The FO team of 1st platoon deserves a Medal of Honor or at least, maybe Staff Sergeant Duck can also get a Meritorious Service Cross or another Medal of Honor Specialist Andrew Offen probably can also get a silver star for his TOW gunnery that resulted in the destruction of an enemy BMP platoon and a T-72

Ben Kerry

I’d count it as “minor US victory”. Won’t call 2 bailed out tank crew and 3 rattled scouts “contesting”

Eldar1944

I survived! And helped take out a truck! Medal of honour anyone?😂🤣. I agree I would say minor US victory. Well done FO of first and those that took out all the BMPs!

Nicholas Shaler

That Soviet truck assault is reminding me of that SEAL attack across a runway in Panama.

Nicholas Shaler

This is an American costly victory. You stopped the Russian mechanized assault, which was the objective.

Ben Kerry

The FO team is probably going to get MOH for saving two men from enemy capture.

Ben Kerry

The one where they try to blow up Noriega's plane? OK, that one is "slightly better" considering they are kinda forced to conduct a dismounted attack on an enemy force with light armor with minimal external support. (I wonder what would happen if those podcast vetbros try to take Greenland or Canada)

Now doing some research for the 24th division, the preparedness is not really good in the 80s according to memoir of Gen. Galvin I'm going with an "revised" plan following Haplessverse that expands into Hackettverse. So the 9th motorised division will not show up (they and the 5th have really long deployment time and Fulda gap is going to happen). Even the 101st division might not show up (going to West Germany). Most of the forces are concentrated in Bandar Abbas before going north. The majority of "heavy" firepower will either be Marines (need to find organisational charts for them), and the 24th Mech (Oh no, my chemistry degree) (have been binge writing the lore to get out of my broken heart)

Yep. Costly for this Company perhaps, there are two more plus the remaining HQ elements and whatever else the 82nd brought along so overall... not too shabby. Of course, the Soviets are bringing more toys along as well.

I suspect there will be no one around to hand medals out by the time the paperwork goes through...

Split the viewing of this last video over the last two days. It was surprising to see CM designate the battle as a minor Soviet victory. The 'tactics' to gain that Soviet victory were unrealistic, but if CM is gonna calculate such factors into the victory conditions, it is what it is, I guess. I was mostly surprised to see the lack of effective employment of Soviet on-map artillery. 120mm mortars with a generous supply of ammunition and they were ultimately used to provide harassing fire on the far end of the airfield. For a side like the Soviets, artillery is vital for tactical success. The mortars could have been employed in a direct fire capacity as well. Or, given the rolling terrain on the eastern side of the airstrip, the Soviets probably could have setup an FO within close visual/audible of the mortars even. On the flip side, the US air assets were not very impactful. One F-4 got shot down and the other dropped ordnance in a single pass that took out a single Soviet IFV. Then it rtb'ed prematurely. It is fascinating to posit such a scenario. I have to say that for the time period such a result would have been within the norms of expectation for the US. It was that kind of time. The recent memory of the Vietnam war still weighed heavily on the nation at that time. I still remember that.

2026-09-08 14:00 A very satisfying and easy-to-follow turn-by-turn, at least compared to the intense cqb of rattenkrieg. I read through Harold Coyles 'Swordpoint' while you were releasing this, and this type of scenario happens in the book so it was nice to appreciate the similarity.

Gonna read Swordpoint for the next hour. (will probably base my google doc rambling about "Persia Predicament DLC" on it)

Based on my previous narrative definition, I would call this a US Minor victory. Soviet defeat with the US able to conduct platoon level defensive operations. The future depends on who can reinforce the fastest with the mostest. Having spent part of my early career in the 82nd, this is the part that concerned us most. Sure, we can get to the fight quickly, but who is going to back us up?

GLG

Very good point. That's the $64,000 operational question: how can isolated gains be held onto? In WWII, the Soviets called it 'winning the last battle.'

Ben Kerry

You were in 82nd? Wow! The problem with CMCW is that Sheridans are not featured in game, and as I have show in the community chat the TO&E for 1970s Airborne is somewhat incorrect, so the 82nd will lack a lot of assets it would normally have for a "big fight".

Ben Kerry

Depends on era and adversary. Modern Russian armed force is really into infiltration assault and establishment of bridgeheads, most attacks may fail but once bridgeheads are established most of the time the position will hold.

Duknarg

Third Squad it was an honor to lead you all in this engagement! You all did your country proud with your courage and professionalism in the face of such an overwhelming attack. We shall live on to tell the story of the fight that took the lives of many of our fellow platoon members.

I think Time was the critical factor in this battle, 30 mins didn't really give the Soviets enough time to adjust their mortars or really do any preparatory fires, or wait until they could build up significant mass. Combined arms only works if you can achieve local superiority in all three arms in time and space. Glad I got the F4's to do SOME work and notably avoiding fratricide when we're WAY inside the RED's. I know I would be SWEATING if I was doing Terminal Guidance Operations with unguided munitions, like 2-300 meters away from friendly forces working off map-compass-binos and talking to an AC with no targeting pod and 70's fire control.
