Hi guys! Before the new episode released, I said I’d need feedback from the community. I certainly got it. 😔

This episode received by far the most negative criticism of any episode of Female Agent. So that’s obviously an indicator that I made mistakes this time.

The criticisms were mainly (but not entirely) in two areas:

It took too long to produce

The characterisation of the heroine didn’t feel consistent with some of her earlier scenes

I want to avoid spoiling the episode for those who haven’t played it yet, so I’ll get into some detail after the general release on Sunday. But I’ve spent part of this week just listening to and absorbing the feedback (as well as doing prep work for the next episode).

This week: I’ll be focusing on some scene edits, based on player feedback, aimed at improving the characterisation issues.

I want to say thank you to all the people who provided feedback, here, on Discord and in DMs.  I read it all and took it seriously, and I'm sorry to those of you who didn't feel this episode was a hit.

Don't feel down about negative criticism, it's all fixable and its still a great game. My suggestion would be to look for feedback earlier - possibly from a small focus group.

There is no reason to feel down about negative criticism, just take note since they are valid criticisms… I mean she goes on doing sexual stuff with other complete strangers and a drug dealer and yet for the character that seems to be the most “normal” she is abhorred about the idea? At that point in the mission after all she has done, that is the point in time she is against the whole stuff?? It’s not like she is forced to “do” the real bad guy she is after…. The tone for the current addition changes too abruptly.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, Crush. You’re still the best storyteller out of all game creators. My best advice for you is for you to keep coming up with your great ideas, but also listen to other people’s ideas as well. If you work collaboratively with some of your patrons, this could be the hottest game of all time. I know I’ve got a lot of great ideas I’d like to share. I’d create my own game if I knew anything about game development. Unfortunately, I don’t. That’s why I leave it to the pros. Maybe start coming up with polls. Have your patrons vote on what kind of content they’d like to see in future updates, unless that would seriously interfere with your creative liberties. Either way, it’s your game. You do what you think would work best.

I enjoyed the latest update, Crush. I get that the sudden change in Kate's responses between previous actions and the bj in the update is jarring. After the regular sexual activities she has engaged in for her cover (with or without her personal enjoyment) and knowing so much had already been witnessed by the bosses the personal crisis she goes through felt more appropriate for an earlier stage in the story. Either that or if Kate had somehow managed to avoid almost all sexual encounters up until this scene or even have just as strong a reaction to each mainstage of her changing standards would have been much less of a jolt. Maybe an agent without the exhibitionist and/or submissive traits that managed to avoid compromises up until now would make more sense with the reaction. Like I said I enjoyed the scene. The conflict Kate felt, the self-loathing and doubt was on point for a less experienced version of Kate. Steph's new rise to emotional support for her and the resulting closeness, alluding back to the looks shared between bargirls performing lez show with their friends was great. The very real affection and attraction developing between MC and a couple of her co-workers is really well done. Please don't be disheartened. It seems to me that you agonised over this release and wanted to get the theme of the story's corruption and compromise back to the fore following several scenes of badass spy Kate. A tough task indeed but one that would work with a little retcon. such as MC throwing up after having (mostly noncon) sex with Connor to get the job. I look forward to future releases without any less enthusiasm.

I had to think on it, but I really loved the update. I can understand some peoples disappointment in it, but its been the first release that has had a fairly wide spread negative attitude to it, but not enough for me to unsubcribe to your page, all the rest have been amazing. I know this update wasnt as much in regards to story or sexual content as people would have hoped, but thats water under the bridge, it has set up some possible additional dialogue in past scenes. So the conflict you introduced in this update, can be applied at early instances, like where she has to get naked and optionally have sex with conner, then the following scenes, like undressing in the office in front of people at the start of the bar storyline and the times she has to get undressed in the changing rooms, knowing its covered by CCTV (this could eventually become her norm, so she feels less embarrsement or anxiety about undressing in the changing rooms watched by CCTV). I like the way its going, I am hoping for some updates to improve the sex scenes in the past, to bring in illustrations like you did in the previous update.. I dont mind if you pause future updates to bring the previously released updates up to date with the new art style or are able to do them alongside future updates. Your work as always is amazing and I look forward to each update no matter how big or small they are, as I know the next one will be better than the previous one.

To me Kate’s reaction made perfect sense. Even if your Kate was a bit slutty or had lots of sexual experiences, this was something different. She was told too and unambiguously prostituted herself. I feel like even for the most sexually liberated of Kate’s this would be something that would send you reeling. Everything else you were never paid for in cash, never was told to do so, any actions could be rationalized, could be justified that you chose to do so. But not this, this was you selling yourself for cash and I feel like that would be enough of a shock to get to just about anyone. While I don’t want you to not take in other people’s feedback I also don’t want you taking criticism too personally. I can tell you really care about this project and don’t want this affecting you in a negative way.

I get what the aim was in this update but yes I agree, it didn't build off decisions that were made leading up to that. It was all very negative and perhaps some options could have been in being a bit more resilient towards it but still having apprehensions and concerns considering this was the door to bargirl.

Look I really look forward to these updates – in fact this is my favourite game – but I must say I agree with some of the sentiments. The MC is already prepared to sleep with Conner for her cover and give BJ for drugs and tells her superiors she is ok with it – so it did feel like a regressive step in last episode and unneccesary – going over old ground again. In fact this doubt could have been covered in the car BJ scene perhaps. I am not a writer nor wish to tell you what to do, however, I do feel as we have already been allowed to let her compartmentalise her actions - that if you want to add the doubt in then that could simply be an option during the scene itself, or a sleepless night afterwards questioning if she is doing the right thing. Options that can be selected for those who enjoy the characters turmoil but skipped for those who don't. It does feel there is an opportunity to move forward more quickly as she has already (at least on surface) come to terms with her mission and what she must do. I hope that feels like constructive comments!

I like the idea of Kate having the odd regressive moment, as oscillating between slut and non-slut paths would be a natural thing for someone in Kate's position to go through. Such moments take more selling to feel authentic, and I think that's all that's missing here. Retconning a few more seeds of doubt, and maybe some more setup to establish that Kate is currently in a mindset that is counterproductive to her new profession, so she doesn't have access to the compartmentalization tools she usually relies on. There's also something to be said for tying a corruption stat to related decisions she's made so far, so that Kates with sufficiently high corruption don't go through as much turmoil by this point. While they would admittedly get a much less emotionally charged version of the scene, it would feel more natural to those whose Kates have until that point been as aggressively slutty as possible, while ensuring the more hesitant Kates get the internal struggles consistent with their character.

Steve C

I totally agree with this. I was actually just thinking about the possibility of Crush implementing a corruption system. I don’t have any clue how simple it would be to go back and add it to the beginning of the game, but if it’s doable, it could fix Kate’s negative reaction in this update. I can’t really imagine there being any, but for those players who haven’t taken the sluttiest of routes, their Kate’s corruption level would be lower, causing certain actions to have negative effects. However, if Kate’s corruption is high, there would be story options allowing little to no effect for her actions. I hope a corruption system can eventually be added to the game.

The problem is she's been unambiguously prostituting herself form nearly the start. Willingly, even enthusiastically. All the way from back in Dubai for the current version. It's just that it was done with duplicity and for information and access, not money. But those are hardly relevant details. Sex is being commodified regardless. Not to mention, if you recall previous versions where you can build up her back story, creating a Kate that would almost certainly have no problems with sex work (even if she would with the specifics regarding the super shady Hardcock Cafe) is very possible. I'm sure the scene in question would actually be really good for a certain version of Kate, but as it is with all of the above in mind, being railroaded into it is jarring and disappointing.

B

You know i'm worried that's going to be the solution and it would be a shame. If the game moves in a direction of the agent being stressed out and feeling forced all the time while removing the slutty copacetic options that have been present from the start, that would more or less ruin the appeal of the project.

I think you're pretty much on the money. To abstract things a bit, I would say that the feedback is substantially caused because players have guided their Kates in different ways, and therefore have different expectations of her behavior and thought processes. The more time invested into their playthroughs, the more disappointed players will be if they are told their Kate acts or thinks counter to how they've guided her. The beginning of this episode tended towards one extreme a bit, hence the backlash by players that consistently went in the other direction, I believe. I agree that inconsistency/oscillation is cool to include and, properly done, adds a real human touch. I think we also concur that it looks like we need some array of variations that are specifically written towards, especially whenever Kate's mental state or internal dialogue needs to be referenced. It would have to be somewhat limited in order to be feasible, of course. Maybe distill player choices into some combination of agent archetypes + corruption? Whatever is used, I think all player choices should be evaluated against that matrix, aggregated, and whatever is the closest match be used as appropriate when a scene variation is called. I know that this is still introductory material and the game is supposed open up more once Kate becomes a bargirl, so maybe it's best just to keep on pressing forward to that point? Anyways, I think things are still greta, overall. Guess these are the problems you have when people really, really care about your game :D

The updated story was slightly shorter, thinking there would be many scenes, but the result was just oral sex, so I was very disappointed. Then the author wants to step by step train the protagonist to become a slut. It is recommended to start with a fully nude service in the bar. If the boss confiscates the protagonist's underwear, the protagonist can choose to terminate the task or accept the service. My English is very poor, I hope everyone can read it clearly.

B

Also, you know, i get how the general reaction here could make one feel not the greatest. But on the other hand as someone who also loves writing, if any of my work ever generated this much discussion -- even if the general tenor was disappointment with a creative choice plus constructive feedback -- i would be at least as thrilled as anything else. It couldn't happen over something no one cares about.

Johnny Rocketfingers

I think a lot of the writing you've done for this scene fits best in earlier segments of the story. It is a good reflective work, it is just misplaced in where it is given the timeline so far.

Xandalphon

Sorry that we are a bunch of pervs. It's quite sad, but 60%-70% of us made kate to choose the kinkiest and naughtier possible dialogue option, to see the next step in her road to depravation and, maybe, gain a sex scene (all the way through, not only oral, if possible). I'm not saying that we don't (or didn't) enjoy slow building up of sexual tension, or, in general, the story development, but as someone also said, regressive moments in these kind of games could be a bit unnerving, to say the least. There's also the 'frog tale': if you put a frog in a pot of boiling water she will jump out immediatly; if the water is cool and you slowly raise the temperature to the boiling point, the frog will not jump, dying in hot water. We players are (believing to, at least) slowly boiling the water... So imagine our confusion when we saw the frog (Kate) unexpectedly trying to jump out of the pot. The proposed 'corruption stat idea' maybe an efficient solution. My two cents about this: you get a flexible value from -x (frigid as south pole) to x (wet as a rainforest). You start your day at 0. Assign to every dialogue option a numerical value of corruption. Well, our Kate is able to see only the dialogue options below or above 1 point her current value (let's say that you can also see and choose something with a +2 or -2, but you have to cast a die for it, with some backlash if you fail). Choosing an option above will make her gain a point in temporary corruption. so if you consistenly choose the kinkiest and naughtiest options available to you, by the end of the day you can do something that at he beginning you never ever considered. Temporary or daily corruption points acquired unlock a new level of permanent corruption (to put it simply, after you gain 20 points, you will start your next day at 1 or 2 and not at 0 value). Oh, and alchool, pills, drugs will add some points. Feasible? BTW, all in all you are a great writer, so dont' get overly depressed about all this.

Kris Van Gucht

The build-up content was more enjoyable when it was tied into the life path. As it is now, there's a bit of a disconnect with the MC / I feel it's hard to truly immerse yourself in it ever since 1.6.1 and that tends to result in a 'just skip to the good stuff already' kind of mood instead.

Ok. So now that I’ve nearly finished playing this update, there are a few things I’d like to point out. Kate’s stage name is Dani. I always pick that name for her, because I just think it suits her best. But now Emilia’s stage name is also Dani. We can’t have two Dani’s working at the club. Is there a way you can go back and change Emilia’s stage name to something that is not offered as an option to Kate when she is first hired on? Second, I’ve already added my two cents regarding the plot of this update, but reading through the whole scene between Nin and Kate, it just makes no sense. Kate clearly is overreacting. The first time she encounters Bonaht at the club, she learns that the girls regularly go back to the VIP and have sex with him. As I recall, Kate seemed resigned to the fact that she may eventually have to do it as well. Her reaction to Nin totally negates her initial attitude about sex with Bonaht earlier in the game. I think that whole interaction with Nin needs correcting. Thirdly, how is her giving a BJ to him any different than having sex with Connor? Neither Connor nor Bonaht are actual customers, so is she really prostituting herself? In my opinion, she still hasn’t officially, but if she has, I would consider the Kob BJ to be a better example of that than with Bonaht. Plus, Connor is actually paying her extra for sex. So why isn’t that considered prostitution? If she’s not whoring herself with Connor, then she’s not whoring herself with Bonhat. On the other hand, if she is whoring herself with Bonaht, then she’s whoring herself with Connor. Now, the final thing I’d like to say is that the actual BJ scene made no sense. The way Kate was being eased into it by Steph, it was like it was her first time doing anything like that, and she’s already done a lot worse than giving a BJ to someone. It made her appear totally inexperienced sexually, like she was still a virgin or something. I realize that going back and rewriting a lot of the scenes will be a big undertaking, but I know you want it to be perfect. Maybe changing these few scenes would be a good place to start. 🙂

1, lmao i also have the same 'Dani' issue. It really confused me for a minute there. It would be cool if some kind of checks were run to prevent name duplication. But probably a minor thing overall. 2, Yes, fully agree about Kate needing to be lead in the blowjob thing. I haven't mentioned or seen it mentioned elsewhere. It got a bit lost in the reaction to the overall tone, i think. But that too felt off and wasn't especially gratifying.

John Jameson

In terms of content, I liked the reluctance but it felt too much with how I thought I played my Kate. The brief feelings of "am I really doing this?" in other updates felt just right with her kinks (all of them) but in this update it didn't seem to fit with her previous actions. Would be more fitting with a vanilla Kate but with tri-kink Kate was a little much. I'm always going to wish your updates were faster but it's your creative process so if I'm gonna support you I need to adjust my expectations.

Patternless

There are lots of opinions here on the blowjob scene, so i might as well jump in. It thought her reluctance was way overblown. I haven't gone down the options to try and keep her as pure as possible. If I did, this might have felt different. But she's been having sex with Connor pretty enthusiastically, she's had sex with Krangsk, She had sex with the guy during the GNO, and she blew the drug dealer. I'm sure I'm missing something. I can buy that she's nervous about being on camera and being judged by her peers, but that was only part of her objections. The way it played/read, it was like she was compromising her morals for the first time. At this point regret should come in cold water moments, and reluctance needs to evolve into redrawing red lines. It would take some work, but there is a way to tie her thoughts to previous decisions. I think her reluctance to open a social media page makes no sense. She's be green lit. The current mission is the most important. Other than that, the random bar encounters were a good idea, but not good to end the episode on. There was no hook.
