Can you believe that Sega launched Genesis (Mega Drive) in Japan with only two games? And that they were both Super Scaler conversions? Well, kinda-conversions. Space Harrier II is technically new. Kinda seems like putting a lot of eggs in one basket, especially when one of those eggs really serves to highlight how much less powerful this console was compared to its coin-op forebears. But what do I know, I'm just an old man on the internet who decidedly does not make some of the most beloved video games of all time.

The red sky tells its tale: Super Thunder Blade & Space Harrier II | Segaiden 90

The searing skies and surrealistic landscapes of the Fantasy Zone (but not OF Fantasy Zone, if you know what I mean) return on Genesis for its first original game, more or less. Sega's two launch titles for the Japanese Mega Drive showed up on day one for Genesis as well, demonstrating the company's commitment to making this console a true arcade-to-home experience. Unfortunately, as these games demonstrate—especially Super Thunder Blade—the best plans etc. etc. Nevertheless, they were technically impressive for their time, and Space Harrier II even managed to be good enough to be worth playing today. My gosh, Super Thunder Blade looks ROUGH. The Mega Drive already ended up being a third-placer in Japan, but can you imagine if it and the Super Famicom launched simultaneously with their respective day-one offerings? I can only imagine how much worse the lifetime sales there would have been.

As someone else mentioned, there's some pretty bad high frequency noise when you're on camera. Applying two Simple Notch Filters at 15.8 khz and 11.8 khz to the audio clip should clean them up if it ends up being a recurring issue. And wow, I remember being underwhelmed by Super Thunder Blade, but seeing it next to the arcade version is just sad.
