Hey patrons, I actually posted this to Discord a few days earlier but I also wanted to give it a go in here for those who don't use Discord.
You probably have seen this https://youtu.be/GRxCSIiGZuU
I was wondering if you have any input/ideas how to make this gameplay more interesting?
Currently, I'm working on a system similar to this: After prologue, you start in Ludus. There are 5 other gladiators in the Ludus which have their unique name and "skill". There are 4 other NPC's that you can interact - these are Surgeon, Cook, Supplier and Doctore As player, you have stamina/energy which gets replenished based the food you eat from Cook. Stamina gets drained if you are knocked out in arena or in training ground - it increases slightly every day. Each "training" increases your skills. You can get trained on that skill by simply approaching any of the gladiator and ask for training. They fight with you and each hit etc increases your skill. If gladiator specialized in one handed, you would get one handed weapon and it increases your skill. Doing training also drains your stamina to avoid training-bashing in one day. So technically you can only have 3 successful trainings.
Each successful training increases your relationship with the gladiator that you beat. This would come in handy if you want to revolt and trigger Act II ( but you need to be on certain level and relationship with all different gladiators ) After day is completed you can go back to your quarter and sleep for the next day. Lanista decides when you will go to match and where. There are different arenas - some are pitfights. Depending on your fame ( which can be super low if you keep losing ) you might go to pitfights. They are relatively more hardcore and high chance of you getting killed with less reward. After each succesfull match you earn fame and gold. Gold is used for transactions and such. Fame is for your status in general and if you are high fame, you can even gain your freedom.
In information screen you can see the upcoming match and prepare your "resources" based on that. This means, let's say you have an injury from previous training, you might choose to skip training that day to avoid further issues. Or you can pay gold to Surgeon to patch your injuries. And this is where Surgeon comes in place. He stands at the end of the hallway where you can visit him any day and get medical attention. Cook simply sells food that boosts your stamina for the next day. This stamina isn't actually a Skyrim type stamina but still affects your athletics. Meaning that if you go into arena with 0 stamina, you will move slower. So it makes sense to save your stamina for upcoming match. Supplier - well I'm planning where you can buy different equipment based on your class ( gladiatoral class ) although I'm not entirely sure on this. I'm also planning where you can buy a better bed or something which again passively contributes to your stamina. As mentioned on surgeon case, each damage you get can cause injury on you. This means head hits can cause head injury and so on. Each special injury also effects your swing/attack abilities. And also increases your chance of dying as well. Technically, game will be survival/storytelling/sandbox hybrid in some basic sense. However, I'm highly unsure about this repetitive logic. I feel like it can be very boring easily. What do you guys think?
