It seems fitting that episode 89 of Segaiden tackles Sega's most significant game release for ’89. I didn't plan it that way, mind you. The universe just loves me, if only in small, meaningless ways. Case in point: I woke up this morning to discover I'd won 20 bucks in the lottery. That doesn't change my life, but $20 is still [checks] a coffee and pastry at the airport when I head up to Long Island Retro Expo this weekend. (Come see me talk about games this weekend if you're in the area!)

I'm very happy with the Genesis episodes so far, and with the upcoming scripts I've already penned. I realize that putting nearly 90 episodes of retrospectives together to get to this point in Segaiden amounts to one hell of a shaggy dog story, buuuut seeing Genesis in this context better impresses on viewers (I hope!) the eye-popping impact the console had when it launched. It's easy to look back on the Genesis launch lineup and wave it off as a load of insubstantial fluff, which isn't wrong, but back in 1989? It was hard to believe you could see shit like this on your very own personal (or very own family) television. No coins, no tricks, just giant dudes turning even gianter and then becoming meteor-like were-warriors. Unbelievable stuff back then, seriously.

A wolf never flees in the face of its foe: Altered Beast | Segaiden 89

Another Altered Beast conversation? Yes, well, this is the one that counts. Wash away the unhappy aftertaste of the Master System conversion with a port that is even more technically impressive and doesn't come with any caveats. The Genesis version looks so good and plays so faithfully to the original arcade machine that Sega of America enshrined it as the U.S. pack-in for the system, effectively escalating it to Hang-On/Super Mario Bros./Tetris status. (Or Gyromite status if you want to be sassy, I guess.) Sure, Altered Beast isn't a particularly deep or thoughtful game, but as this episode gets into, that's kind of the point. It looks great, it plays well, it supports two players at once, it has the depth of a sidewalk puddle after an afternoon squall: the perfect pack-in. For some reason I now have a strong urge to go to that Long Island Expo solely to ask if that pastry and coffee were any good.

All this Altered Beast content and no mention of the Matthew Sweet album? Seriously though, great video. As a Nintendo fanboy back then, i only knew the game through short bursts in the arcade, so i thought it was such an amazing game. At least it looks cool.
