The first invasion went so well, Napoleon just had to try again. Lots of map to this one, there's not really that much imagery of Peninsular War stuff around so I've fallen back on drawing lines and moving icons around. Even the map isn't period correct, but it gets the point across.

The campaign itself is a classic: the French get deeper and deeper into Portugal, owning nothing but the ground they stand on. This was originally just the introduction for the Battle of Second Oporto... things just escalated a little and it was clear this deserved it's own treatment.

Just waiting for Wellington to get back to the party now...

Was in amarante recently, the bridge still stands

There's a really good story about that actually- the Portuguese had rigged it for demolition and the trigger was a musket in a box they had linked via a cord to their nearest position (ie. pull the cord, fire the musket, musket sets off powder, bridge goes boom). French spotted the cord, worked out what was going on and were stumped until a captain of engineers came up with the idea of setting off an explosion on their bank and using the shockwave to cut the cord. Another ingenious win for the engineers!

Engineering yeah!

I don't know why but this just reminds me of Iraq War, the idea that Revolution in Military Affairs would utterly reduce troop numbers to a minimum, winning every battle and then the insurgency grew out of the lack of troop to civilian ratio... It's actually the enemy centric versus population centric problem

Bravo, Hap. It is so good to hear these history episodes from the point of view of someone who understands military strategy. Recent events in the world have proven (once again) that political leaders do not understand war. Your opponent may lose every battle but if they refuse to give up, what then?

Yep. The hard part is always convincing the other guy to give up... modern states especially are so populous and have so many resources at their disposal that they can just keep on going under incredible stresses.
