And... it kinda sucked, to be honest. This is one where I think map and forces really conspire to minimise the decision space for the player. Add in battalion+ forces and it's exactly the kind of mission I would immediately bypass as a single scenario. This is one of the problems with historical scenarios- sometimes they're a bit beyond what I would consider to be CM's comfort level.

Annoyingly, the next mission looks worse... but it's done. Hopefully it's more enjoyable to watch than to play.

In other news, work on the next War Room episode continues, as well as on various... other stuff. Loads to look forward to!

Love it. Massive bloodbaths have a glory of its own (OK, AI sucks at attacking)

Hearing your very relatable gripes about the scale of this one makes me interested how much you've looked at the campaigns from CMFB Downfall and CMBN BP2. A lot of those scenarios involve navigating half again as many teams as this scenario through huge bocage/town maps. The trend with the last several releases has really been towards a progressively unmanageable scale.

Ben Kerry

Yeah, that’s a problem with wargame designs in general, everyone love massive scale games with all the units beating each other up, but at the same time most sane players cannot manage such massive field.

Nice stuff as always. I'll post my own AAR in the community chat in a moment. I did more or less the same, though I managed to take out all 9 shermans by the end, partly I think as I repositioned my 88s quite a bit, though my poor 2nd company almost got completely decimated by the end☹️ Interestingly I think this might be one of my favourite defensive type scenarios in all of combat mission, certainly the most memorable. while there is very little room for extra tactics/manoeuvres, other than careful positioning at the game start, I think its a great set piece (especially the river/bridge) and awesome spectacle for a battle, with a bonus given its historical context. It seems to me that a large/battalion scale defence mission, is quite tricky to do well in combat mission, so all that is really left is spectacle, which this scenario did really well I think👍 defiantly not a super interesting mission but a pretty cool one :D

Would like to see a PVP version of this mission

I’m going to make a not-very-audacious prediction that in the near- or medium- term future AI will make managing large numbers of individual war game units less burdensome. It will also improve the behavior of AI opponents.

Sorry, RL took control and I've only just seen this now. That scenario did not look fun. Troop density was high, frontage was tight and over open ground, culminating in an attempt at establishing a bridgehead. That poor dumb Brit commander. Just seeing the picture of the map would have had me ready to drop half the tanks in exchange for as much arty/mortars as I could pull. The worst part of it is that the Brits were running into as many defending troops as they had, with 88mm guns to neutralize the Shermans. And these are Fallschirmjaegers too. You probably want to keep the bridge intact, so the arty barrage would have to be very specific in placement too. This really looks like a German win hands down. PvP would be an exercise in grit for the Brit player, sort of a Kobayashi Maru scenario (Star Trek reference for an assured losing battle).

Historically, it played out pretty much exactly like this. Which is certainly a win for that element of scenario design, I guess. Kobayashi Maru's are always interesting- we did the actual one in a Fight Club TDG series and I got lynched by my crew for just refusing to help.

Potentially. Part of the problem is that it can be difficult to explain to humans what you want to do, never mind a much more limited AI. (Though limits may be helpful depending on the calibre of human subordinates...)

GLG

I think the final assured defeat factor was being given a mere 37 minutes or so to capture the bridge? That tells me the higher ups didn't expect any resistance of import and weren't interested in anyone questioning why. Sort of a 'take that bridge, now fuck off' kind of order. I'm gonna have to find out more about the actual engagements there. Nothing like wargaming to draw me further into the muck of history!

TDG is sort of how you do physics homework. The answer isn't as important as how you solve the problem. Tactical Decision Game.
