Another interesting exercise in trying to explain something invisible using a visual medium. Luckily, EW in CM is pretty limited- it's almost entirely communications jamming of varying intensities- so I think I've managed it.

It was fun getting audio visualiser out again though... less fun converting part of it to static.

Anyway, that was a fairly simple one to get out of the way and I've spent the rest of the week chewing through Semper Fi Syria Mission 7- the encouragingly named 'Flirting with Disaster'. Another chunky scenario, this one is a a bit less of a straightforward one than the last and is probably going to get a correspondingly chunky video. With a bit of luck I should polish off the script today and have a clear run next week (or over the weekend, we'll see).

I've also been poking away at the Winter Turn-by-Turn concept, which is looking promising. I've got a broad set-up where the CM battle (or battles) are at the end of a funnel starting with campaign level decisions and then filtering through air-air and air-ground engagements in Command Modern Operations. Hopefully, the Combat Mission at the end will feel grounded in a wider context and- although I want to find a good point between balance and challenge- also an entertaining battle.

Not that 'entertaining' doesn't necessarily mean fair! We'll see, but it's shaping up to look pretty cool. Hope you like desert MERDC!

How does Electronic Warfare work in Combat Mission? CM Basics

Does EW only affect radar guided SAM systems, or IR guided as well?

I wouldn’t expect EW settings in CM to have anything to say about IR guided SAM defense. In game terms, aircraft equipped with directional IR jammers are somewhat analogous to tanks equipped with APS. The performance of these systems should not be affected by the presence or effectiveness of a either side’s EW assets.

Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense. But on the other hand, airpower and anti-air in CM can be very skewy so it's decreasing the reliability of a already unreliable systems that don't get used that often anyway.

Really interesting vid that explains well. What I really struggle with is using UAV effectively, and different types. A vid on that would be lovely.

Thanks very much! UAV in CM are a bit finicky because they're so dependent on the spotting system, though they're good for firing arty into places you don't have direct LOS to.
