Everybody loves a good flamethrower. Unless it's pointed at them, I guess. Nobody uses them anymore though, which is undoubtedly a smart move: they have some severe disadvantages.

I did go into this week intending to make this video about unit formations (ie. line, wedge, column etc). That turned out to be more complex than I thought, so obviously I fell back on burning things.

Was tinkering about with Wasps the other day in a quick battle I set up. Fragile for sure but watching them melt a unit of pixeltruppen as it comes around the corner never gets old. And as an AoE, building clearance and area denial weapon flamethrowers - mobile or footbased - can be pretty nifty.

The curious thing is that flamethrower tanks tend to be a specialist sapper weapon attached only to high echelons expected to undertake some form of breaching operation against a dug in enemy, so in a lot of cases the flame tanks tend to be very specialized and are as such their flamethrowing ability tend to be seen as the primary value, as opposed to a secondary weapon. Read "Flame Thrower", a book on a Churchill Crocodile platoon commander D Day to Rhine, one of my favorite reads

I always feel sorry for the poor sot who carries the tanks of flaming death in his back. He is a volunteer? He is the one with the lowest IQ? Or perhaps he is just being punished by his sergeant?

I wonder if an infantry flamethrower mans specialized training meant he didn't have to do all the routine hazards of patrolling and walking point and night time raids and standing guard. Perhaps he was kept as a company or battalion level expert who had to maintain his dangerous gear and only be called upon as needed.
