Ok

Now it’s time to binge all 6

TheNoobThatCould

Lots of people hate on the battle scenes for this movie but I think they're just not as good as they should be. Not terrible, just under expectation. Own opinion though ofc

The Silent One

Honestly? all of the fighting in Dale should've been cut. Have the troops (yes, troops, not a rag tag bunch of townsfolk) of Laketown fight with the dwarves and elves, like in the novel, while the rest remains at hte lake.

The Silent One

Man, I prefer Thorin, Kili and Fili's deaths in the novel... Long story short: THorin gets wounded leading the attack against Bolg's Bodyguard (yes, Bolg, Son of Azog, because Azog died in Moria by the hand of Dain Ironfoot. Bolg used the chance offered by the Great Goblin's death to uite the orc tribes of hte Misty Mountains for a campaign). Kili and Fili die trying to protect their wounded uncle (basically, that could've been the Boromir moment of these movies. You see the two fighting off insurmountable odds, slow mo etc. and then they get overwhelmed). And then... Beorn shows up. As an even more gigantic bear! He crashes through Bolg's guard, carries THorin to safety, then returns, pulls Bolg off of his warg and crushes him! Btw. in case you wonder how Dain even arrived so quickly: In the novels, Thorin asks Roäc, one of hte Ravens of Erebor, who can talk, to deliver a message. On receiving, Dain sets out with 500 Dwarves from the Ithril Luin, the Iron Hills, all veterans of the orc wars, armed with mattock, broadsword and shield. THe "Talking bird" thing is important in one other regard as well: The Thrush you see once or twice in the previous movies overhears Bilbo telling the dwarves about Smaug's weakspot, and then flies to Lake-Town and tells Bard, who is surprised htat he understands the thrush. He was able to do that, because he is the heir of Girion of Dale. He also doesn't kill Smaug with a ballista bolt fired from a broken bow... The Black arrow is a "Normal" arrow that is black (and probably forged in Erebor) and up until then had never failed him, and he had always managed to recover it, so: Special, but not, apparently, tailored to kill big beasties. And again, the arrow's flight was true. I honestly think that a lot of those decisions for changes were "soudned good in the moment" and then they never had the time to properly think it over because the shoot was chasing the deadline the whole time. Otherwise, to quote a song from the novel: Under the Mountain dark and tall The King has come unto his hall! His foe is dead, the Worm of Dread, And ever so his foes shall fall. The sword is sharp, the spear is long, The arrow swift, the Gate is strong; The heart is bold that looks on gold; The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong. [...] The mountain throne once more is freed! O! wandering folk, the summons heed! Come haste! Come haste! across the waste! The king of friend and kin has need. Now call we over mountains cold, 'Come back unto the caverns old'! Here at the Gates the king awaits, His hands are rich with gems and gold. The king is come unto his hall Under the Mountain dark and tall. The Worm of Dread is slain and dead, And ever so our foes shall fall!

Completely off topic but it’s 4am where I am, just ordered a grand slam from Denny’s and I open up Patreon to watch this video and the first thing she says is “A Grand Slam that Denny’s isn’t serving you” well Alicia, I beg to differ 🤣

Maximor

Wasn’t there like five pages left in the book for this movie. So a lot of this wasn’t in the book? That pale orc was not a thing in the book as far as I remember.

Jacob Funckes

Awesome to see you finishing The Hobbit trilogy, I think my favorite of the trilogy is Unexpected Journey. And on the whole comparison between the two trilogies while I do agree that The Hobbit movies ultimately aren't as good as the Lord of the Rings I still really like them, and think they are a little bit overhated.

MMDXXX

Yeah baby it's finale time!

TwojaStaraIFrytki .

Every time I see this battle I'm like "yep, someone here is a fan of Warhammer (fantasy)"

Latrios (Coen van Haaster)

There were no Orcs at all in the original story I think, only goblins. As for the other part, the 'battle' only takes up about two pages because there isn't much detail, Bilbo gets knocked out, missing everything that happens shortly after the eagles and Bjorn show up. If you want the most faithful adaptation, you're best off looking for the BBC radio play from the 60's, incidentally, that version of Bilbo is what Martin Freeman based his performance on c: It's also the only version of the story I've listened to in completion, so I've probably missed a few things that the radio play glossed over or didn't mention.

The Silent One

"Goblin" in LotR is just another term for "orc", in the fandom oftne used to "differenciate" the Misty Mountain orcs from Mordor etc. AZog is MENTIONED in the novel. He gets killed by Dain Ironfoot in the Battle of MOria. His killing of Thror, and defacing of his corpse, caused the War of Dwarves and Orcs, that lead to the battle. The big Orc antagonist of the Hobbit is his son BOLG, who uses the commotion after the Great Goblin's death to unify the tribes of the mountains and then lead them against Erebor, hoping to take it. And with Thorin and Dain there, also take his revenge for his father's death. Side note: Bolg's original design for hte movie was the bearded Orc that threw Gandalf's cage around... a much cooler look than the one they then went with.

TjAlien

From a film making standpoint, killing smaug at the start of a movie makes no sense. You don’t begin a movie with the death of the most hyped up villain who was the whole reason for the dwarves quest. That’s a climax, not an opener

Kampela

Fun facts: -Peter Jackson was late addition as Director, so late he had little to say about script. -Due to Peter Jackson being put as Director so late, there were no pre-planning of props, so unlike on The Lord of the Ring this movie series had huge rush to get things done. -Smaug is small for a dragon. -Largest dragon that ever was birthed into being by Morgoth. So large that when this dragon, Ancalagon the Black, fell its death caused 3 mountains to fall as well. This deed was done by Eagles and ancient hero using a flying sailship XD -All gold of Middle-Earth is cursed by Morgoth. -While Sauron put his soul onto One Ring, Morgoth placed his onto Arda (the planet). As long as Arda is, Morgoth cannot die. Morgoth is imprisoned in another realm. -Morgoth is terrifying being, however even he felt fear at Ungoliath, unknown being and mother of fel Spiders, Shelob being one of them. When Morgoth and Ungoliath made alliance to attack light of the world, Ungoliath devoured all light of land and after they fled from scene, Ungoliath turned her eyes on Morgoth and attempted to devour him as well. Morgoths screams of terror alarmed his Balrogs who rushed to save their master and drove Ungoliath away. Yes, Morgoth is scary enemy, but he is not the only one.

FlaschenJoe11

Would have been best for end of the second movie to be fair.

Seraphem

Also, said dragon slaying hero with a flying ship is Elrond's dad.

Seraphem

Not just the same thing, 'orc' (Or more technically 'orch') is just the Elvish word for 'goblin'. Out of universe, Tolkien used goblin in The Hobbit because when he was writing it he hadn't meant for it to be part of his Legendarium, and since this was a bedtime story he told his kids 'goblin' was just a term they'd be more likely to understand.

Kyutoko

Gate scene. #ThorIn #ThorOut Thranduil rocking up on a Moose is such a flex. The actor playing Dain, Billy Connoly, they used CGI to make his face younger. Kinda like they did with Carrie Fisher in Rogue One. Oh god "Because it was real." will never not make me cry. My boi, my bean.

Phantom Penance

“That girl got decked in the face!” He likes watching women get beat. CLIP IT CLIP IT CLIP IT CLIP IT 😂😂

Silver Blade

6:36 -the boat vhad massive amounts ofgold on it with weight - going at a steady speed. lets say for fun it was like 600 punds of gold - could've easily been more. that already is more force than he could have generated

The Silent One

the first two points are actually worse: The original director, Guillermo del Toro, had to quit the project after a ton of delays. PJ took over to safe the production from being cancelled. A good bit of pre-production work, designs etc. had already been spent on stuff for del Toro, but with PJ now taking the helm, he wanted the designs to fit with his vision, rather htan have the movie look like a weird mishmash of Del Toro and Jackson. Becaus eof that, he asked for more time, to have a similar pre-productio as LotR. but Warner Bros. was being a dick abou tit. Which comes up again and again. Tauriel Love story, which Evangeline Lilly didn't want, and PJ ensured her wouldn't be done? WB: "We want it!" PJ wanted to give all dwarves plot? WB: "NO! Thorin, Kili and Fili!" And more... PJ had a good bit to say about the script, but because of the limited amount of time they had, because WB didn't want to extent the deadline (whcih was one of the reasons for the 3 movie split, rather than 2, to have more time) they just weren't able to refine the script on that level. They basically had to take what they had and run with it, because they were chasing the deadline allt he way through. Regarding dragon size: 1) We don't know how Smaug compares to non-Ancalagon dragons. So we don't know how small he'd be compared to First Agea dragons 2) Ancalagon did not destroy 3 mountains. He detroyed the 3 peaks of Thangorodrim, the tallest mountain in middle earth.

5Tom51

Dragon. Tremors could be the next "worm" movie lol. also was decently surprised with the extended cut, remember absolutely hating it when i first watched it.

Scrubthulhu

She definitely doesn't remember Balin's tomb in Moria 😆

Skebaba

Sauron having hugeass bats makes sense, since he's the lord of werewolves & vampires (his herald back in the day was a vampire). It's not a matter of the axe head being finally out, you generally can't remove those things because you might just instantly die depending on how the pressure mechanics function from a hit like that. Bro was lucky he didn't insta RNG die when the axe head got yoink'd LMAO.

Richard

Long Live the King. it felt like such a tragedy that not only Thorin died, but his nephews too, because even though we beat Azog, he still effectively fulfilled his Vow to end the line of Durin, even if he didn’t live to see it, the bastard died knowing it was true. still a great movie and loved rewatching it with you guys. Catch you all in the next reaction, hoping for more Superman episodes and She-Ra.

RedRam-Ipsen

That's probably for the best... 🤣

2026-10-07 07:00 I really hope you watch the Rings of Power series. Even though a lot of people criticize it, I personally think it's really cool. The sets are beautiful, as is the music. I highly recommend watching it because it also adds a lot of lore to the universe. I think you'll like it.

QuibblesAndGitz

Its a good line, but at the same time because I tend to be a book purist, when he said "Because it was real" my instinctive thought is "No, she isnt real, and Legolas shouldn't be here!"

Faroth

The drums are coming... we cant get out...

The Silent One

it doesn't add to the lore, it bastardizes it. They didn't have the rights to any of the stuff they are trying to tell, and so we end up with a pathetic attempt at overpriced fanficition. ANd the show's Galadriel has nothing in common with the actual Galadriel.

The Silent One

He didn't. Dain, like Thorin, is a descendant of Nain II. Dain's Grandfather was Gror, brother to Thror. They both are descendants of the same line. Also, Kili and FIli had much better deaths in the novel, dying while defending their wounded uncle.

QuibblesAndGitz

I think the biggest point of hate is that its just too much.. LOTR was a Trilogy, so 3 extended edition movies makes sense, but The Hobbit is just a single book.. I think if it was a pair of movies like Dune part 1 and 2, it would have been fine, but 3 extended edition movies out of a 300 page book... The trilogy was, as Bilbo would say, "butter scrapped over too much bread."

The Silent One

Legolas being there is not an issue with the novel. THere is no reason for him to mention it in LotR, and there is no reason for the Hobbit to mention him by name. THere is "Purism" and there is "I will, out of principle, be against things that make sense!" With the same degree, we could complain about Thranduil being named THranduil instead of "Elf King" or similar. Now, arguing about how much Legolas was in the foreground in the story of Bilbo and the dwarves, that is a different topic.

The Silent One

THey had to split it into 3, becaus eotherwise WB wouldn't have given them the time to actualyl finisht he movies properly. WB were major dicks during this whole ordeal! Ia lso think that they oculd've ade 3 movies work... if they had had the time to really plan and rework and refine everything. As it is, it feels like they went with first or second drafts and twiddled with them somewhat at best, because they just didn't have the time.

Daniel Gonzalez

Seriously its just bad fanfic the audacity of them to be like its the story tolkien couldn't tell they know noone cares about their stories so they piggyback on something better and then try to writ e their own crap that is never as good sadly its still probably a step up from what Amazon did to the WoT

DYlan Pacheco

Please dont suggest stuff that bastardizes the original lore

Oh! That Robin

Let’s go kill a dragon and fight a quintet of armies!!!

RedRam-Ipsen

The Elves rarely truly fall in love and they only ever marry once With only one exception which was Finwë who married Indis after his first wife Míriel died.

Seraphem

The Galadriel stuff is just... so stupid. Making her some spunky, rebellious upstart challenging authority.... when she is literally older then the sun! Other then beings that are essentially angels/lesser gods like Sauron and the Wizards she is one of, if not the oldest being on Middle-Earth. The only named character I can think of who is still around that beats her is Cirdan.

Goobert

One thing i will say is that even if Thorin was going mad, he was not wrong for ditching the 'deal' he made with the people of Lake-town. They couldn't even get into the town without being smuggled in barrels, then having to crawl in through a toilet, they couldn't trade for weapons because they were hoarded by the Master, and after they got captured the only way to be set free was to bargain away their own property. Extremely unfair and shit 'deal' any way you look at it. The only thing the dwarves did wrong was not telling the people to evacuate the city right away just as a precaution, but granted they were unsure if Smaug was even alive since he had not been seen for 60 years

Richard

The direct line is dead, which is what Azog was after, as far as I’m aware, Dain is from a branch line of the family tree, while Thorin, Fili and Kili are all direct descendants of Durin’s line. So while Durin’s bloodline isn’t completely extinguished, it only survives in a branch line, which was Azog’s goal from the start. Still an excellent point though, thanks for the correction.

QuibblesAndGitz

I acknowledged the good line. I was not complaining, I was sharing my Personal thought on the scene. Also, Thranduil WAS the elf king at this time. He wasnt named in The Hobbit, but it is lore accurate that it is him.

The Dovalord

Wait, I could have sworn the scene between Gandalf and Thranduil at 2:01:19 was in the extended edition where he explains the ENTIRE REASON why he’s so obsessed with the Gems. Gandalf literally says “those gems were not all your wife left you, my friend. She left you a son. Tell me which would she have you cherish more?”. Istg, it wasn’t a deleted scene but not in the theatrical release either.

LordVed

ungoliant and shelob are also that old, and are neither Valar nor Maiar, but a valid point none the less. Galadriel fought alongside the sons of Faenor during the many wars to reclaim the stolen silmarils and is among the few remaining in middle earth to have seen Morgoth, Sauron's Master. Galadriel is no hero however, and shares in the sin of kinslaying, hence her refusal to return to the far lands without first redeeming herself. that's why the scene in LoTR where she is able to defy the corrupting force of the one ring is so important. It's her redemption. Shes also High Elven Royalty, as the granddaughter of the High Elves First King. which makes her very old indeed. I put all this here for those who didn't know, as you seem like someone who would know all this already.

The Silent One

Part of that is the issue of the movie changing things. In the novel, the barrels just travel down the river, Bilbo trying to stay onn top, then get collected, tied into a raft and steered Lake Town. Bard is a guard member. The Master of Lake Town wasn't fearing a revolution and wasn't hoarding any weapons...

The Silent One

Again: It is not! One of Dain's descendanty is Durin VII. The last Durin. Some sources have him as Dain's Grandson, son of his son, Thorin III. Stonehelm. It is not " a branch line". Durin's bloodline still exists. This whole thing with Azog was just... not thought through int he movie. LIke "he wants to destroy the bloodline!" balin claims... yet nothing really shows that in the thrid movie. He just "evil general, doing evil generla stuff".

The Silent One

As i just said: To be truly purist, Thranduil shouldn't be named. That is all i siad. He should be called "Elf King". It is NOT lore inaccurate to have Legolas be around for the events, just as it is not inaccurate to call the "Elf King" with his later establshed name "Thranduil". THe issue is how the character was used, not that it was there, for it is completely reasonable for Legolas to be involved.

YorHaDen VT

Thorin becoming obsessed with the mountain's gold was most likely inspired by the classic tale of Fafnir, a dwarf king who's love of gold and jewels made him mad. He would collect treasures from all around the land and guard it jealously. Eventually, that madness turned into a curse, and that curse turned him into a dragon.

Sawnderz

If this had been two movies, as was apparently the OG plan, Smaug's attack on Laketown would probably have closed the second act. That'd be one way not to make it look like the coolest thing is already done, 5 minutes in.

Sawnderz

If they had time to refine things though, they'd have probably refined it into two movies.

Sawnderz

I remember first seeing this, and every time something was achieved in the battle, like a big orc was killed, I relaxed thinking it was almost over, then "Oh right. We still got one or two sub-bosses left. Fuuuuuck."

Atomkaktus

I don't know... An entire city of tough dwarves couldn't defeat that dragon, but a single fisherman could? All Warhammer dwarves would be ashamed. Just how Smaug was hyped before, his death was a bit of a disappointment.

Goobert

Idk, i don't find that an 'issue' really. The story is just different

Goobert

It was in fact a deleted scene

YorHaDen VT

I've listened to the ending song so many times. "The Last Goodbye", sang by Billy Boyd, aka Pippin from LOTR. It's beautiful, it's emotional, and it's a last window showing how Bilbo felt about this entire adventure. Tolkien did a fantastic job writing these stories, and Peter Jackson brought them to life in an absolutely perfect way. Middle-Earth is one of the most influential fictional worlds ever created, and it's very easy to see why.

Graham Wilson

the dwarf on the pig that you liked the voice of is Billy Connolly, a very famous Scottish comedian. In my opinion he is one of, if not the greatest comedians ever.

The Dovalord

K, that makes me even more mad now because the setup was PERFECT WHYYYYYYY

LordVed

I'll do you one better. a cube of gold measuring 1 cubic meter (40 inch cube approx., ways around 20 tonnes.... that's 2 African elephants in weight... inertia fr fr

RylerRay

Worm Movies??? Have you heard of a little movie called Tremors?

Le Karibou

Just for the lore detail, since I feel like it gives a lot of necessary context for the actions of Thranduil (the elf king) : The White Gems of Lasgalen (let me specify that these gems are only present as an element in the movies, it's some different stuff in the book) were something that Thranduil commissioned the dwarves of Erebor to make for his wife, the mother of Legolas. He never got them because of a conflict with the dwarves over compensation for the services. Sadly, his wife died, killed by orcs afterwards. So basically, Thranduil came with his army to Erebor to get the last present he never got to give to his murdered wife. When you also remember that elves (at least in the LOTR setting) are known to only ever really fall in love once in their entire (functionally immortal) life, you can kinda get why the man could be pissed about the whole thing.

Sneaky_Arachnid

I think its important remember that 'The Hobbit' was originally a 300 page childrens book fron 1937. Small people achieving big things other people couldnt is a big theme in the Hobbit.

The Silent One

That "fisherman" in the novel was a member of the town guard, and he IS the heir of Girion of Dale. Sum up of the situation int he novel: Laketown is being evacuated, and in the burning city a single company of archers are holding their position. Bard is their leader, a rather grim, and dour, fellow. Already his companions are leaving as well, and he is down to his last arrow... The black arrow, passed down to him by his father, who had it from his ancestors, from the forges of Erebor. A normal sized arrow. Every time he had used it, it had hit true, and he had been able to recover it. As he was readying himself to loosen this arrow, an old thrush landet on his shoulder. A thrusth we saw before, sitting next to Bilbo and the Dwarves, while Bilbo told them about Smaug's weakspot. The thrush tells Bard about the weakspot, and he is surprised that he can understand it. Because he is from the race of Dale. And then, he sends the arrow right into Smaug's weakspot.

The Silent One

Come on, if you mention it, you should also say were the whole "white gems of Lasgalen" drew their inspiration from: The Nauglamir, and the Conflict between Thingol of Doriath and the Dwarves of Nogrod. With Thranduil, I honestly kinda think they drew from Celebrian, Elrond's wife, and daughter of Galadriel, mother to Elladan, Elrohir and Arwen, who was captured, tortured, rescued and then sailed west. Just upped a little to make the whole thing easier to understand (if you don't know the context, "sailed West" doesn't mean much), and transplanted on a different character.

Emperor Kane

The worst part about the Hobbits auctioning off all his shit, in the books he had to Buy all that back with his share of the treasure.

Atomkaktus

ok, that explains a lot more, thanks for taking the time to tell me about it, thanks

Vegvisir92

Bofur (floppy hat dwarf) was always my favourite dwarf in the company, he's just a genuinely sweet and caring person, he stopped Blibo to talk in the goblin cave...now he knows Bilbo wants to leave and is willing to turn a blind eye to let him leave, Bofur is just such a good person in every way

Vegvisir92

Dain (pig riding dwarf) was CGI due to the actor, Billy Connolly having Parkinson's disease, he couldn't physically play Dain

Vegvisir92

should also note he has Parkinson's disease, thats why he was CGI'd into the movie

Vegvisir92

no offense but maybe learn a little about the lore before complaining

MetalHead 2241

I still remember telling my parents one weekend I wanted to watch the whole hobbit trilogy at once and watched it with a couple bags of chips and two bottles of soda.

Rosinante

1:23:45 me: "RAM RANCH?! Oh she said ramp"

Shawn Bateman

You got to watch tremors for some more worm movies

JosephBob

I said that in the discord, love those movies at least the first 4 with 1&2 being my favorite. If I had the money I'd pay for it to be on her list.

Aliulo

Thorin rolling off Azog like "Was that as good for you as it was for me?"

Lance Ivy

20:00 she has to go to the undying lads only elves and wizards and 3 lucky hibbits get to there

Mechkami44

I love the fact that Galadriel basically spat in Sauron's face and ego reminding him he's just a lowly lacky. "Your master was the real threat, you aint shit!"

Kawaii Edgelord

Ah yes the battle of the five armies! On one side we have Men, Elfs, and Dwarfs; and on the other Orcs and... More Orcs!

Lance Ivy

so fun fact another reason why it looks like a video game is it was filmed in 48 fps

Robert C. Dona

Fun fact! The flag that was blown away by the wind was not planned! But Peter Jackson thought it fit the scene so much that he decided to use it for the movie!

Lance Ivy

now you know why he dint fuck with the other hobbits on hius birthday in lotr

kingdedede bobo

if this was based on norse mythology then Thorin would be literally turning into a dragon doing this

Jackson Bertoncino

Same! It will also clear up some misconceptions about the lore that stem from these films. Such as the idea that orcs are spawned from the ground and lack reproductive organs. Nope! They reproduce the old-fashioned way lol.

Jackson Bertoncino

This was so much fun! I know these films may not have been super well-received by the fans, but I still really enjoy them. I hope you will watch The Rings of Power next. It takes place in the 2nd age ( The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films are in the 3rd age) and explores the creation of the rings of power and Sauron's rise. Some fans will tell you it's bad, but a lot of people said the same about the Hobbit films! So you should definitely judge it for yourself! Thanks for the great reaction, Alicia!

GaimeGuy

It's' also probably inspired by Beowulf, where Grendel's mother has a weakness to a specific sword, and the dragon has a weakness in a specific location (its belly).

GaimeGuy

Except part of the treasure hoard of smaug was ransacked from the city of Dale. It was a bustling city of commerce and trade that was also the primary source of food for the dwarves of Erebor. The treasure may have been mined by the dwarves but they traded it to Men for foodstuffs and other supplies. So no, Thorin was not right to ditch the deal and deny laketown their share. It was rightfully theirs in the first place

Kyutoko

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned it before, but it was Morgoth's power of magical corruption that created Dragons from other creatures and how he cursed all the gold on Middle-Earth. It's why Dragons are drawn to the gold and why it drives some people mad with Dragon-Sickness. And... what if I told you that Smaug is the smallest of the Dragons, at least the ones we know of? During the scene where they reveal Gandalf's ring and focus the camera on Galadriel's, though they never do this for him, after the battle you can see Elrond's ring. Speaking of the battle, Galadriel and Elrond can fight the Nazgul because they are ring-bearers, Saruman is a wizard. If they were regular folk, it would have ended differently. Love Galadriel using the Light of Earendil to push Sauron away. Oh, and if the context clues aren't enough, Gandalf and Galadriel had a thing many MANY years ago.

Kyutoko

Dain's CGI appearance is because they de-aged him for this movie, the actor is up there in age. He's also the voice actor for King Fergus from Brave. Did you notice when the pool of gold engulfs Thorin that it took the shape of the One Ring for a moment?

Kyutoko

It's anecdotal, third party information, but Tolkien CONFIRMED there ARE female Orcs. He wrote a letter in 1963 saying such. I believe, irrc, it was auctioned off at Sotheby's in 2004. The gist of it is that Orc women DO exist, but Sauron and Saruman both didn't think females would make good soldiers. And since there is no love in Orc society, I speculate this means... the women are just baby factories.
