"What's the best order to clear buildings with" is one of those questions that seems to crop up every now and again, so I thought I'd give it a go. Spoiler alert: it's a trick question.

Hats off to the dozens of pixeltruppen who gave their digital lives to try and answer this question and in the process demonstrated the fundamental gameplay loop of infantry tactics.

It was more fun than I'm willing to admit though and I really had to fight the urge to make a load of graphs out of the (insufficient) data I gathered.

With that out of the way though, it's back to La Grande Hameau to drag the British Rifle company kicking and screaming through the Company Challenge...

Actually from my experience the worst times are to clear buildings with multiple tiles, every tile must be suppressed at once, if this cannot be done there will be an attritional firefight inside the target building, which the attacker usually loses.

Also from John Spencer's "Understanding Urban Warfare": If you have done everything right, the entry team would only have to walk through rubble and dead bodies instead of having an attritional firefight inside the building.

The Philippines Marine doctrine for seizing buildings in Marawi rely on highly coordinated and scheduled fire support on different sectors of the building as the attack progresses

Urban defence might make a good short video as well? It took me a long time to realise buildings are not cover. Something Hapless says a lot. Look at those rounds go through the house! Road to Damascus is a good example (if you have a couple of days to watch all the videos).

Personally, I found this video extremely helpful. The formula since the old Squad Leader game days of yore have been to pound the crap out of the hex/location to be assaulted first, get the enemy to fail morale, then go in guns blazing. The thing is all games have their mechanics, even CM. I've used Assault movement a lot in CM, but after watching this video I'm likely going to pass on it. Thanks!

Or, to paraphrase what some guy named “Usually Hapless” said in his Firefight 4 video, it’s better to send a bullet than a body. Or something like that. I am curious about one thing. If my pixeltruppen are area firing one square, but they actually spot an enemy inside that area, will some switch to targeting that enemy rather than just blazing away at the general area?

UsuallyHaplessVideos

They should prioritise spotted targets over area targets. Though because they're pixeltruppen they're likely to apply this logic in the most erratic and disastrous way possible

UsuallyHaplessVideos

The joke that didn't make it in is that the best command for clearing buildings is "Target"

Yeah, well placed artillery solves a lot of problems heh. Even bunkers don't do well with direct fire arty. Unfortunately, CM doesn't allow for something like DF 122/152mm artillery guns, but here's hoping for CM3.

They wouldn’t be pixeltruppen if they did things the easy way.
