azark

How related do you envision the different languages of Eberron to be? Are there distinct dialects of Common spoken throughout Khorvaire? Are certain languages like Orcish and Goblin related to each other?

Heroic Pierogi

How are Khoravar treated in full elven societies? Do they learn how to wield a Double Bladed Scimitar in Valenar tribes? Do they get to be chosen by Ancestral Spirits? Can a Valenar in Aerenal have any hope of becoming any kind of Deathless? How do the Drow tribes in Xen'drik treat the Valenar?

Thomas Brøgger

How is the water supply in Sharn working?

Reighndragon

In Sharn you have the local transportation with skycoaches. Are there any other cities with a special form of local transportation? Something like small trains (tram or subway), or a taxi-system etcetera. The gondola system of Venice? A system that sets a city apart from the other cities. If yes, would these systems be independant or run by House Orien?

Ginge

Besides King Boranel ir'Wynarn, mentioned in 'Five Nations' as desiring peace more than the crown of Galifar, who are other major movers/powers/interests in keeping the peace between nations from a desire for peace, not simply out of fear of a second Day of Mourning?

Thursday Garreau

Did shifters originally come from the Tashana Tundra?

Earth Seraph Edna

Who are some major figures among the Undying Court itself? There is a notable dearth of important Undying Court NPCs.

Carolyn Kusmin

What did the line of Vol think about the Aereni assertion that Mabaran undead would eventually bring the ruin of the world through their consumption of its life energy? You've called out the Aereni as being more concerned with necromancy than most societies because of their lengthy elven lifespans, but the line of Vol was elven, too - why didn't it concern them, or how did they justify their practices if it did?

Asmuz

Hey, Keith! I will repost some of last month and add new ones (a little late this month). 1. What's Kaius I Been Doing For Almost a Century? (this is a funny version of a old forum topic that I found yours haha, but about Vol) 2. Jorasco and Karnathi Culture (It is easy understand how Deneith was influece by Karrnath culture, but can you talk about how House Jorasco was and is? This is my perception that a House having a main enclave in some place will make it more cultural attached and influenced by it) 3. Can you talk about “wide elemental” or ways about how elementals are use in day life on Lorghalen? 4. Can you talk more about Tolanen ? It is easy understand the exacly plot of New Zalanberg, but this one I am not sure. 5. Do you have some thought about the Prince of Lorghalen? 6. What you think about vigilant or superheroes as group patron? (I don't know if maybe this one would be too long for just IFAQ) 7. I think someone in an old IFAQ ask about a monk order of Zilargo. I forgot the name, but I just remember and support that ask, 8. Why "Sarlona is not part of the prophecy" matter and how can be use by a DM?

Ivan Flis

I started running a campaign in which the PCs are mages who just recently joined the Twelve, so I have a ton of questions about the functioning of the institution. I'll ask just a few that first come to mind. 1. This is my understanding of the Twelve from the published books: It's the primer institution for magical research later turned into industrial applications by the Dragonmarked Houses. In the history of the relationship between the Galifar Kingdom and the Houses, it also acted as a unified front for the negotiations with the king. It seems to me that during the war, this diplomatic role of the Twelve was somewhat diminished and many Houses started acting much more independently (e.g. Lyrandar getting Stormhome and silently taking over Valenar, Tharashk getting into the mercenary business, Phiarlan and Thuranni getting into an open conflict, etc.)? Is this view correct or is this just my Eberron? 2. What's the internal structure of the Twelve? How many people on faculty? Do they operate trade schools for magewrights? 3. What's the relationship between the Twelve residents and Korth locals? 4. Did the Twelve, like the rest of the continent, go on war footing during the war? What did that entail? 5. What are the most exciting cutting edge magical technologies being developed at the Twelve? 6. Are most spellcasters at the Twelve of the PC classes, or are they magewrights?

David Stanley

Can you tell use more about Sora Kell?

Beoric

I'm not clear on whether duur'kala and dashoor are part of Gaal'dar culture, or only exist in Dhakaani culture. If they do exist in both, are there differences between them in role, tradition or overall level of skill?

Farouche

I'm super late to the party but I was wondering if there were theories either in-world (hearsay, tales...) or your own thoughts, connecting the Traveler and changelings with Kythri?

Earth Seraph Edna

The 5e Wayfarer's Guide to Eberron and 5e Eberron: Rising from the Last War present a significantly more compassionate, heroic, and proactive version of the Path of Light, compared to its mostly-passive incarnation in the 3.5 sourcebooks. With that in mind, how are the Overlook district in Sharn and the entire nation of Adar different, under this more proactive reimagination of the Path of Light? Overlook is simple enough; if the Path of Light's mainstream "lightkeeper" sect is about spreading hope and goodwill, then the kalashtar and other Adarans of Overlook could simply help out in Sharn in many ways. But what of Adar? It is hard to simply spread hope and goodwill when the nation is under eternal siege, and the militant "shadow watcher" sect is said to be decried by condemned by "the elders of Adar," which is ironic when Adar is the one nation under military siege at the hands of quori minions.

Sierra

With respect to the rebel quori bound to the Kalashtar, how much have they changed compared to rest of the quori? I know they have been called out in the past as good and neutral in alignment, suggesting a level of empathy the other quori lack, but I wonder how much of that inherent nightmare remains!

Kleya

What might some cults of Masvirk/Rhashaak be doing in Ha'katorvahk and the surrounding Q'Barran jungles that might be aiding Masvirik's rise, if that is the macro-endgame of this particular campaign? I'm thinking specifically like, rituals or tactics they might be using (in addition to what's mentioned in Dungeon 182/185 with attacking mining camps and stealing Khyber shards), and what Masvirik's influence might look like regionally if his bonds were being weakened. Do you have any thoughts regarding Prophecy threads or anchors that might relate to Masvirik's rise/the prevention thereof?

Ivan Flis

Is Eberron round or flat or something third? It seems to be implied in the books that it's round (Eberron wrapping herself around Khyber, there being a pole) but nothing definite. Do the different civilizations (Galifaran, Riedran, Giant, Dragon, Undying Court) have different cosmological visions in that regard?
