FUCK YEAH LET'S GOOOOO HOLY SHIT I LITERALLY SCREAMED SEEING THIS!!!!!!!!!1 KOG IS SO BLOODY PEAK!!!!!!!!! OWL

Silver Screen

I hope you enjoy it. Personally, too much of this show's bts gives me the ick and red flags, so I'mma just pass on it. Still, you watch it, and I hope it's for you.

Noah Benner

Like ick as in the gore or ick for something else

Silver Screen

Behind the scenes stuff. Didn't like Dana Terrace as the showrunner on her last project, It's got that one VA I'm not gonna mention, and I heard it's a stab at Disney for their bullshit, which is just... Too many things I don't wanna be aware of when watching.

Nate Zabinski

Was waiting for your reaction the most (owl)

Wil DeYoung

Regarding Franky, Dana Terace used 'her' when referring to them on Twitter. Do with that what you will.

Egregore

Can you elaborate a bit? All I know is that Dana Terrace made Owl House, got majorly screwed over by Disney (probably for not being “family oriented”), and is now making this cyberpunk-esque indie show where the main villain is basically super-Disney.

Egregore

I’m like 80% sure Frankie is just a butch lesbian. Could also be nonbinary i dunno.

Silver Screen

I will be honest. Owl House wasn't for me. I do like the general plot, characters and LOVE the animation. But the writing wasn't for me. It was super aware of its target audience, and I don't mean kids. I mean quirky Tumblrettes. What little I saw of it lacked subtlety to an extreme meassure, where I felt it didn't trust its audience to really understand it without spelling it out. But for Dana specifically, I know that some aspects she fought particularly hard to include... Just were full on cringe to me. Luz and Amity are cute together, but the ship insists on itself to where it's just rubbed in my face. So a show where she has EVEN MORE creative control. Yeah, I'mma pass for now.

WhopsInc.

It's not the same bot they fixed the finger of, Frankie said she didn't know the model and the Gwen bots share memories. It's most likely the bot from the flashback at the beginning since they say she looks old.

Olympus Games

"I love the cat" -said the Rat Queen, unaware of the dangers lurking nearby

Sam Marsh

Frankie has a history of dealing with hallucinations, and I have a theory that Frankie and Andi have very different recollections of how the crane game incident went down.

Malcorpse

There is definitely some type of Munchausen syndrome by proxy with the little girl/old lady and the original(?) Guinevere, always needing to fix whatever is wrong with her but also the causes of the damage or needing to hurt her to fix her. Frankie fixing the finger was probably the first time she was fixed without suffering.

Sam Marsh

This pilot was amazing, you can tell that Dana, John and Zach were really “inspired” by their time at Disney to create this scathing examination of the exploitative nature of the entertainment industry. Also, I absolutely love Frankie, she is best girl, and much like Luz from the Owl House, I’m like 98% sure she’s on the spectrum.

Sam Marsh

One of my favourite jabs at Disney is during the opening montage, where a computer screen has an online article about the announcement of a Guinevere live action remake being green lit, with someone being quoted to say “nobody asked for it, so we’re making it!”

Egregore

You’re kinda throwing me through a loop here. So the reason you aren’t gonna watch Knights of Guinevere is because you think Dana Terrance’s writing is too unsubtle and cringey for her to be trusted with full creative control; and the reason you think Dana Terrance’s writing is too unsubtle and cringey is because you think that The Owl House, a show you saw “little” of, is unsubtle and cringey; But the reason you think that the Owl House is unsubtle and cringey is because you believe that Dana Terrance, a show runner who wasn’t given the time or freedom to properly run her show, is responsible for a lot of cringey and unsubtle writing choices in the show you watched “little” of?

Egregore

So where does the behind the scenes stuff come into play? The way you were talking about it made it seem like she’s working with a sex pest or something.

WhopsInc.

Still the bot from the tower for... obvious narrative reasons

Silver Screen

I watched two episodes and plenty of clips. And yes, the quirky Tumblr level writing threw me off hard. And I said that I didn't like the things Dana specifically fought to get included. That's all I said. All I am meaning to say is that I doubt I would enjoy this show, based on the previous projects of the people working on it. That is it. Please do not have a problem with that.

Silver Screen

What? Behind the scenes is everything from the people working on it, to controversies, to outside factors like the disney allegories. You are blowi g what I said way out of proportion. I don't need to defend my position on this. I don't wanna watch the show. That's it.

phasul

I kind of want to like the show but the artstyle isn't that good.

Olympus Games

>"I know that some aspects she fought particularly hard to include... Just were full on cringe to me" I found it curious the lack of specification and hesitance you used here because you were very specific in the rest of your comment, so I looked up what controversial thing she wanted to include and it was just keeping the diversity in the show and putting actual bisexual kids in the main cast because Luz and Amity were, yknow, bisexual. >"Luz and Amity are cute together, but the ship insists on itself to where it's just rubbed in my face." Those two are canonically dating. A couple loving each other, not a "ship insisting on itself". Can you elaborate on what you meant? Because it really sounds like you were unreasonably annoyed that you had to watch a couple of bisexual teens in love having screentime when they were spending their time together.

Bologna Amputation

I think the "Franklin" thing is just a nickname, given -lin is a pretty cute diminutive. That said, I don't have enough information, so I err on the side of consideration.

Egregore

You don’t have to defend anything; but when you say stuff like “this show’s bts gives me the ick and red flags” and “it’s got that one VA I’m not gonna mention” it sounds like you’re alluding to some kinda serious controversy, not stating your own personal opinion.

Chaxinitus

Welp, missed *that* when I watched this yesterday, there's a QR code next to the boss when Frankie's working on the boat and the net gets snagged Good to know this seems to be continuing the Gravity Falls/Owl House* tradition of having shit to keep an eye out for (*was Amphibia also in that same vein? I know it shares a lot of atmosphere/creative minds, but I haven't seen that one yet)

Pheonix

Fun fact, in the claw machine you can see dolls of Pomni, Melancholy (Mel), N and Uzi. Nice little Easter egg.

Narluga

damn can't believe my girl Adni got Arthur morgan'd. R.I.P.

Void

To you. As an artist myself this style is great for animation and looks beautiful as well.

largo778 .

BTW: there is a URL in the "blog" near the beginning. I highly recommend finding it and following it, Dana is an evil genius!

Silver Screen

They have her friends run around with pride flags when she introsuces her girlfriend to her mom. Like I said, I like them when it's just the two of them interacting. But the ship is insisting on itself. It's not a natural romance in any other scene. It's a big sign that reads "here is representation". I already said the couple itself is cute. I havd no quarrel with Luz and Amity themselves. It's tge same Tumblr level writing I was talking about. Like the show isn't confident in itself to actually make people like this pair, so they have to have the in world people praise and celebrate it as well. The show feels the need to spell out and show the conclusion the watchers are supposed to come to.

Silver Screen

Well, ProZD, one of the VAs actually WAS in a controversy, because he first complained that white VAs were taking minority voice acting roles, but then he got upset when, shocker, he was only given Asian roles to audition. Dude is a hypocrite who thought he could grift himself more roles and didn't like his own principles applied to himself I didn't WANT to go as in depth here and bum people out. But you wanted me to clarify all of it, just because I can't form my opinion about thinking I wouldn't like a show.

Leticia

Dude I don't think I ever loved a show so fast

Leticia

I can't even imagine how you can't see it as beautiful, like, genuinely

Twisted Fictions

I ship it. Which of them do I ship out of the three? *Yes*

Gildarts1#fan

that scream totally scared me lol

WillGlacier

Wait a min . . . I recognize that "papa" . . . YUI FROM SAO ABRIDGED?!

Pim Pomerson

To each there tastes but for me Digital Circus artstyle is a stop, i've heard it's good but nah

StorytellerDave

You can really feel the two sides of Dana struggling against each other through the two main characters. One half recognizing how awful Disney is and that she worked for a company that's horrible, but also she was just another cog in the content machine. The other half meanwhile says that yeah making The Owl House gave plenty of people a magical moment to remember that is cool and it meant something. The dichotomy of doing good while working for someone or something evil.

StorytellerDave

Two episodes really screwed you there. It was EP4 that sold me on the show, it included themes that just really resonated with me given my mother dealt with uncurable illness ever since I was a kid, she had so much to manage and had gone through so many different kinds of medication some of which did okay some which were horrible, I wish I had this show when I was kid tbh. That said if you look at the show overall, season 1 especially prior to ep 15 is kind of a mixed bag, with some really good episodes and some mediocre/bad episodes. Season 2 is banger after banger tho. As for ProZD, I think you misunderstood his point (a common misunderstanding, half the interned didn't get it). He wasn't complaining about only being given Asian roles, he was complaining about being giving an Asian role he was not a good fit for, just because he's Asian. Basically - wrong Asian country, he doesn't have the accent required and he recognized that there is bias in casting, where he got a privilege and a role that he did not feel like he deserved. Which aligns with what he said before, just expanding it further. I think you kinda vice-versa'd what happened there, just like a lot of people on the internet did. PS: "The show feels the need to spell out and show the conclusion the watchers are supposed to come to. " - How would you know if you never watched past episode two and just random clips? "Like the show isn't confident in itself to actually make people like this pair" - Again, how would you know if you didn't watch the show? Amity starts out as an antagonist and the show takes its sweet time getting Luz and Amity to even be friends let alone anything more. I don't think this holds up, people loved this pair since ep5 and they were still antagonistic for the most part at that point. It's not until ep 7 that they really bury the hatchet, they're actual friends in ep12 and then ep 15 is where you get the first confirmation that Amity actually likes Luz, meanwhile you don't get any confirmation from Luz feeling the same way until Season 2. If anything they took their time to make sure people will like the pair. "They have her friends run around with pride flags when she introsuces her girlfriend to her mom. " - Again, not watching the show really screwed you here, because that's a quick scene from an opening montage for Season 3, and it's not her introducing her girlfriend, it's her coming out to her mom. Obviously her friends would be supportive. Coming out to parents is a big deal for plenty of bi and gay people, for some it literally ruins their relationship. Obviously Luz's mom is cool and accepting, but it's still a big deal especially for viewers who may not get that treatment from their parents and friends.

random gamer

not u defending prozd cringe as fuck

StorytellerDave

@Random Gamer - I'm not defending ProZD because there's nothing to defend. He literally did nothing wrong, it's just usual internet people trying to find something to be mad at lol. I feel like people never actually read what he said, just what other people have said that he said. It's like when people got mad at Brie Larson for saying that not all movies are aimed at an adult male demographic - she was talking about a magical princess movie - and somehow that got twisted into her hating all men. It's just the online grift machine, people need to chill and actually read what people say instead of buying their opinions from grift-mills and angry checkmarks on Twitter.

Silver Screen

Okay, cool. Might give it another shot, see if Ep4 does sell me on the rest. Zhanks for letting me know. And tbph, I just do not care for the lgbt themes. Never could. But I do like a good romance. I do recognize that it gave rep to certain people, bit it just doesn't resonate with me past the actual chemistry of Luz and Amity

StorytellerDave

@Pim It was a stop for me too at first, but I gave it a chance and tbh I got used to it. It's like when you play a hyper-realistic modern game and then play an old classic game and you have a bit of dissonance. It disappears after a bit of time. Some people had the same reaction to Into the Spiderverse.

StorytellerDave

3:23 - Gosh this is such a clever shot, they used the hands to hide that actually Guinevere has her guts ripped open in at this moment. You wouldn't even bat an eye if you only watch this scene once.

Alicia Barkley

Most people who loved what Disney was when we were kids feel this way. Growing up Disney gave us something special and made important strides in tech and art. But the mask slowly started to slip and eventually it became clear that they don't care about anything but money and owning everything. Not to mention while Disney himself was a visionary and artistic genius he was also a racist and antisemitic.

TheNoobThatCould

Top tier thumbnail: Alicia looking somewhat stern and the subtitles reading "but also, fuck you"

StorytellerDave

They've always treated their workers like dirt too, but when you're young you don't really know about those details.

Julio Castillo

Fun Fact that'll blow your minds..... Sparky, Frankie's Boss.... and the nurse in a mascot costume talking to Old Olivia.... have the same Voice Actress... Kayleigh McKee Also.... talking of Olivia.... i really wanna know more about her, even tho it's clear as day she'll be the primary antagonist... i bet all my money she's not just a "Psycho Bitch", and also.... i bet that Guinevere herself was modeled after (what i assume) is her late mother.

Bologna Amputation

Goddamn, Kayleigh can really draw on that vocal gravel!

dragon emperor ry

The owl house walked so knights of Guinevere could run

While I'm not writing off the idea that this show will possibly have a trans character, I feel like the people jumping to Frankie as one are perpetuating the idea that if a female character isn't a certain way they must be trans, any tomboy. Frankie is a neutral name that many female characters has had, Fosters Home on CN for example. (Edit) The shows creator confirmed that Frankie is Cis and now some people are calling her transphobic, somehow.

aliciaxlife

I don't think its a jump tbh. I've had friends who are trans that switch to gender neutral names from their dead name to make it easier and comfy when identifying themselves. So I think some people are just seeing it as that. :) I think a lot of people are just trying to be respectful of pronouns and the character so checking to see if they are trans is imporant to the community.

Goobert

Sorry but thats literally confirming it is a jump, 'some people are just seeing it as that' meaning they're equating it to something they've seen and/or heard of instead of the show actually confirming it in any capacity. I gotta agree with the op, its a bit of a jump, its the classic 'you aren't conventional so you GOTTA be trans' schtick that gets a bit annoying, people aren't one or the other. Edit: Yup, case in point, its funny how its always the mfs preaching acceptance and diversity that turn hateful first when a their perception turns out wrong

Goobert

I don't wanna derail this conversation, and i definitely don't wanna get into the nitty of hollywood controversies, but it is immensily hilarious to compare ProZDs controversy (which i don't think you even got the full scope of) to Brie Larson when she 100% deserved the hate she got considering how absolutely insuferable she is, the hate for her didn't come from some random offhand comment, it came from dozens of interviews where it was obvious she was a preachy and annoying person who not even the cast of the movies she worked on meshed well with.

DLCDallas

I did not expect you to respond to me directly, I can see it from your point of view but it's a trend I've seen where if a female character is slightly tomboyish the community immediately jumps to them being trans. Love your content, wish you well.

EthanEverhart

I only just now noticed 20:02 Frankie pulls Andrea back because she knows she was about to catch the wrong end of the baton
