This show does an amazing job of making you hate the main character while still understanding why he's doing the things that make you hate him, without making you hate him permanently.

I mean a lot of what influences the way Subaru sees Emilia is built on experiences this version never had. For instance, he states that the reason he's so dedicated to her is that she saved him, which while that was the first encounter he had with her, this version first met him at the house in the slums. Due to his affliction he's built up plenty of experiences with her but most of them don't persist. Worse even he can't even explain it without the curse groping his heart.

Too bad a lot of the royal candidate stuff was cut. Their near one-liner explanation of each camp was more of a proper presentation in the light novels, along with a back and forth debate for each candidate why they would work well as the next ruler. And we also missed Emilia and Roswaal's gambit, in which Puck basically threatened to freeze the capital in an instant if they couldn't manage to treat Emilia fairly. But I guess this was good enough with the time they had to give for it.

The anime did Julius so, so dirty here, leaving out an important conversation between him and Felix after his beating of Subaru that would have cleared everything up. Essentially the conversation was had Julius not beaten and humiliated Subaru, Felix would have had to do it and, turning off his kindness, would have been far more brutal than Julius. Because had neither Julius nor Felix done it, one of the other knights would have, and they would have killed him. THAT is how disrespectful Subaru was and THAT is how merciful Julius actually was in this beating. And I'm so glad Alicia understood without the extra context - because a lot of people didn't.

The anime's going to have to try real hard to fit this crazy information so late in the story, if they even plan to. Because they already did, in a chibi webseries that aired around the same time as season 3 iirc. As an anime only I would LIKE for WF to properly work this in but I kinda doubt it.

No, its fine as the WN, LN, and manga cover this right now. The anime does reveal but not in an actual episode. INSTEAD the anime reveals it in some chibi short. It's insane how the anime went about revealing this info. I think its best to just read this comment rather than go search for the chibi short.

Yeah this episode really shines how- In how the people who made the anime did not expect to get more than one season, they cut a lot of necessary scenes for explaining different characters. like entire bits of incredibly important characterization for Al and Julius in the LN go missing because "Well we didn't know if we'd get more seasons" and then they made the idiotic decision to explain it in a chibi shorts series that's entirely miss-able side content.

You can be all those things and not be this insufferable. Just about every other character in this story has flaws and are way more likable than he is. And not sure what you mean by he doesn't fall into a trope, he is a trope, he makes decisions based on the trope that he is a selfish simp, it's not that uncommon of a trope, it is just usually relegated to a side or minor character.

I think this is probably one of the best written scenes in anime. Like it is INSANELY cringey and has caused A LOT of people to drop the series right here, but it sets such a perfect tone for what the series is. All episode, Subaru was acting like this was HIS story. He has Main character Syndrome. Thats why he belts out all these cheesy speeches and thinks he can get away with insulting nobility and attacking people he doesn't know. And the story does amazing at presenting it from his perspective. Like Julius is set up as this pretty boy noble knight who is "flirting" with Emilia. In reality, he's just a dude who's performing his duties. Subaru still thinks he is a generic Isekai mc. No you aren't Kirito lil bro. You are a dorky teenager with no life, combat or magic skills and this is not an isekai where you get everything handed to you.

While it's easy to separate facts logically in your head that this isn't the same person you've been with all those times, it's much more difficult to do so with emotions. Unfortunately, we as humans don't get to choose how we feel, just what we do about and with those feelings. Being literally unable to express those feelings to anyone at all is how you spiral into suicidality, and even that is barred from this idiot. I might go on a tweaker power trip myself after a few rounds or so of literal death. That said, Subaru is a dumb idiot. But he's our dumb idiot. He's not the protag we need, but he's the one we deserve: a deeply flawed and fucked-up moron.

No he's right. The anime was supposed to make this reveal here but they didn't have time to even though they wanted to. They had another opportunity to reveal this in season 3 BUT they put it in a short spinoff special that isn't officially translated. You're SUPPOSED to have this information right here, it's not a spoiler. The only reason they didn't do it was because of time. She's not gonna watch that side special and if she doesn't learn here she may never learn this information.

Honestly I fully believe that everyone in the royal selection (with the exception of Julius because he is the GOAT) messed up big time but unfortunately Subaru is the only one who gets punished for it because... well he was the main attraction and also the only commoner. Like straight up we have racism, attempted murder, disrespect, blasphemy, potential murder, more disrespect, breaking into a royal palace, hypocrisy and iirc even more in the novel and this is all not including stuff Subaru did

I understand that Subaru has flaws and needs to develop as a person/character, and I understand that he did not respect Emilia’s wishes. But Felt has never had any intention in participating the selection, and only chose to do so to avoid her grandpa getting punished. If the show were to be framed differently, I wonder how many would put Reinhard’s actions into question.
