Peace...? (1814)

In the summer of 2020, I began the "readin bout boats" phase of my life.  This is the first video to bear fruit from all that reading.  As predicted, boats are mentioned literally zero times.

Last year I started INHALING books about the 19th century British Navy, and over time this slowly expanded into books about the political history of the 19th century.  Read biographies of Metternich, Bismarck, Gladstone, Napoleon III...just went nuts with it.  And also continued reading bout boats.  And politics.

The Draft 1 placeholder title for this video was "Who Gives a Shit About the 19th century?", and through all of its revisions it still held onto that same idea.  If the video works at all, it should say to people "I know you don't care about the 19th century, but if you look at it through this lens it was actually really really really important."

That lens is, of course, an anti-war lens.  I make that pretty explicit in the video.  There's that Francois Truffaut quote that's something like... "every film about war ends up being pro-war."  It's a trap that most people fall into, including myself.  It's EXTREMELY easy to glamorize the French Revolution, and I bent over backwards not to do so.  I felt that it was important to put the French Revolution and Napoleon it in the same "category" as World War 1, and to describe all wars of this scale as some type of failure.  The parallels to our own run of 75+ years of peace is also made explicitly in the video.

ANYWAYS!  I intend to have more to say about all of this, and lots more to say about Metternich & Friends.  Antony & Octavian stuff is proceeding as well, I like to have 2 projects "in the works" so that I can jump between subject matter whenever I get stuck.

...Peace!

What an unexpected and pleasant suprise. Keep up the good work :)

Mark Bobkiewicz-Greene

Very interesting topic and very well covered thanks for the great content

Peter A

EEEEEEEEEE!!!!! IT'S FINALLY HERE!

Jed Cordell

feels like this is leading up to more videos about modern politics like your old NATO videos

Scritch

Ahhhh! Very well done. I'm not terribly politically savvy but I'm pretty sure I understood everything. =) And I really appreciate how careful you are to avoid glorifying conflict; equating conflict with failure is *genius*.

Robert Jarman

A thing to note is that even more conflicts are smaller than they used to. Now, in the US, as high as their military budget is, is less than 4% of GDP. The NATO standard is 2% of GDP. Even accounting for it being government spending not GDP, in many countries it is less than 14.5%. You just see some countries going on a rampage of budgets like North Korea.

Robert Jarman

As well, fewer than 100 thousand people were killed last year in war, about 1/7 the number people killed by regular homicides and less than 10% those killed in automotive accidents, and a majority of those deaths are in a few specific countries like Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Mexico, and Ethiopia, and we do have some ideas as to ways towards peace for most of the biggest conflicts. If the human species can get by the next century, we have realistic probabilities of controlling the solar system.

aspjr2013

This is the greatest video of all time.

babe, babe wake up, new historia civilis video just dropped

Bit Moto

Great Video! Hope we'll pass the 99 years this time.

James Bush

While I'm definitely looking forward to the final showdown between Octavian and Antony, this was a great opportunity to look at the 19th Century from a perspective people don't typically look at.

T G BYAM SHAW

"these people are known as sickos" GO. OFF. KING.

Léo Ricca

I absolutely love this extra content you create based on concepts of rule, power, and political philosophy (may not be the right term but gets the right idea). Its a perfect blend for a casual viewing and quality content. Continue to bless us pls

bel0919

" If the human species can get by the next century, we have realistic probabilities of controlling the solar system. " wait, wasn't them saying so the past century ?

LiterallyJudas

Ooo lovely a new buffer video between the Trial of Charles and the NATO series

Cam Bish

Absolutely fantastic. The beginning of Nationalism on the periphery, the Concert of Europe around the corner, and a delicate peace through the 19th Century. I cannot wait for the next.

Ryan Somelofske

I came to the $3 level because I thought maybe there actually will be boats, I am staying for peace on earth!

Pluto

Not at all what I was expecting… and absolutely zero complaints from this department! As always a well crafted and fascinating video, while I’m chomping at the bits for the continuing saga of why the heirs to Caesar are arrogant, incompetent and deranged freaks and the world would have been better if Lepidus was in charge I do enjoy the scene change! :D

Austin Oberg

All your content is fantastic. Love what you do.

Ivan Trapić

Nice! Always glad to see your videos! :)

Zachary Clawson

This video was along your best! It may have just unseated Caesar Crosses the Rubicon as my favorite video of yours. I can’t WAIT to see what’s next!

Craig VG

Ok this video was epic

Leo Hannan

Oh man, I hope Talleyrand makes an appearance in the next video. Everyone's favourite atheist cardshark ex-bishop and grifter extraordinaire.

lazarusinashes

I loved the video! I also want to put in a quick F for everyone who thought it was the HRE

Joshua Schneider

The video was a departure from ones devoted to exactly what happened to trying to explain why they did. I like that you're branching out, but I don't think you hit the mark here. The philosophies are oversimplified, the statistics are vague, and the voice is unclear. Are you expressing your views, presenting a specific historian's argument, or trying to summarize several books on the topic? This is worthy of exploration, but the presentation didn't resonate with me.

Fernando López Ojeda

That was so satisfying to watch. I am so ready for this Concert of Great Powers thing to turn into a series.

Shawn MacIntyre

No great power conflicts in the 19th century? That's a very Euro-centric view. You can't talk about the 19th century without talking about the Tai Ping Rebellion -- the deadliest conflict of the 19th century, which killed roughly the same number of people as WWI -- which drew in the great powers. Secondly you have a large series of great power conflicts in Asia. Many of these, such as the Opium Wars, are more consequential on our modern world than WWI. I suggest revisiting your thesis as it doesn't hold up the history -- unless you squint on only think Europe matters. Edit to add, there was Russo-Japanese war too which was a Great Power War as it signalled that Japan was a Great Power.

Bruce Provine

Iraq war... not America's finest moment. The Malaria and AIDS program GW started was pretty nice though.

Simon Wolfe

Another 10/10. You're brave for this one, looking forward to the next!

Anton Ingi Sveinbjörnsson

Another great video. Just a few things. I think that the audio clips when you first mention the 30 years' war. And secondly, your maps look sooo good!

oWallis

If you're not with me...... Then you're my ENEMY

Historia Civilis

I mean, the video is about Great Power Conflicts. I went out of my way to give a technical definition of what a Great Power is. China and Japan were not Great Powers during this period, so that's why they didn't come up. Japan didn't really achieve a global influence until 1919, so that's when I would argue they became a Great Power. Some people argue earlier, which is fine, but certainly they didn't become one until *after* they won the Russo-Japanese War. After the war means... after the war was over, not before. I'm not insulted if you didn't like the video, or thought it should have been about something else or had a completely different scope, but... the Great Power Conflict thing is a well-sourced historical trend, I didn't invent this idea all by myself. It's the reason that I went back to Hobsbawm so many times in the video. The century of peace between Great Powers thing is a thing that serious historians talk about all the time. I'm not on thin ice here.

Patrick Siu

By not watching the video first, I assume HC views Napoleon as a predecessor of Hitler. (Spoiler: I am wrong. No mention to individuals whatsoever) (1:48) I don't know, but was there any occasion in history where some people (commoners I mean) would find what was thrown against them too much and decided that they had so little to lose that war, where everyone loses, is not as bad as it suggests? (3:20) So you think the Opium wars and the Sepoy rebellion, etc. were insignificant? I have a feeling that those 99 years were at the expense of Asia. (17:45) As a Hongkonger whose place is being bullied (a massive understatement) by a stronger and politically closed suzerain (China), I must say realists and idealists both have a point (my personal view on war is realist although I see the problem itself as an idealist) but Marxists (not the Chinese government - they are realists) don't quite fit our situation, although some may argue that it's the poor (Chinese common people) perpetrating the rich (their Hong Kong counterparts). Conclusion: An insightful introductory video. Let's see what's next -- I suppose the series will span over, say, 2 or 3 years?

Patrick Siu

If Lepidus was in charge we would probably ridicule him just like how we ridicule Octavian today.

Patrick Siu

Wishful thinking I am afraid. Usually this kind of calm is the one just before a BIG storm. Just like how stock prices like to flatline for a long while before having a very disturbing fluctuation. And I kind of see where the next big storm will be from...

Pluto

Now I’m curious - what would a Lepidus led Rome look like 🤔

Patrick Siu

China *was* a great power even in the 19th century, and quite probably *the* greatest (at least in terms of economy and influence to its immediate surroundings), but it's also a *closed* power, and to be fair there were no other great power for it to interact with, except maybe Russia.

Nicklas Kulp

I think you should make more of a distiction between Liberalism and Social Liberalism. That part of the video really made me stumble, because it sounded like you were basically saying "Those damn libruls are sick warmongers", when in reality I think you were trying to say "Classical Liberals that want to achieve alignment at all cost are sick warmongers"

xxx

I've been in the same headspace as you during this pandemic .... those 99 years.

Liam Pender

what's the global spending when you remove the US from skewing the data?

JustNoOne

Do you plan to make a video on the Aftermath of Octavian/Augustus winning the civil war?

Charlie Johnson

Excellent video as always, always interesting to hear about things outside of antiquity. One thing I would say is that people calling themselves 'Liberals' who believe that war can be ended forever should be called Utopians. I know it is a general video, but there is surely a big difference between Liberalism and Idealism, even if they are linked.

Patrick Siu

Do you mean "biased"? What do you think the video is biased for or against?

Federico Naranjo

I also had to look this up: "A word used when you agree with something; or when you want to recognize someone for being themselves, i.e. courageous and unique or not caring what others think. Especially common in online political slang. The opposite of cringe, some times the opposite of biased." https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=based

larry82

I think it's very important to look at the broad picture and not only to see every historical event for itself. Great video!

Cassandra Hall

Wasn't expecting a condemnation of recent war crimes and criminals, but I'm here for it.

Matthew Speidel

This will provoke a shitstorm of comments from all sides when you post it to YouTube. I can't wait. <3

ccplz

The US spends a lot of money on the military in absolute terms but not in terms of % of government spending so I don't think it would skew the data.

ccplz

Pretty cringy to use that word tbh

Bryton J Swan

great stuff! i must admit I did not expect to ever see condoleezza rice in a historia civilis video

EmblemCast

This is perfect timing! I've just been binging the French Revolution season of Mike Duncan's Revolutions podcast. His book Storm Before the Storm on the Gracii and Sulla Era is incredible as well. Great episode as usual. It was fantastic to see a slightly more editorial take with this one. You are truly my favorite history channel on YouTube, you don't over produce and distract the viewer with flashy animation or sound effects, while always having brilliantly researched scripts and topics. I'd love if you could give some reading recs on the French Revolution/Napoleon, I'm finding it incredibly fascinating.

Jack Pieper

Better be setting the stage for a Napoleonic wars series ;) Great Video. Love your work!

Gintaras Valentukonis

Quality over quantity, but is there some reason why you are releasing only 3-4 videos a year now? Do you have a patreon goal in mind that would speed things up?

Gintaras Valentukonis

Nitpick, but though they may not have known this when they made the new calendar, as someone who prefers BCE/CE you should be aware Jesus is now asumed to have been born in 4BCE.

Oriskó Norbert

I am not sure that he is creating less content than before, actually. The lengths of the videos are increasing. But I would too prefer shorter, but more frequent videos, if I had the choice.
