Yes, it's that time of year again. This is the introductory video to this year's Winter Turn-by-Turn: what's going on, how it's going to work and a little mini-war room episode explaining exactly what the scenario is.

That means it's time to Adopt A Pixeltruppen again: leave a comment down below if you'd like to sign up.

A couple of caveats:

There is a tier-based pecking order here: SuperTruppen and SuperYoutubeTruppen are at the front of the queue, followed by Patreon Pixeltruppen and Youtubetruppen, and whatever's left being available to non-members of all kinds.

I have (checks notes) 44 slots on the US side and 66 slots on the Soviet side. That's only 110 spaces: there are over 200 members between Patreon and Youtube, so there will be some picking of names from a hat if you're not a SuperTruppen of some description.

Right now, the plan is to do what we did last year and play a mirror battle, playing as the US in the Turn-by-Turn and the Soviets in the more conventional follow-up.

Sign-ups will close on the 27th, I'm aiming to start releasing videos on the 3rd.

So, go nuts!

Here are some screenshots of the forces so you can get an idea of what's going on on either side, if you have preferences for names, sides or specific teams/vehicles to command, leave them in your comment!

Ben Kerry

Sergeant Ben Kerry reporting for duty! 1st squad, 2nd rifle platoon, A company let's go!

Ben Kerry

Actually I think for the Flashpoint to happen Khomeini probably had to be assassinated by the radical leftists in the leadup to political crisis. (Organization of Iranian People's Fedaian attempted several uprisings historically). The Islamic regime is vehemently against all foreigners, especially Americans. And Iranians historically did not just "roll over" when Saddam invaded. I'd say that for the scenario to be in the margin of "realism", the Iranian state must be more destabilised than what it was in real life.

Sotemot

Sign me up, somewhere in the action, preferably with an ATGM. And +2 bonuses all around, crack, fit and so on 😉

Stephen Puckett

sppucke is back on station to be tossed into the meat-grinder on the US side. Looking forward to be plastered along a hillside!

Ben Kerry

Really like the possibility of "what if" outside West Germany. Afghanistan kinda exposed how unprepared Soviets are to contingencies outside their "comfort zone" (europe). It would be interesting to see how the Soviet tactics can be translated for the totally different terrains of Iran

Luke Frame

Hey hapless I’m an Radio operator attached to a battery, so if my name comes up and an FO team is available that’s what I’d prefer. If not then I’m down for whatever. (Frame) for the name.

Nicholas Shaler

2nd Lt. Nik Timofeiovich would like to command a Soviet platoon.

Idu_na_Vy

Hey Hapless! Idu.na.Vy would make a great NCO on either team! Preferably in a recon element, but obviously, it’s up to the discretion of the GENERAL🫡

Matthew Zaleski

Sergeant Zaleski signing up. Prefer a position where I die a horrible death.

Edward Wolffsohn

Wolffsohn, would like platoon commander if possible.

Ray L

I would like to be in a Soviet scout unit. A closer parallel than the movie Threads, this scenario could have been part of Harold Coyle’s novel Sword Point: an invasion of Iran by the USSR opposed by American troops protecting the Persian Gulf. There is a compelling part in that story where dug in American airborne troops defend against a textbook assault by a Soviet Motor Rifle Battalion.

Nicholas Shaler

Are you the famous Chap of Chap’s Games?

Nicholas Shaler

The slideshow was great. It was hard to tell where exactly history ended and fiction began.

David Chapuis

That’s me. Extremely famous 😂!!

Andrew Offen

US platoon leader or jeep mounted TOW team commander for me please if available. Squad leader would be nice too.

Jordan Carey

Anything armoured for me, cheers mate 👍 Jordanc001 for the name

Benjamin H

Benjamin Hedman. Any unit and side works. Cant wait to be red paste!

Aaron Kahler

"FNG" as another US Mortar team would be great.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

Threads I've seen, which probably helped me subconciously pick Iran, but I've not read any of Harold Coyle's stuff. Clearly I should!

UsuallyHaplessVideos

It's always interesting to see forces tailored for a specific theatre get sent somewhere else. To some extent, it really shows up the limitations of the Soviets.

UsuallyHaplessVideos

Potentially. One big caveat of using the Iran-Iraq War as an example is that the Iraqis were not only waging a limited war (ie. grab Khuzestan, negotiate peace) but did a really bad job of it. How well the Iranians would be able to fight off a high-tempo competent mechanised force is a bit of a different question. In any case, the area the Soviets are invading through from Afghanistan is pretty sparsely populated, so there shouldn't be that much resistance. Up around Tehran, things might be very different!

Ben Kerry

That's what's interesting about Soviet force design and strategy: I'm actually Chinese by birthplace, there was a guy on a forum which did an effortpost on the Battle of Zhenbao (Damansky) Island between Chinese and Soviet forces, the Soviets were badly unprepared for operations in the theater and was unable to dislodge Chinese infantry despite having much material and manpower superiority.

Ben Kerry

It might resemble the 2003 invasion of Iraq in some sense, I'd say if the Iranian regime is as "organised" as it was historically at that point they'd still be able greatly complicate logistics with Fedayeen-style units. Iranians are very adaptive regarding tactics, many of their actions such as the Beirut bombing means they are highly capable as an irregular force. However, I'd still say their irregular warfare activities will only sink in later during the operation. There sill need to be something that held Soviets at the gates. I think the big part about the timeline divergence is a generally more "permissive" environment with regard to American involvement. It seems like Iranians in this timeline is not as anti-American as they were historically. A big part of the Iranian regime's legitimacy comes from them portraying themselves as a shield against a perceived alliance of "Zionists/Americans". This narrative is still in full swing even to this day on twitter. It can still be argued that this narrative is more for show as Tehran has not been above colluding with American interests, as shown in the Iran Contra scandal, but it will be somewhat unrealistic to have Green Berets advising Iranian militias if the Khomeinists seized power as it was historically. Btw Love the lore with the Greenlight teams making an entrance, they are my favorite wacky piece of Cold War nuclear lore (aside from that chicken powered nuclear landmine) Sidenote about the USMC campaign in CMSF: It feels pretty bizzare to see some of the locations showing up in the news. Another thing about the campaign is that in the briefing Hezbollah made an entrance the game in "Dancing in Damascus", they are probably the Uncons you mopped up. Honestly I think the game did not really do the Hezbollahs and such more "organised" actors justice. According to reports from 2006 the average Hezbollah combatant is highly competent and possesses night vision and PPE. (I'd say the Tamil Tigers was the first violent non-state actor to achieve this kind of quasi-state military capability). It might be fun to make a game set in the 2010s to showcase how much insurgent capabilities have progressed. (back in early 2024 I wrote about how there should be a CMSF3 set in a hypothetical war in Syria 2027, many of my predictions and ideas seem to match what went down months later)
