I read this and Blue Box when i got into Manga about 10 months ago. I decided to stick with Blue Box and dropped this. Not because I didn’t enjoy it just because I found it repetitive, whereas Blue Box had decent variety. I say all this to differentiate and say that I liked these first 2 episodes more than I did reading those first couple of chapters. Hope it continues, the animation is god tier.

While the title The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity is a direct English translation of Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku, the play on words of the Japanese title is completely lost in the English translation. The first kanji in Kaoruko's name, 薫, is the same kanji used in the title (Kaoru/Fragrant), and the first character in Rintaro's name, 凛, is also the same kanji used in the title (Rin/Dignity). The play on words is effectively Kaoruko's flower blooms with Rintaro.

Props to you for not putting on the eye patch.🏴‍☠️🦜 But Netflix doing their usual lazy job subbing with no on screen text translation. CloverWorks hitting it again. Damn this looks good. I can tell I’m going to love this pairing. But, let me get this straight. All your life people have thought you were scary. So in order to improve your impression you dyed your hair, got piercings and dressed like a delinquent in Japan, where conformity is comfort. What could go wrong with that plan? Nice guy, but logic is not your strong suit. 😁 Don’t get me wrong. Really loving the series so far and will probably get the manga once the season is done. I enjoyed Haganai as well and Kodoka bothered me in the same way. Both characters are concerned with the same stereotyping, yet make choices to reinforce the negative stereotype. Another character with the same problem, Ryuji in Toradora by comparison, makes the choices and effort to appear less intimidating.

Kodaka's hair was natural though? It's the main thing he got from his mother, which is why he refuses to dye it from what I remember. For Rintaro, I feel like there's a story there? Like they bring up in this episode already that Rintaro keeps people at a distance even with the boys who aren't scared of him and actually know how he really is. He even keeps his cake shop a secret. So it definitely feels like he has walls up for some kind of reason beyond "people might find me scary". The hair and the piercings might have something to do with that.

I have read the Manga for this twice up to current chapters and it is hands down one of my all time favorites. It is wholesome to the max and I am soo excited to finally see it as an anime. True, but Kodaka could have worn his uniform normally, ditched the necklace, worn the tie and softened his language. The trope of poor logic is common enough that it even serves as the basis for the parody character of Katai in Komi. As this isn't a comedy I assume Rentaro is not meant to be a parody so I'll be interested to discover the logic that makes sense behind the decisions. Literarily speaking, the scenario goes a great length to quickly build Wagari's character as someone who looks beyond the surface. Overall it was a great first episode for a title I've been waiting for just from the hype.

Had to look it up: He's feared because he's very tall at 6'3 & has sanpaku eyes meaning The whites of his eyes are visible on three sides of the iris, which can be either cute or scary depending on the person. And saying how he's essentially a giant (compared to everyone else) looks like a thug with his hair (as blonde is not very common in Japan & tends to be linked with delinquency through dying or bleaching it, which Rintaro does) & his eyes, seeing him could be very scary.
