honestly im tired of people shitting on rock, the man does what he can where he can. Yes he has personal stake in yuki here but that doesnt mean hes wrong to try to help her not be murdered by balalaika or help her to try to live a normal life, accepting yukis choice here is letting her kill herself which i doubt many would feel comfortable not trying to talk someone out of and it certainly doesn't make rock a bad person for trying. I get hes not as fun to root for as people whos fully accepted the amoral world they live in but i get where hes coming from regardless, the man having easy to tear apart flaws if anything just makes him a good character.

Spacefrog

Everyone was going "Rock messed up now" and all I can think of is how Balalaika picked Rock up one handed like it was nothing and how hot that was

The Pope Mobile

The thing is he's doing it in half measures because he feels bad but at the end of the day he's there to help the people destroying the yakuza, only when someone who reminds him of himself is involved does he start to care and even then he doesn't really as Yuki points out. Who cares what choice he thinks she should have made, the choice by this point had already been made. Dice had been rolled, she's already a sacrificial lamb and the only reason it reached this point is because of the people he's directly working for and then he wants to moralize about the whole situation? He can't do shit about it, complaining about the flaws doesn't mean anything it's pointing at a situation you're partially involved in making worse and saying "wow this is fucked up!" It's no wonder she doesn't want to hear it. She knows it's archaic and dumb, she directly says she knows and that she's doing it to save further lives in the clan even if it doesn't work and he still keeps going. Rocks not a bad person he's just there translating for the russian mafia so they can make power plays. He's not a bad person he's just a pirate that works in a company that doesn't care about being covered in blood for a pay day. One foot in, one foot out. Doesn't mean you have to abandon your morals but please realize how dumb it sounds for you specifically to be moralizing this work when you could choose to be a salary man again at any time.

Doing nothing means he certainly isnt going to be able to do anything is the damn point, rock does his best in the messed up scenarios they end up in to do what good he can where he can. Also shitting on rock as part of the problem when hes here as a translator and once he realizes the scope trying to effect the outcome how he can isnt really fair. And i should point out its not really half in half out to no have an issue with balalaika destroying organized crime familys untill a teen girl tied to it by family is going to be killed just because. The yakuza is no more innocent as an organization then the triads or hotel moscow, hes taking an issue with people put in terrible circumstances here just like he was saddened by the twins circumstances but wasnt bothered by the deaths of the mercenaries. Hes protesting someone being made into the living dead infront if him. Rock often does what he can to avoid lagoon getting mixed up into more gruesome work and has to be convinced to not object to the more reprehensible stuff theyve delt in like smuggling garcia and even then you can see him thinking through all the angles if the situation. Lagoon largely deals in smuggling, fencing debt collecting and protection work. So while yes theyve very dark grey, its not like hes been incredibly wishy washy about how he feels and hes butted heads often about his moral stances.

I LOVE REVY'S OUTFIT!! God her outfit in this arc is just, *chefs kiss* the skirt, the boots, the long sleaves, idk why it makes her even better. maybe because its a mix of her hot personality and cute outfit that makes it the best.

The Pope Mobile

The point here though is that he's walking around this underworld without actually soaking in the consequences or grim realities of it. It isn't dark grey, they're smuggling guns and cargo for the same gangs and mafias and yakuza you're talking about that he has no problem with getting murdered who then use said cargo to create the conditions the twins were made in, Garcia was kidnapped in, this situation played out in etc. He comes to Japan with Hotel fucking Moscow and is shocked that things get out of hand and innocents get caught up in gang warfare? Is he a 5 year old? Of course not, he's a walking contradiction which is the point of this scene and what he learns in this arc and the next. It's the same with Balalaika's speech which boils down to get active and do something. Start scheming earlier don't sit "in the twilight" and only act/moralize when the realities of the world he's in become apparent because by then it's too late. He criticized Revy for not being Robin Hood as a contradiction in her world view while he himself can't see that same criticism applies to himself, if he is a good guy with morals they're selective and tragedy follows almost all his moral judgements outside of bringing Garcia and even that's arguable. That's why he flashbacks to that scene, he's still doing the same shit and failing to read/save people. Not gonna spoil it but it's a learning moment for him, not to abandon all his morals and just be this grimdark edgy murderer where anything goes but to take a much more active role in achieving the outcomes he wants.

Charlie baker

Pretty much only agree with the end point here that he makes a choice to more actively shape events rather then getting other people to do it for him. He does what he can where he can to try to do right by people who didnt have a choice in becoming the living dead. If he is? You saying rocks a bad person because he fails to save people or doesnt have the means to help everyone around him equally? He doesnt criticize revy for not being robin hoid, he suggests if robin hood doesnt exist then why not try to be robin hood. Its wild people are more willing to shit on someone for trying and failing to do good because of their own weakness then the people who actively do awful things because they can and want to while being strong. Even if his morals were super wishy washy atleast the man tries, i love revy but shes certainly not more commendable then rock for largely taking the moral low ground and murdering people just because in various situations.

Ivory Morningstar

The rock hate is sad when hes genuinely the best written character in the show but because hes not cool edgy like revy is hes always so overlooked. It feels like yall really over inflate his character flaws and just straight up ignore all of his character strengths

Zarathos Daimaoh

I dunno, it's not about being edgy ... and i get that they need some kind of "straight honest Everyday man" to balance it out and have a POV from someone not insane .... but at times his virtue signaling stances are just ridiculous ... kinda like X couch activists. He could have gone back to the normal boring life and grind, and chose to stay with basically criminals. He's selfish, needlessly judgemental and has a savior complex. He actually started well, as some kind of a wolf in sheep's clothing, that gradually shed off that skin and adapted. But then his evolution kinda stopped there. He takes absolutely no responsibility for his choices in his new way of life and continues to whine about it whilst moaning about how un-agreeable his previous life was. I don't hate him, but I kinda understand people expecting him to turn into Walter White by season 2 instead.

Ivory Morningstar

But thats exactly what I mean. everyone wants rock to be like this Walter white figure who gradually gets darker and more morally Grey as the series goes on like we haven't seen that character trope a million times. rocks flaws are what makes his character interesting of course hes not gonna just instantly adjust and be a ok with everything instantly even though this life was his choice that doesn't mean he needs to be a yes man to everything everyone does and again you're only overstating his character flaws while ignoring all of his strengths while rock isn't morally fit for his job he undoubtedly has the brains for it was HIS plan that saved everyone's lives in episode 1 he was the one who saved revy from getting shot by the nazis underwater he was able to easily deduce the rip off churches secret drug operation and expertly negotiated with their boss and he does more stuff in the manga everyone believes rock is stupid and naive for not throwing his morals away and not saying yes ma'am to everything revy does and its exhausting. If everyone had it theyre way rocks character would literally just be Benny.

Zarathos Daimaoh

Not really, there is a difference in him staying firm with his convictions , disagreeing at times - which is fine, you don't want a show full of Revy or worse - and being overly judgemental and sanctimonious , while still diving in. There is a tight rope and equilibrium to have there, when interacting with the group, and some viewers just don't feel he's there at all. At times he does feel like that person that does not practice what he preaches. And after all he's human and all of us got some dose of hypocrisy. But i can understand it rubbing people the wrong way, when does it that way with those timings. Also while i did not go deep into specifics, you're glossing the part when i said that he was adapting well at first , or again like i said that i understand the need for such a character. As for the Walter white, gradually grey character, you find it tropey and too common ? Well the naive idealistic whiny doe is an even more abused trope, especially in anime.

Mr I like spam

rock is great you guys are just haters

LittleMoist

"without the proper build up" Thats what this has been? He's constantly had his weakness thrown in his face and now hes facing it."

DaniDeFig

Hating on Rock is super valid! xD I do love that the show itself keeps calling him out on his BS, and punishing him for being an indecisive bitch. Is his overall character arc clearer when the arcs are actually in order? Yes. But I can't promise that you'd like him any better ^^' (why the Anime decided to play the arcs out of order I will never know. This 'Japan Trip' arc happens BEFORE the 'Counterfeit Girlie' arc, and is why Rock seems to have more balls there)
