I saw The Mad King, the new Game of Thrones play!

Here is a "First Impressions" conversation about the play, with Glidus, In Deep Geek, and Hayden.

This was recorded immediately after watching the play. So it's a bit rambly and unstructured, and could probably use more editing. But I wanted to give you our immediate reactions ASAP. Once we've gathered our thoughts, we'll make more structured and comprehensive videos about the play.

Meanwhile, we're continuing to cover House of the Dragon Season 3. Our S3E07 and S3E08 livestreams will return to the usual time of 10:15pm Eastern Time Sunday.

It's possible that Dragon Time S3E07 might be delayed, due to our travels to see The Mad King. But Dragon Time will be posted here as soon as it's ready. (Dragon Time S3E06 now has visuals, ICYMI).

Thanks for your support! We couldn't have seen The Mad King without the generosity of our patrons.

For me the Howland vs Arthur thing is significantly better than in the show for one reason. Apparently in the play, Howland is playing dead, lying completely still before launching a surprise attack on Arthur. This mimics how crocodiles/alligators (the Reed sigil) attack their prey, remaining completely still before launching their attack at the right moment. So it's like GRRM having fun with heraldry which he likes to do.

I so hope we get a video release or a global run so more people get a chance to see this!!! The travel cost barrier is heartbreaking! But I was honestly so happy that you all got to see this, and I am so eager to hear more and more about your experience!!!

It’s interesting that Targaryen talks about the dragon needing 3 heads because of Aegon and his sisters but always forgets they had a whole other sibling with Orys

It’s hard to form an opinion of the play without seeing it firsthand. Hopefully it’ll come to NYC in a year or two. I kinda find the hyper-sexualization of Ashara a bit icky, to be honest. Dorne has always felt like a bit of a teenage boy’s fantasy land to me, and very out of place in an ostensibly medieval world. The whole point of women’s chastity is to ensure that everyone knows who the father of her children are, so the idea of a kingdom where everyone is sexually liberated is a bit silly. Plus. . . any woman who has actually had firsthand experience with Latin cultures can tell you how big a role machismo plays. The women may seem flirtatious from the outside, but it’s counteracted by a very controlling, sometimes violent masculinity. If the Dornish really did accurately reflect Latin culture, Arthur would have dragged Ashara out of King’s Landing the second she got pregnant and had her committed to a convent. Oh, well. It’s all fiction in the end. Glad you enjoyed the show!

40:50 Can't believe the Jon Snow rap was the real correct prediction about the central theme of ASoIaF all along. This is the life I chose!

When I first heard about the play and tried to get tickets, I found out really fast that there was a Stratford England and not just a Stratford Canada. Since I couldn't make the pilgrimage to England, I did the next best thing and subscribed so I can hear your take on it!
