Here it is guys! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_6j7RDaL6E

It was worth taking the extra time to work out the tricky bits here. There are still ways the vid could improve – it could be more concise, for one thing – but pretty happy with this video overall. Let me know what you think!

It's online just for Patrons atm – will go public soon.

Thanks!

Finished. Absolutely excellent. Perfect tone, not negative but perfectly critical. You have forced me to Explain the Explanation when it comes out. I will include cursing, rape-shaming, illogical mapquesting, bromance, and that little psycho fucker that used to be Arya. Cheers again. I just had both hands in a toilet. On Purpose. Again.

'Critical, not negative'. I like that. Something to aim for. Thanks Oyster!

It's interesting; your videos bear rewatching more than the show does now. This one was excellent. 'Fire and fury' - you sneak those in very cleverly. Yeah, funny how Thoros has to be burnt but the nameless redshirt is left to be wighted. I wonder if Dany will realise the Valyrian Freehold had a limited form of democracy. Anyway, great stuff - loved it. Now get some sleep.

I agree with Paul. When your videos end I want to press replay immediately. It's been a while since the show made me feel like that. Also agree with "critical, not negative". Add to that "intelligent, insightful, thorough and visually beautiful". Wrapped in a voice that is a gift from the Gods, and tied up with a bow of underplayed humour. Classic Shift at it's very best. Loved it.

Biggie Smalls & Montgomery Burns helping Shift keep it real this week...great work! Your tone throughout this helped relay how much trouble you had with this episode. Really appreciate the extra time you put into it this week...Well done, Shift!

I'm hoping the Arya / Sansa plot turns out to be a ploy by the two to take down Littlefinger. I can forgive the condensed passage of time for the sake of moving the story forward, but I can't buy Arya forgetting everything she's mastered over the past few seasons and being thwarted by such an obvious scheme by a known schemer.

Shiera Seastar

Great video, I agree with Oyster, the tone was on point!

Alt Shift X

I'm hoping so too - but I really don't think it's the case. For Arya and Sansa to be playing Littlefinger, those multiple separate arguments they have would have to be entirely staged for the sake of a presumably eavesdropping Littlefinger? Which would help them... how? When Arya was stabbed last season, we all thought there was some complex plot at work. But there wasn't, Arya was just incompetent. This case is the same, I fear.

Great video. I might even go further to admit it's one of your best, along with the video about Cersei's death and Aegon's Conquest. Will we possibly get a new character study video now that GoT is wrapping up soon? Those are highly enjoyable. Once again, you manage to kill it when it comes to being "critical and not negative." Oyster nailed it. Thank you for that. Very much looking forward to next week's finale recap. Well done.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon of stealing Oyster's phrase "critical and not negative". This season would be easy to bash, but you have found praise for each episode without pandering or making excuses. You've taken on compressing a lot of information into a concise script with nearly flawless editing each week and nail it every time. I'll apologize for the rant ahead of time while simultaneously hoping you read it. Unfortunately the necessity of brevity creates contention. You seemed hesitant on how to best address the topic of sexual violence and that you knew there would be some backlash even if it was delicately worded. I am glad that you broached the topic because it is a huge part of the world of GoT and our own society. However, deciding to use the word rape for both Gendry's scene and Sansa's was a poor choice. There is a distinction between physical violence, sexual violence/assault, and rape. Gendry was a minor who had an adult figure make sexual advances on him. Gendry was physically restrained and injured even if only slightly, they did draw blood. This isn't rape but it is assault. I do think that the idea of "Oh it was fine because she was beautiful." and "Oh you are fine because you are alive." speaks to how men and violence are treated in this series and in real life. However in a book and show world with gratuitous sexual and physical violence, you have to tread delicately when drawing comparisons. The lines blur often. Theon was a minor who was horrendously tortured, but where was the outrage over him? He was brutalized mentally, physically, and sexually. Fans still don't feel sorry for him and make comments such as "he deserved it" because he is a villainous character. The prostitutes in Kings Landing that suffer at the hands of Joffrey are another example of sexual violence that gets brushed over. We have the scene of the two women where Joffery commands one to beat, if not beat and rape the other. We have another scene with a prostitute strung up and literally used for target practice by Joffrey. I don't see why Sansa's rape scene should be more offensive than these other characters. Is it because she is high born? Is it because she is a girl? Is it because she is young? These other characters share some of these same traits and yet none sparked the outrage that Sansa's rape scene did. There is a lot to be said about the way we as a culture react to these scenes on screen. I don't think the comparison of Gendry and Sansa was well done because of using the word rape to explain both scenarios when they had as much in common as they did in difference. Honestly, I don't expect that to compact neatly into a video as tightly scripted and fast paced as those you produce while still staying on topic for the video.

I don't think its a ploy between the two of them, Sansa's actions wouldn't make much sense in that case. I am hoping that it is a ploy on Arya's part, I think that is entirely possible. It would explain her behavior a bit more. I know that there were all those theories about Arya tricking the Waif last season but that all turned out just to be boring incompetence. Those theories were much more of a stretch to explain her behavior than the theory she is tricking Littlefinger. I don't think she's let Sansa in on her plan because she doesn't know if Sansa could act as well as she would want her to. Genuinely scaring Sansa prompts Littlefinger to take action, that she can take advantage of. I guess we'll see tonight. I'm hoping she's actually being intelligent this time, but I might just be too big of an Arya fan.

Alt Shift X

Thanks Gina! Yeah we'll do more character analysis videos in the off-season. Already started one on Rhaegar. And would be great to do some on Theon, Bran, Brienne, Jaime.. heaps of cool material to cover there.

Alt Shift X

Thanks Stephanie. Yeah the goal wasn't to address the entire issue of sexual violence in GOT – I only mentioned Gendry and Sansa because their scenes were both mentioned in that episode. And yeah maybe the word rape shouldn't have been used. I acknowledged the ambiguity of the situation by phrasing it as "what you might call a rape". But it wasn't the time or place to delve into the details – the goal was only to lay out some facts, note some similarities and differences, allow the viewer to make their own conclusions, and move on. I think that was more or less accomplished, but yeah something to build on in future.
