Is the Sega Genesis already dead?! No, silly, it's doing just fine here in August 1989. However, it does have a game based on Fist of the North Star now. Even if Sega was too miserly to change the name. They weren't fooling anyway, though, unlike with Black Belt.

There is some inconsistency online regarding Last Battle's release date, with some sources pegging it as an August launch title and others indicating it didn't ship until September. My solution is: not to be especially anxious about it. There was no gaming press tracking release dates at the time, no preorder system at game shops, no online release days, no day-one patches, no early adopter DLC. Did anyone here buy a Genesis on August 14, 1989? I'm guessing probably not! But if you did, I'd love to see the receipt you obsessively saved so that the world can see whether or not you bought Last Battle alongside it.

Match of the day: Last Blade & Tommy Lasorda Baseball | Segaiden 91

Mo' Genesis, mo' problems. Actually, the problem here is that these games NEED to be a bit mo' to really sell the idea of Sega Genesis as a meaningful upgrade. Aside from the superficial route map that dictates progression in Last Battle, neither of these games offer meaningful enhancements over similar 8-bit works that had come before—heck, Tommy Lasorda Baseball feels like a massive step DOWN from Baseball Stars on the humble NES. That isn't to say either game is bad or should be erased from history or anything, but I feel like Sega's marketing led us to expect a bit more than this, you know? I had a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and then enjoyed this proper video essay. Just one more warning that the pieces to camera segments have that high pitch noise like last weeks video had
