What I really like about Black Lagoon is how it’s able to take real world tragedies and make characters out of those to shine a light on them with some degree of seriousness, but balance it out by still framing it within an Action/Comedy perspective. Making people laugh at appropriate times, not making light of the event in question, making the antagonists and protagonists born from those events fleshed out characters with believable motivations. Exaggerating their physical abilities to just the right amount for the action scenes. Roberta and her connection to the people responsible for making the Colombian drug trade what it is. The Twins, Hansel and Gretel, being a critique on how the dictator of Romania handled the birthrate crisis and the awful orphanages spawned from it that did more harm than good from the practices that came from them and how they handled the children within them. Balalaika and her Hotel Moscow being an example of how the former Soviet Union countries treated soldiers after they came back from the Russian-Afganistan war/conflict. And finally how we get to the current arc dealing with the Yakuza and the different types of people within those organizations. How some joined because they were legit looking for a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie and seeing them as family with loyalty while others only see it as a way of getting money and power. Just like when a bunch of people, including me, talked about the Nazi’s vs German Soldiers debate in the Patreon vid of the reaction to the Submarine episode, there’s a bunch of long discussions like those that can be had about each of the other ones listed here with just the same amount of dialogue. Black Lagoon just has so much packed into it that revolves around real world history influencing the characters in the story. I really like how the mangaka includes those bits. Researching all the events in question gives a much deeper appreciation for the show in my opinion. Made me enjoy it all the more

A fun tidbit is that while the balalaika is a stringed instrument, it is also the nickname for the Dragunov rifle we see Balalaika use in the flashback, her skill with said rifle is how she earned her nickname (her birth name is actually Sofia) In the manga they mention that Balalaika was actually meant to represent USSR in the Olympics in 1984, but the USSR boycotted it making her join the paratroopers instead.

The thing is, Rock genuinely believes Yukio is a normal kid trying to live normally while having connections to the Yakuza. Had he known she was all about that life he wouldn't have been so desperate about helping her
