So what happened between Greg and Amethyst was probably like: She says; “I had someone there for me until she started spending time with you.” She was very close to Rose (probably a parental or older sibling type bond). When Rose was ‘gone’ she and Greg spent time as a way to deal with their shared grief, but they stopped doing it after a while cause Greg grew uncomfortable with just how possessive Amethyst was becoming about it.

Pretty sure that what Amethyst meant was that Rose was always there for her before she started hanging out with Greg. There was some resentment there before Steven was born, but after, they started watching those Lil Butler tapes and hanging out until they one day stopped. The fact Greg said "again" seems to imply Amethyst changed into Rose before and that led to...something not 100% sure what, but it was enough for them to stop being friends so a major line was definitely crossed.

It might have been a relationship between Greg and Amethyst, but you have a good point it might be more of a her needing a parent. You have to remember Amethyst is a kind of black sheep to the crystal gems. She explained previously that she is a new comer to the team. So like an orphan kid she certainly wants attention that she never got before. A lot of people hate her after this episode since she really did cross a big line.

I think they can be best friends but she has something like daddy issue but in gem way that makes it akward with greg, rose is the mother and greg like a step father with amethyst being the kid who was always wants the mom attention and gets it untill greg came into the picture but thats just how i see it

Sometimes with SU the showrunners hint, confirm, or deny things— regarding this episode from what I can find, Matt Burnett said Amethyst “was upset when Rose left and lashed out by messing with Greg”, but IMO it’s left somewhat ambiguous the extent to which “messing with” means, ie. whether it was just the shapeshifting to lash out AT him or whether they might have found comfort in ‘messing around’ before she did that sort of thing against him (shapeshifting) to sour it. You can find the quote and context and judge for yourself; some have characterized it as an unambiguous denial but I’m honestly not sure, and the complexity of this episode as context is pretty rich.

The timeline between Greg, Amethyst and Rose: Amethyst is upset at Greg, because Rose started to hang out with Greg when they met. Amethyst has been hundreds of years with the Crystal Gems, meanwhile Greg is in his 40'ish. So, Rose stopped being always with the Gems, and hanged out with Greg, and Amethyst felt left aside. Also, they heavily implied that Amethyst and Greg had a somewhat relationship when Rose did the thing. "I've seen your junk before" can be read in a pretty sexual way, and it's clearly not the first time Amethyst has morphed into Rose for Greg. That way, Greg had a Rose substitute, and Amethyst didn't feel alone... in a fucked up cope relationship.

Amethysts reaction felt way different from what most people are saying to me. I got the impression she was hanging around with Greg long before Rose did, but just as a friend. She's very directly shown to be human culture influenced and genuinely likes human friends. She probably has had many over the years. She wasn't aware of what romantic love was, cause that's what gems are. Then Rose threw a wrench into the situation when she did have romantic feelings with Greg causing both to drop her. Timeline wise it was some time later after Steven was born that Amethyst sort of hooked up with Greg as rebound, and then it leads to this. At least that was my read on it.

Honestly, if at some point Greg wants to move on, he should. As it stands right now, Rose might technically not be dead, but she's gone. Never going to return. If he finds someone he genuinely likes, he should run with it.

The showrunners imply that Amethyst was very attached to Rose, but when Rose started dating Greg, Amethyst felt abandoned. Once Rose was gone, they say Amethyst and Greg messed around with each other. It's left purposefully vague what that means, people either treat it as a purely platonic thing, or that the two of them had a sort of situationship, both of which ended because Amethyst got too toxic for Greg to handle.

I think Amethyst meant when Greg came around, Rose stopped hanging out with her and started hanging out with him more, so at first she was jealous of Greg but they end up being friends and her old resentment came around and she started making him uncommfortable, than they stopped hanging out
