The Battle of Philippi (42 B.C.E.)

It's here!  Much anticipated, the story of the largest battle in Roman history [PROBABLY].

I also took this opportunity to just straight up *TRICK* people into learning about this weird little incident with Hortensia which has always captured my imagination.

Enjoy!

Ave Historia Civilis!!! Thank you for this blessing

Historia Civilis

(The subtitles on this video are on their way, give it a couple of hours.) (Also, if anybody is having trouble with the video buffering, try clicking the gear in the lower right and manually bumping the video quality down. I upload in 4k, and by default Vimeo likes to try to run at the highest possible video quality.)

I wish I had become your Patreon sooner! You’re the best!

Wyattrox03

Yes, this made my day sooooo much better! Thank you, you are the best history channel on YouTube.

Dang Quang

Best video of the month. Thank you for your work

George Fairhurst

Just watched this on the bus back home, tremendously good video

Scott Walker

I don’t know roman history past Cesar being assassinated, this is mental lol what a mess 😂 they have to turn on each other rite? Excited already for your next vid now, bravo, great work as usual 👏🏼👏🏼

Martin

haha first and currently only vimeo follower, nice. amazing video!

Petr Čech

That was a mess. How could Roman war craft got so bad over a few years? :-D Btw I was able to watch the video on vimeo site, is that right? I taught it should work only in here.

Glenn Boswell

Roman battle naming: does what it says on the tin!

Maaruin

Nice, now I can see who won the civil war early.

Marat Vardanyan

Great video! So happy you are continuing the timeline! Please keep it going at least until the establishment of the Empire

Nobody679

I am really surprised at why they did not divide their legions into groups and instead made a parallel authority to help command their massive army, I thought it would be common sense to pick the former

Steve Olsen

Fantastic as always my man. Cheers!

Rosie Hobsbawn

Cassius what the hell, you didnt have to that :/

frostedflakes

Sweet, I never knew on Hortensia. It's always awesome to see women in history, thank you for educating me on it!

Krashnachen

Goddam trigger-happy suiciders these Romans

Erilobar

This was really interesting. For a battle that's so incredibly fundamental to the end of the republic, it's almost painful to watch the difference between these people and Caesar. I already miss his forward-thinking. (And, too, his habit of writing down everything in excruciating detail. Notice how much information we have on the movement of specific units with Caesar's battles?). I truely wonder if more could have been done by either cassius of Marc Antony, commanding alone, and with less legions. I can only presume there was a reason there was (probably) never a battle this large again, even while the empire grew in size and wealth.

Scott Walker

Sounds brilliant lol I still think I’ve room for a bit more dislike of Antony lol

Historia Civilis

It's so interesting. It really shows how militarily, Caesar and Pompey were in a class all of their own. Antony in particular really liked to cultivate his reputation as a great general, but like... he was a sub-commander under Caesar at the end of the Gallic Wars, which is like... fine... but obviously all of those victories belong to Caesar. Then he fought this minor campaign against Decimus, and then he fought at Philippi, and although both of those ended in victory, neither were really that impressive. Then his later campaigns after this... even less impressive! I guess I'm a bit of an Antony skeptic.

Erilobar

That's all very true. In fact, I would say that this whole period is filled with people who managed to ride their way to the top of the ladder on the backs of either Caesar's faction or Pompey's.

Kshitij Shah

This Octavian looks like a real looser. I bet no one will remember him, let alone naming a month after him.

Jacob Wills

would be a shame if...... the triumvirate would......... collapse......................

JustlookingCQ

The Romans were the Japanese of Antiquity. Suicide considered honorable? Check. Massive public bath houses? Check Conquered most of their neighbors? Check.

Nobody679

oh yeah, totally forgot

Thomas Fear

goddamn brutus sucks so much

Scritch

At around 2:10, are you saying 'vague historical precedent'? If so, you mispronounced 'vague' - the 'a' should be a long a, as in 'wage' or 'hay', not a short a as in 'wag' or 'bag'.

Scritch

Btw excellent video; I'm a new patron and I've been wanting to join a lot sooner :3

Kasim

they would do a stupid thing like that" because they are all bunch of fools. 😂

Patrick McCarron

From my understanding, that really wouldn’t be that common and effective until Napoleon implemented the corps system nearly 2,000 years later.

Dang Quang

Well the Battle of Lugdunum is also the largest Roman battle in the Imperial era (both sides have 75k troops) and the strategy seemed to be very simple as well. But of course that battle is not as messy as the Phillipi

Scritch

Is that how it's said in Canadialand? I wasn't aware, sorry :3

Chris Hardy

Just FYI I'm still having the same problems with Vimeo stuttering :( I don't mind waiting for Youtube, though. However, I don't think it's a buffering issue, since the video displays as being buffered out 2 or 3 minutes past where I am and I'm on 240p.

Chris Hardy

Update: It seems to work fine when I bypass the embedding and go straight to the Vimeo link. So I'll try that in the future!

Emperor Claudius

Next video will be called Pirates of the Mediterranean and the curse of Sextus Pompey

I couldn't wait any longer, and had to get on patreon for that early access :P
