Broccoli Ben

Never clicked so fast in my life

PSUB

I waited patiently for this moment

Broccoli Ben

The way they are building up Caleb’s story is incredible, I can’t wait for the rest of the party

Teib _21

He looks more like Roku to me then Ozai, especially the beard.

Jacob Funckes

The way Caleb killed Owelia really reminded me of Roy Mustang.

Adam

Roku was still Fire Nation.

Teib _21

Yeah I agree with the fire nation thing.

BizarroPhoenix

The "I am the parent" moment is amazing and they translated it so well from the original campaign. Powerful stuff

StorytellerDave

The asparagus is for Caleb's family barbeque or?

RedJack52

The main reason why Caleb is so desperate for spell components is because he is burdened by guilt from his past. To use his mana infused arms is to go back to the way he was and what he has always shunned himself for. A monster.

Adam

Makes sense, honestly, smug little shit who hurts/kills your friends, and you have an insane amount of literal fire power and just unload on it. Incidentally, Roy and Lust's Actors are IN this (as Jester and Fjord, iirc). Pretty sure Laura and Travis were their VAs for FMA/FMAB

Sam Marsh

The scene with Caleb incinerating Orwelia instantly reminded me of Roy Mustang's crash out on Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Also, when Caleb said his magic was taken from him, I don't think he meant it literally. I think his trauma and the resulting mental breakdown caused him to be a shell of his former self, but he is slowly recovering.

Jacob Funckes

32:50 I think it's less Fjord being racist and more him just being in incredible pain from the poison, thus making him irritable.

Nick

Crazy that Caleb killed his whole family and threw them under the bridge

Nick

exactly same

MikeT54

Being brainwashed and borderline groomed to have blind loyalty to not just the empire but to trent will do that. I won’t say spoilers from the campaign but trent is one of my favorite CR villains because he’s not just evil for evils sake, he genuinely makes you think you’re doing the right and just thing. Master manipulator. Not even using magic to manipulate just his charm and intellect.

Ink Magus

Why is this video player such absolute garbage? It's all but impossible to watch on a phone.

WillGlacier

That's just you bud, mine works great

Harnson

Y "What do you mean Caleb killed his whole family?" N "Ah, that's just a figure of speech where I come from."

Jack Swift

not a spoiler just observation but i think the crystals in calebs arm worked in place of the material components like the hair and nightmare bat-things poop from episode 1, so he still has the knowledge but now needs things to cast magic and some of those are expensive when you look at the spell list of dnd

Goobert

Or his master ripped the gems out of his arms which work as components for Volstruckers, hence making him unable to cast the magic he once did

PurportedGrey

Nah, it is awful trying to watch on your phone, If I have to stop and lock my phone to do something at work, I have to restart the entire video and find precisely where i left off. That's why I usually just wait to get home and watch on my computer.

PurportedGrey

In this case it's definitely not racism, and just his annoyance at this kleptomaniac troll always starting shit with him, but it's a hilarious dynamic in the actual campaign.

PurportedGrey

From my understanding this campaign was a way for 2 pairs of players to recreate their relationships in game with their characters. So the main one is Travis/Fjord and Laura/Jester recreating their love. Then you have Sam/Nott and Liam/Caleb recreating their +20 year long friendship with Nott and Caleb! And the Goblin hate comes from the fact Goblins in DnD are literally uncivilized creatures that attack anything on site in 99% of the time when encountered. So it is racism sadly, but literally everyone (human, Elf, Dwarf, Gnome, etc.) would be weary of a goblins seeing as they kill so many people in universe, same goes for Kobolds and other creatures like them. There's a reason Goblin Slayer is Goblin Slayer lol

King'sBard

I don't know how she didn't cry during the Ermendrud Family BBQ, I was BAWLING when I watched it, maybe because she was still bantering with Ant idk.

Geth Who

This was a TOUGH watch for wife and I. We love our cat deeply, and she's got a phobia of maggots.

Hoozzah

i dont watch on phone but streamable has abysmal speeds for me so I have to download the episodes with a streamable downloader to watch them, if you can do that i'd recommend it. you can just delete it after

RedRam-Ipsen

You can definitely hear hints of Illidan in Calebs voice from time to time Which makes sense since it's the same voice actor... 😆

Narluga

Goblins are technically a monster lol if i remember correctly they're pretty much considered enemies by most civilizations though it has been awhile since i kept up with dnd.

Aliulo

"Do we really trust the goblin?" asked the *orc* to the *tieflings*.

Tazman524

apparently Calebs VA in japan dub is Roy Mustang himself so i have to watch that one.

FellwindXCII

This episode hits 10x harder if you've watched the campaign and know what Caleb's goal is.

Purist

As much as I enjoy Vox Machina, I think I'm liking The Mighty Nein way more. Characters feel deeper, more complex, more morally diverse. It might be because we see the group's first meeting and them finding their feet with each other, where in Vox Machina they were already a tight-knit group, with fewer flare-ups (Percy's vendetta and devilish bargain is the only one I can think of). Soooo... We have an (ex?) Magic SS officer in our party, a carnie blood sorcerer, a pirate midshipman who made a pact with Cthulu, a crazy (?) teifling who is super adorable and must be protected, a monk skilled in the art of Not Giving Any Fucks, with a major in Beating Shit The Fuck Up, (side tangent: I reeaally want to know more about her secret society Knights Templar or whatever their deal is, cause they guard knowledge, but also have agents to do missions? To what end? Curious...) and to round it all off, a drunkie goblin (Weirdly, the most normal of the bunch, though even she has depth and richness i expect). I eagerly await the next episode!

Honor Rosenfeld

Fun fact, Nott's speech about Caleb being "her boy" is basically verbatim what Sam said during the campaign. It was so good the writers didn't see any reason to change it🥰

Andy me

It's the pattern of a D+D group your first game together you tend to stick to tropes, because it's safe. Second games well... now ya know what the others like and don't you spread your wings and experiment

Malcorpse

Nowadays all the humanoid monsters (goblins, bugbears, etc.) are considered morally neutral to help that they are all playable races now. Doesn't mean there isn't still racism though.

Egregore

I think they might also have some metamagic features since they sometimes cast their spells with verbal and somatic components or change their properties like sorcerers can.

Egregore

It kinda freaked me out that fire nation wizard could somehow heal himself with magic and cast spells nonverbally without spell scrolls or a magic item; cause wizards don’t normally have access to any healing spells and none of their features let them cast spells at will… Unless he’s secretly a necromancer with a bag of rats under that cloak…

Egregore

A tale as old as time

Kale

True but also it doesn’t cover all things. In ep 1 and in the fights against Orweila, the volstrukers used components and somatic chants and symbol drawing. (ex. Orweila munching on maggots). So the crystals offer innate abilities (like their mana weapons they can manifest), but still for other spells they need a follow up component. Yay magic systems are so fun !!!!

BakaSama

This Episode I think cemented the Mighty Nein over Vox Machina in my mind. I don’t mean to disparage Vox Machina at all, it’s just this feels so much deeper and visceral and this episode just really drove that home for me. Also, I’m pretty sure the black dude was the Volstrucker that got absorbed by the Beacon in Episode 1.

Andy me

Also wanted to say to the folks in the Chat asking for chat to be Dungeoned for this Eppy knowing just how easy it would be to accidently spoiler.... Full Kudos you guys are awesome, and deserve all the credit in the world. Keeping it safe for Alicia and Ant to enjoy the amazing episode

Amorphous rodent

Kale leif, It's all to do with the D&D this is based off of, where different spells can require up to 3 types of components (Verbal, Somatic, Material), unless you have some ability or feature that allows you to bypass those requirements. Some spells, usually simple ones, only ever need Verbal components (Chanting) or Somatic components (Hand movements), but more complex / powerful spells will require material components or some kind of focus to substitute, like a wand or the residuum crystals. Even more powerful spells still will often require components that cannot be substituted in any way, such as valuable diamonds or monster parts. In this case, the residuum (which in Exandria acts as a magic amplifier, hence its use in empowering the Volstrucker) will still amplify the spells cast, but as the Material component is vital to the casting of the spell, it is still required.

The Lazy Gamer

Yeah if she was watching by herself she probably would have been more emotional.

Greyman20

Welcome to the M9 trauma

Mantis

I’m so excited for some other banger lines to be said in this show

Drailvarr R2Q5

Nope. That was Dain. Wulf is still alive

FellwindXCII

Because it was a cat and not a dog tbh lol

StorytellerDave

There's a really good Caleb fan song on youtube called Bright - by Lili Furfaro in case anyone wants to dip back into the trauma

Fobbles

Indeed that IS concerning isn’t it… 👀

Fobbles

Shhhh 🤫 Careful now :3

Fobbles

GAH I just KNEW it’d be the BEST! Man I love Caleb. He’s so cool

Fobbles

Also hey! DnD Lore! 🔥 All the spells we see in this episode are actual spells in DnD. From “Stinking Cloud” to “Earthen Grasp” to “Dancing Lights” and “Burning Hands”, “Mending”, and even “Flame Strike” at the very end! I often play wizards so I was that meme of DiCaprio pointing the whole episode 😂

Goobert

She literally owns a cat, wtf are you on about

StorytellerDave

It's always fun to hunt for spells in Vox Machina and the Mighty Nein. Sometimes it's a bit more disguised or used for other purposes too, like Jester is using spirit guardians, that's her hamster unicorns, her lolipop is her spiritual weapon.

Arawn Lightwalker

Am I the only one who felt like the real emotional moments got talked and joked over?

PSUB

I love the little detail that the Volstrucker refer to Trent as their father, it's just so delightfully cultish! 😄

PSUB

Spoiler!

PP82

Not Caleb's, Fjord's. Travis Willingham is Roy Mustang.

PP82

Caleb's partners in Volstrucker training (as well as being his teammates once they graduated the training and became Volstrucker) were two of the Volstrucker who stole the Luxon Beacon in the first episode. Astrid was the Team Leader. They were also in the room during the experiments.

Jacob Funckes

When Alicia is with others she does that sometimes.

Sturstryk

Concerning Caleb "losing" his magic, this isn't so much that someone metaphysically stole it from him. Caleb has always needed to use material components for most of his spells (though not all: some don't require materials but instead specific words and/or gestures). This is more of a justification for why Caleb, a former badass wizard assassin, starts the campaign at level 1. And it's a combination of lack of materials, mental blocks due to his complete mental breakdown, and no longer having his former spell book that held the specific details needed to prepare more powerful spells. As crispy fried volstruker said, Caleb was in a sanatarium and barely able to string together a sentence after he killed his family, and that kinda reset him back to baseline with just the memories of what he was once able to do. And yeah, Trent did that to him, though not intentionally ... as if that matters.

FellwindXCII

Im making a joke because everything she's watched with a dog in it example the John Wick movies queued and immediate visceral response from her. But not the cat literally clawing for its life as it was burning to death. Nott that serious.

2026-10-07 05:00 I was assuming that "took it" meant that Trent ripped the Residium Crystals that made his magic stronger out of his arms (In addition to the other things you mentioned), I don't see his arms glowing green like the other Volstruckers (Though maybe it's just hard to tell because of all the fire changing the lighting). I could be wrong though.

Taylor Jane

Please delete this, why would you intentionally spoil things. Don't be rude

Goobert

Not 'intentionally spoiling' anything and i disagree that its a spoiler considering the shows make it pretty obvious, but i'll bring the comment down just in case.

OpossumGoblin

Not regarding his amulet and being spyd on In DND some magic casters can scry (magically look for anyone) as long as they know who your looking for the amulet protected him against scrying magic in general and it wasn't connected with the green glass(residue) he had put in him then removed

Hellguin

Bren pulled a god damn Roy Mustang on her o.o

The Dragon’s Lair

Oh, you have no idea the depths the Mighty Nein go to. Side tangent, the teaser for the next season of Vox Machina shows them about to raid a Cobalt Soul vault for information on the Whispered One (teased in season 1). So they are raiding Beau's group as part of a heist.

The Dragon’s Lair

It wasn't really about that. Basically they finished one campaign and were all looking forward to another. Laura asked Travis why he didn't do romance in D&D and he basically said he didn't care for it. He was there for the combat, the fun times and just having a good time with the friends, so Laura told him that she'd romance him. Then told him that if he continued his commitment to not roleplay romance in D&D he'd have to turn down his wife.

PurportedGrey

I kinda did say that in a wrong way, by making it seem like it was planned from the beginning, but there is a video with Sam and the crew saying this is the reason why they played/acted the way they did I'm on like Ep.50 of Campaign 1, so I don't really know the dynamics in game for Campaign 2 aside from stuff that pops up on my feed that's from during or after Campaign 2.

Purist

Oooooh, can't wait for that!

Vegvisir92

thats almost always the case when Alicia does collabs....90% of the time.. they complete change her reactions from her solo ones....i don't want to to be mean...but i feel she almost 'puts it on' when she collabs... meaning she isn't herself and deliberately acts different when she's with others Judging from her solo reaction compared to collabs...she would have definitely acted different if she watched Star Wars or the other Hobbit movies solo..she seriously changed up from Hobbit 1 (solo) to 2 and 3 (collab)

DrCatspaw

I was thinking the same thing

Hellguin

now if only it was Travis voicing Bren.

The Force

Now now ant, he's not playing a German, he's a Zemnian, get it right xD

Gobbo

Ugh, glad I saw this before watching. I hate when she does that. Like, if you aren't gonna pay attention then why even watch it? The fact that it's an episode like this makes it even worse. Is this vid even worth watching?

Micah Clark

What his this show’s obsession with threesoms, it’s fucking weird

Vegvisir92

the fact that its 2026 and your simple feeble mind can't accept polyamory is whats fucking weird
