And phew! Turned into a battalion level scenario. And when you start splitting every squad down into 3 teams that makes for an awful lot of icons to shepherd about. But an interesting battle nevertheless.

I can't tell if I'm still adjusting back to WW2 level attrition from playing Semper Fi Syria all last year, guess we'll see in the next battle.

And that one is also battalion-sized-ish, though we're on the defence and there are only 30 minutes on the clock so it should be more palatable. Come to think of it, it'll be the first CM game where I've pitted 88mm Flak36s against Shermans... not sure why that hasn't happened before but something to look forward to.

In other news, there's a unit guide up next in the schedule. I have two micro-guides still up my sleeve that I can throw out, but it might be best to keep them in reserve and concentrate on something else. We just did two WW2 vehicles in a row (T70 and Archer)... must be time to go modern again.

Yeah! New update! According to someone on a few good men that mission is his favorite

Chris Hull

Played through this campaign ahead of your vids and really enjoyed this mission. It would have been way too easy with some on-map mortars so the 88s being as unwieldy as they are I felt balanced it nicely

Ben Kerry

Actually the cars can work as fire support if appropriately protected by infantry, think them as machinegun teams on wheels, infantry protects the machinegun Again, that car is an LRDG style raiding vehicle, historically speaking there were cases where particularly fanatic blackshirt units doing suicide charges on these things at British HQs like it’s Mad Max. One attack almost got a battalion HQ

Ben Kerry

What was your plan?

MASTER STEW

Nicely done, I have also been replaying this campaign since you started, its one of my favourites overall. Your attack plan was actually very similar to my own, though I ended up mostly punching through via the woods in the centre left, with a heavy concentration of most of my force, did not bother flanking much. Got very similar results, with a few more casualties on both sides, since I pushed till the clock ran low, and the enemy surrendered. Not sure if I can share my after action report on here? otherwise I would :D

basically identical to Hapless'

More people posting is always better

Should be able to make an AAR work in the Community Chat... thingy. Give it a shot if you like! If it works I can make a whole channel for them

The first shocker for me was seeing 88mm AAA used in an indirect fire capacity. I guess it was done in WWII, but wow. On the other hand, you use whatever you got in a pinch. They didn't do too bad either given the results on the Orchard objective. Cool that the Italians proved so helpful. They have such a weird TOE, I'd wondered if they would be any good. Odd to see the Brits hightailing it toward the Orchards at the latter portion of the scenario. Thinking on that, it would likely be the most reasonable thing to do, given their inability to support one another with firepower. In fact, playing the Brits might have been harder because of the isolation between positions. A fun scenario to watch nonetheless. Traversing relatively open, flat ground is always an exercise and you pulled it together pretty well.

Ben Kerry

Yeah, the indirect fire from 88mm was wild. The Italians in this mission seems to be part of their LRDG-equivalent commando unit that was fighting in North Africa. They probably represent the highest quality force of the whole Italian army save for the paratroopers who got annihilated in North Africa I always wonder would AI benefit from more triggers that calls for them to reinforce certain sections for "counter concentration".

UsuallyHaplessVideos

@GLG If you think using 88s in the indirect role is wild, you should see how often the Allies used M10 tank destroyers :P

GLG

And that's exactly the role the M10 should have had lol. The US SU-76M.

Game scoring aside, from the Brits point-of-view this could have been counted as a successful delaying action. They forced an advancing enemy to deploy and attack (twice), and the Paras preserved their force to fight again. The purchased time was valuable, knowing that substantial reinforcements were on their way.

Ben Kerry

OK, recommend looking up the historical battle

Ben Kerry

Would be interesting to have a H2H match based on this scenario

Ray L

Yeah, maybe the Paras could pull off a second ambush by abandoning the triangle wood and turning the field beyond into a kill zone?

Matthew Zaleski

When I played this mission, my plan was almost exactly the same as yours! I did recon-by-fire into the triangular woods which helped limit my losses there. However, I got jammed up at the farmhouse and lost more blokes than I expected taking it.

Ben Kerry

My theory is some sort of “active defense”. Outposts and covering force to identify enemy main effort, main body then maneuvers to the site of main effort to defeat enemy penetration attempt. The submachinegun heavy nature of paras means the optimum engagement range is at 50-100 meters. Recommend to split off Bren teams as some sort of ad hoc “weapons platoon”

Ben Kerry

Yeah, they should have made a stand. The fact that German fallschirmjagers have access to armored cars means that they practically have to conduct a strongpoint defense with no option to retreat

Cameron

The next mission is so good!

Ben Kerry

Someone on a few good men don't like the defense missions, he thinks AI don't really attack well.
