My show is on

Kelsey

The scream i just scrumpt, my boyfriend ran out to check on me

RepTVgirly_showgirl

Hearing this song for the first time, was the night of the release. Headphones on, in the dark...I sobbed so fucking hard 😭 TTPD is a lyrical and production masterpiece to me.

Molly C

we are so spoiled lately!

RepTVgirly_showgirl

Those opening vocalizations mimic the bells at Westminster Abbey for weddings and funerals and when I realized that it made this song hurt so much worse 😭💀

Kelsey

Ugh this whole album is so important to me. Even in the best relationship I've ever dreamed of i love a sad, wordy, song where you can hear the artists pain and this album is FULL of it.

Kelsey

I've always thought of them as the London tower bells (as someone who has never been to London so idek) this is so cool to hear!! Thank you for sharing!

SidekickSteph

This song is amazing, it’s one of her best.

Kelsey

She also wrote how did it end? About how the media and even friends and family react to when you break up with a partner and i think you guys would love it

Jennifer

Would love a TTPD The Anthology reaction!

Amos McShamus

https://youtu.be/2FLdLbaCrtM?si=RJXoDJmnxIi08SYG Since yall like podcasts, this is a great one! These two are a lovely duo who talk about the poetry of Taylor Swift. This episode has some great possibilities about Easter eggs in So Long London, which we know Taylor loves to hide.🫶

Amos McShamus

The TTPD album has literally been called therapy. So if you're ready to go through therapy... DIVE IN!

TopTierTaylor

One item that I don't think has been mentioned to you yet is there is a song called London Boy on an earlier album that (sort of) chronicles the early part of her relationship(s) with a few people and even with London itself. After you hear it, So Long London is even more scarring because she was so hopeful during the early days of this time in her life that quickly gave way to years or anxiousness and uncertainty. Thanks for all the Tay-content - you are both awesome. TTT

KBex20

Thanks guys! 🫶🏻

Emma Schultz

Great reaction! My advice would be to react to the most RECENT album “The Life of a Showgirl” FIRST and THEN react to “TTPD” because 1. You will be able to hear the contrast of the two and 2. That way you start right where she is in life now:) Can’t wait for more reactions!! You guys are the BEST!

Kennedy Peery Corbridge

Yeeeeszsss! What a poetic way to start my Sunday! TTPD is such an emotional catharsis. One of my holy grail, top 3 Taylor albums. 🥹⭐️ And, Fun little tidbit, the intro is supposed to mimic the sound of ringing church/funeral bells 🔔🫶

Hannah

One of my favourite Taylor songs. Not that i dont love your reactions so far but so far theyve been quite like… mainstream. I love those songs but i adore Taylors more niche songs, like So Long London; Champagne Problems; My Tears Ricochet for example. Tortured poets and Evermore for me are lyrically her best.

Leah Dawn

I absolutely love that someone requested this song for you. It is truly one of Taylor’s most heartbreaking creations. For some context, Taylor, and Joe Alwyn (a British actor) dated for six years. When you listen to her “Lover” album you will experience the joy and magnetism they had together. Taylor was enamoured by him, and she was just coming out of her horrible experience with Kanye and Kim. She felt completely alone and as though the press was tearing apart her reputation. People were turning on her and calling her a snake, all without knowing the truth of this situation (which would come out later.) She met Joe during this time and was grateful for the fact that he didn’t care about any of the horrible things being said about her. He is a very private person, and was not swayed by any of the bad press she was getting. Their romance bloomed while she took a break from the Spotlight for nearly a year. She lived a quiet life with Joe, and this enabled her to heal and also gain the confidence to write “Reputation” as an anthem of taking back her identity. Taylor speaks of Joe’s depression, quite often in various songs. He is often represented by the colors, blue or gold. He is notoriously shy and absolutely hates the limelight. This created major tension within the relationship once Taylor rose back to fame and decided to tour again. It was very rare to see Joe accompany her anywhere. Award shows, concerts, etc. She would almost always show up alone. He wanted a quiet life, which Taylor could not give him. You should listen to the song “Peace” which describes this predicament perfectly; asking the question: “Would you still love me if I could never give you peace?” This song is her final goodbye to Joe, but there is another song which came before this called “You’re losing me.” It is also one you should check out. It is basically her telling Joe that their relationship is dying, and she is begging for him to do something to change the fate. It’s also very raw and vulnerable. It shows us, again, that Joe is a person deeply affected by melancholy. Throughout the relationship, Taylor would constantly be asked when they were getting engaged? When they were having kids? I think she wondered that herself. That’s why at the beginning of this song you hear her singing like Church bells. Representing either a wedding or a funeral. When she says. “ I’m pissed off I gave you all that youth for free” it’s often been suggested that she’s referring to the prime time in woman’s life to have children. She held on for too long with dreams that were never realized. Also, in this song, she says “You swore that you loved me but where were the clues? I died on the altar waiting for the proof.” Which I’ve always taken to mean she held on and hoped they would be married eventually, but she died waiting at the altar because he chose to succumb to his depression instead of saving their relationship. There’s so much more I could say about this song. It ties into many other songs, and while there is some anger put toward Joe here, in every song she’s mentioned him since their break up, she has only expressed grief and sadness. Unlike other relationships she’s written about with sarcasm, hatred, etc. She did believe Joe was the love of her life, often using the phrase “ A touch that was my birth-right,” signifying her belief that she was born to be with him. It’s very sad all around, but now seeing her with Travis is like a breath of sunshine. She’s finally emerged from the blue days into a new era of happiness.

Moony's girl

I've noticed that many people don't like the life of the showgirl so much because they have gotten used to so many mostly sad and depressed Taylor albums with deep lyrics and lots of crying, and that is good, because they are good albums, but now that Taylor is happy and wants to write happy songs, they feel like maybe they can't relate to the songs as much or they want just more sad Taylor songs and that's a problem. Of course not all people but many. But showgirl is the first album in six years where Taylor hasn't sung about offing herself so I'd say it has my support as a good album, even though I too like the tortured poems department the best.

Bruce Brown

I'm not sure if they're ready for TTPD.

Rene' Guerieri

'how much sad did you think I had, Did you think I had in me? How much tragedy? Just how low did you think I'd go? Before I'd self-implode' been here.

Kennedy Peery Corbridge

I think what’s so beautiful about Taylor is there’s something for everyone!!! Every mood. Every season of life. So maybe the most recent album doesn’t float your boat…. Now. But maybe 3 years from now, it’ll be everything you need to hear and feel. But also, it’s a great emotional access tool! Need energizing pop… 1989! Need to dance with your young girl parts…. fearless and speak now! Want to feel everything… TTPD! Want moody emotional exploration sprinkled with pop bangers.. Red!

Kennedy Peery Corbridge

Also I’ve found we all sorta listen to music for different reasons. For example, when my husband listens to music, it’s so he can get into his body, move/dance, feel rooted. And when I listen to music, I’m usually gravitating toward wanting to do like mental puzzles, make connections, and go down a more emotional/inward rabbit hole.

Leah Dawn

Thanks! I feel like I could say so many more things, but it was already so long! I’m sure you understand exactly what I mean. 😂❤️

Karin Rommel

Tortured Poets Department is my favorite but least listened to album. I adore the songs and I feel them deeply. I feel them for me and I feel them for her. So I end up listening to many of these songs less than I do others. Its one of the reasons I love to listen to them with people who are hearing it for the first time...it takes me a little out of my "feels" and let's me appreciate the songs!

Rene' Guerieri

yes obviously TLOAS is a remarkable album, it's what brought These 2 Awesome people into the Fandom and i've believed from the Beginning TLOAS would be an album bringing in New Fans. so many not swifties i Know have decided to check her out just based on TLOAS

Sophie

You're Losing Me would be a great reaction to do next! I'd say that song is the build up to this one, and it's also just as incredible. She released You're Losing Me after their split was announced, but it was written around the time of her writing Midnights. 💙

Moony's girl

I'd suggest you start from the most recent albums and work backwards from there! I've seen some other reactionists do it thay way and I think it works well too!

Marie

Oh damn I haven’t even started the video yet but I know I will bawl, I was lucky enough to witness this 😭🥺

Christina D

This song ties close together with «you’re losing me». She has a line «My face was gray, but you wouldn't admit that we were sick», and in so long London she’s getting her color back, and in «but daddy I love him» she sings «if all you want is grey for me», which is a reference for her relationship with Joe. (Everyone was saying how they wanted her back with Joe after the break up, and that pissed her off).

Kenz

I’m not sure I’ve ever been more excited for someone to hear the entirety of TTPD. Alanna is going to lose her mind! I just feel like she is the perfect person to hear that album. It’s going to resonate with her so much, based on how she has reacted to TTPD songs thus far. TTPD is probably the album of Taylor’s that I feel the deepest. It really offers a melancholy release!!! 😂

Lindsay

Have you listened to “Invisible String” yet? I think you’d both really love it. Plus then you can watch the Taylor/Travis invisible string moments. She wrote the original song about Joe, but there’s so many ‘signs’ that pointed to Taylor and Travis ending up together. It’s fun and cute.

Lindsay

Same. Headphones in the dark. TTPD wrecked me. Still one of my faves but it’s so emotionally heavy

Lindsay

Scrumpt will never not kill me 😂

Mex

taylor did a song with aaron dessner and bon iver's collaborative group big red machine called renegade. it's technically not a taylor song, but she wrote the melody and all of the lyrics. listening to it would let you know more about what it was like for her to be in a relationship with joe. she and joe were in love, and she moved to london at the time of being cancelled by kim and kanye. less hate there, less paparazzi. i think joe thought taylor's big career was over because of the cancellation and he could have her without the fame. but she came back with reputation and just gained more popularity every album after and he hated being in the public eye with her. he liked it better when she had a small life. she learned to tell herself she didn't really want to be married - her real feelings came out in so long london with "i died on the alter waiting for the proof" - so she could try to be happy with him. he just didn't want to be married to her. then she left and started up again with matty healy from the 1975 and he immediately promised her marriage and kids. got her hopes up and then it all came crashing down when he ran back to england weeks later. i can do it with a broken heart is so literal. she was crushed by the two breakups in quick succession. taylor is a romantic and loves so hard. it's nice that travis meets her energy in love. thank you for the eras tour video, btw. it was really fun to watch it again with you

Jennrw13

Yes! All I kept thinking about during this reaction was "You Losing Me"!

Jennrw13

The BBC Radio live version of her singing London Boy is the best performance of that song.

Christian Seibold

Now you need to do You're Losing Me, if you haven't yet. It's one of her best. Btw, I actually love The Life of a Showgirl as equally as I love TTPD and Folklore/Evermore. Different purposes and genres don't make different rankings for me. I love all of them equally for different reasons.

Yvonne Barrett

Please do Dr John Live from the speak now tour

Kiya Simons

Thank you both for doing this reaction! Alanna - love that purple with your hair - so nice!

Brandie QuirkyBee79

You’re losing me and so long London connection to each other! Should definitely do it!

Vicki S

Agree, this is a great podcast, gotta love Uncle Jerry 🥰

Seres

Thanks for this! Such a good reaction. My favourite line from this song is "you sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days" - it's so profound and relatable. The idea that a person couldn't see just how much you were drowning and that inevitably you just have to save yourself before they pull you under. This album came out a week after a breakup with a person who really struggled with their mental health and would take it out on me/our relationship. The whole album was so painful but SO cathartic. I can't wait for you guys to react to the whole album, it really tells a story. <3

Alile

Yessss!! I would have recommended YLM as the first listen and then SLL, because of the lyric connections. I never get tired of reactors hearing those lines in SLL and getting that 🤯 look on their face when they remember the corresponding lines in YLM. It just makes two already powerful songs hit even harder.

Alile

I love how openly and proudly he loves her, how comfortable he is in the spotlight, without trying to steal it, and without feeling intimidated or resentful when all eyes are on her instead of him. How he doesn’t hesitate to be a goofball. Like, the end of the Opalite video, where they’re doing this ridiculous dance and no one is impressed, but they’re having the time of their lives and don’t care what anyone else thinks, that’s 100% Taylor/Travis. There’s literally videos of them behaving like that together in public (obviously not with a choreographed routine and matching tracksuits 😂). Taylor is an incredibly talented songwriter, and she’s very smart and serious about her craft, but she’s also a total dork, and she needed someone who appreciated and celebrated every facet of her. And it seems like she finally found him.

Alile

Honestly, the anxiousness and uncertainty are there on Rep and Lover, too, just not as intense. And I think it’s a different kind of anxiety wondering if the guy you’ve been in a relationship with for years actually wants to be with you than worrying that the guy you’ve been casually seeing for a few months isn’t willing to commit to you. But there are so many lyrics on Rep and Lover that point to her wanting him to be with her in the beginning of their relationship, and him being non-committal and only wanting to keep it casual. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it seemed like she had anxiety about his feelings for her in one form or another from day one, and it’s sad that she probably felt insecure and unsure in that relationship for a lot longer than she felt secure and confident in his feelings for her. 😕

Alile

Track 5 is always thought to be the most vulnerable, but on TTPD, it has a lot of competition. 😂 That whole album, including the anthology, is so raw and unfiltered. She doesn’t hold back, she doesn’t soften the edges, it’s like “Here is every awful, sad, painful, depressing thought in my head (and some good ones). Sorry, not sorry. Deal with it.” 😂 Some people said she should have “edited” herself, and that there are songs that are unnecessary and don’t need to be on the album. And I’m not going to pretend it’s a zero skip album. But out of 31 songs, there are only like 4 I don’t really care for (and 3 of those seem to be favorites for a lot of other people, so…).

Jodi

The beat of this song just feels like constant anxiety. I always thought that was intentional to show how she felt in the relationship.

Alile

During the live performance, I love the little smile she gets right after she sings “I’ll find someone” for the first time. Idk if this was one of the London shows that Travis was in the audience for, but they were definitely very much together at this point, so she had every reason to smile at that line. 💜

Camille

Love it!!😊

Maria De Luca

Thank you so much! Loving your content and love how open and vulnerable you both are. I'm excited tonwatch your taylor swift journey! You really need to do "you're loosing me" it's like the part 1 to this and it's such a good song! Also "dear john" live speak now tour version and "would've could've should've". Thanks again

Marie

I get this so much and agree with what you said about resonating with Taylor. I don’t have a good relationship with my mom and my dad left when i was little and I never got an explanation for anything that happened. There are so many songs I can relate to my own experiences around this topic. It’s crazy how her writing is so open to “interpretation” and one’s own feelings. I found Taylor during the red era when I was a teen and even without necessarily understanding the songs fully there was something about her music that just draws you in and feels almost like a hug. Now I’m an adult and hear all those words with “adult” ears and understand them, however, the feeling of her guiding me through life with her music is still the same. There really is a song or era for everything you go through.

Marie

I don’t think you’re ready for the tortured poets department, especially the anthology. It’s gonna get you guys 🥲 i wonder though if it would be beneficial if you started with miss Americana before going through the albums? I think you’re so fresh into the current Taylor lore through the documentary and the eras tour I think it would be good to see where she came from now because you’ll see how it all correlates and pieces together

Angela Nina Carilla

If you want to deep dive on Taylor.. i would like you to start from the beginning, the debut album.. since most of her discography is autobiographical, it will give you more context on her.. most specially when you reach TTPD..

Nicole Andrews

There is so much for you to watch. There are documentaries, live tours, all of her albums, and we are all here to go on this journey with you. ♥️ Watching the two of you watch and learn about Taylor brings me a lot of joy. Thank you. TTPD is definitely my favorite album, and a lot of Swifties favorite album as well. It is so poetically written, but with that said, all of her albums are stunning!! Love you guys. 💕

Ivy

TTPD is one of my favorite Taylor albums but I think you should have a few more albums and some context under your belt before you dig fully into it. I'm one who thinks everyone's Taylor journey should be different, based on their personalities and tastes. I don't think a chronological journey is the best choice for everyone, so I encourage you to hop around a bit. I'd love to see you start with Midnights Til Dawn edition, followed by Folklore Long Pond Sessions and maybe evermore too, since they're sister albums. I think you'd vibe with Midnights and I think you'd both really appreciate the lyricism and storytelling in Folklore/Evermore. The Long Pond Sessions is a full movie Taylor directed, and it's on Disney+. Since Folklore was written during the pandemic, this was the first time any of them had been together in the same room, and the first time they performed the album together. Taylor also talks with her co-producers about each song and what it means to her before they do it live - it's so special, and I honestly like it more than the studio version of the album. Also, I really think you should do Miss Americana soon, since you've watched the whole docuseries. It will just give you more insight as to who she is as a person and the journey she's been on since she was a tween. LOVE YOU GUYS!!! And Alanna, I still can't get over how pretty your hair is!!!!

Keely Lambert

TTPD is my favorite album. I became obsessed when showgirl was released so i worked backwards through her discography. I am so glad i did it that way as its definitely made me appreciate her earlier work. I agree with what others have said, whichever way you do it wil be personal to you. I am here for whatever you put out 🥰

Tiffany

Wondering if you guys are planning to go through and do random songs or go album by album. Just curious what to expect.

Freddieeee

Please react to her first documentary, Miss Americana on netflix! :)

CammyJ

I loved TTPD but listening to The life of a Showgirl, hearing her this happy is amazing. It's not has poetic has TTPD but great non the less.

Monica Torres

Taylor did NOT move to London to be with Joe. She went there in hiding to get to know him better in 2016 after a Kim k and Kanye situation. During their almost 7 years together they lived between London and New York both their homes back and forth. People really like to paint joe as a villain when his biggest crime was his mental health. It just bothers me that people attack Joe and his family because he wasn’t interested in the relationship being public and preferred the private life the two of them had chosen together. Or saying he was a cheater when we have actual proof Taylor was at the very LEAST having an emotional affair with matty healy a year and a half before they broke up (her own lyrics on ttpd tell us this). And I adore Taylor she my favorite artist and one of my favorite humans, but she is absolutely an unreliable narrate has admitted she embellishes in her writing.

Sarah Jackson

I don’t think Joe is a bad guy. But I do think he’s done some shady things in their relationship. Just listen to You’re Losing Me and tell me that that song came from someone in a healthy relationship. It is possible for BOTH parties to be “the problem”. Just because Taylor had issues in that relationship doesn’t automatically mean Joe did nothing wrong. I think that relationship and all the back and forth songs prove therapists right when they caution you not to make huge life choices in crisis or start/end relationships in crisis. Because as the “you” you are in crisis is not the “you” you are when healed/healing, Taylor wanted to hide and disappear when she got with Joe (she herself said so in Miss Americana). But we all know the real Taylor loves her fans and being Taylor Swift. She’s wanted this her entire life. Her music and career and connecting with her fans is integral to her. We as fans have known that since the very beginning (OG debut fan here). She was never going to be happy in such a restrictive relationship long term. As seen by how she is with Travis. Who is much like her, keeps things private that needs to be private but also lives outloud and embraces his fame. In the end, Joe and Taylor just weren’t compatible. And that’s okay. Not everyone is going to be, even if you love them.

Sarah Jackson

My personal recommendation (from having watched so many Taylor journeys lol) is: Red-Midnights-TTPD: These three albums really fit together and are of similar themes. Fearless-1989-Reputation-Life of a Showgirl: These albums are more on the upbeat side of her discography and also have almost a full circle type storyline. Speak Now-Lover: These two are just…lovey. In my mind they complement each other so well! Lastly: Debut-Folklore-Evermore: These three are more imagination driven, but still with threads of personal experience woven in. I’m sure there lots of who disagree but this is my opinion lol (idk what order I’d do each grouping in, though.)

Sarah Jackson

If I had to choose, I’d likely recommend doing it in this order: Group 2, 1, 4, 3.

Eileen O'Donnell

I'm so excited to hear your reaction to ttpd but i reccomend you start at the beginning if you're gonna do it all anyway.

Cocogigi

Love the Swiftie & the Scholar podcast! And we get another episode tomorrow 🫶🤘

Amos McShamus

So excited! Mad Woman is one of my favorites!!

Renee

Listening to this before hearing You’re Losing Me is cruel lol

Rene' Guerieri

sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days, how much sad did you think i had, how much tragedy? you said you loved me but where was the proof?? i got the idea that joe battled depression & expressed it by being cold and indifferent to her. he rarely came to her concerts & hid backstage when he did come & when in public he would insist they hide their faces and run into restaurants, etc hiding from the fans. we know Trav is the exact opposite, being all in for her, loving her 'out loud', celebrating her, making it to overseas tour dates even after having a big game the same day. anyway. maybe it's me reading into the sad lyrics because i had a relationship with a guy exactly like that & finally the depression & self involvement became too much, it was changing me as a person , i was dying as a person, i was catching the sadness & apathy. i left/RAN but i remember those 2 and a half years as the worst of my life. PS WE Love When Kyle sings Lyrics with us 🧡🧡

donald case

I'm so excited for the 6 hour TTP journey with Kyle. As an empathetic man who loves Taylor, brother is gonna make me weep.
