This one's the full story, not just the song. Taylor wrote "Better Man" during the Red sessions in 2012 — it didn't make the album, so she gave it to Little Big Town, her label-mate at Big Machine. They released it in 2016, and it won the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2018, with Taylor nominated as the song's writer for Best Country Song.
That same year, she sat down at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and performed it live — the same room where Scott Borchetta first heard her sing at 14 and signed her. Scott's right there in the audience next to her mom. It's one of the last times she played that room before her Big Machine contract ended and the masters fight began. Then in 2021, she reclaimed the song for good, recording it herself as a Vault track on Red (Taylor's Version).
We reacted to both — the Bluebird performance and the Taylor's Version Vault track — back to back. Cocogigi, thank you for this one. A song she wrote, gave away, watched win a Grammy in someone else's hands, then took back to where it all started. Hall of Fame baby, indeed.
