One day, having watched the first season, I decided to just check the current chapter of Jujetsu Kaisen, and it was this Episodes. And I was absolutely hooked. I had no context for it, again, having only watched the first season at the time, but I started following the Manga from there on. And it was glorious. Honestly reminds me of Madara vs the Shinobi Army in Naruto. Which also gets incredibly personal with the beatdown one many inflicts on an army, instead of just going "GIANT WAVE ATTACK".

The entire series could have been so different if Naoya was raised humble and abused his speed to cut people. Even Maki needed time to get used to his technique, so he could have gotten probably several critical slashes on someone who actually can die of blood loss.

Holy crap. This was amazing. I tried watching this over on Crunchyroll first, but their subtitles weren’t working, so this reaction was even more appreciated than usual. I already liked Maki, but damn this episode gave her mega points in my book. I just wish it hadn’t come at the cost of Mai…That made me tear up.

Every time Maki has been on screen aura farming I left disappointed. Every time she looked like she was going to pull a Toji and she never did. (even in this episode the first time against her dad) THIS. IS. CATHARSIS. Also also, Luffy vs Bellamy vibes. and I love it.

man, Gege doesn't like writing his female characters but with this one subplot examining the patriarchy and traditional Japanese society, it really does hit hard to watch it come full circle with Naoya dying to Maki's mother stabbing him in the back as he pathetically crawls away

Except it was confirmed in Q&A by Gege that Naobito is way stronger than Ogi so even if Maki and Mai came out right he would have still been passed over because Naobito was just straight up better than him

You can interpret Maki and Mai as two geese without reeds, both doomed to die on the journey. Mai sacrifices herself, giving Maki a reed so that one of them can survive.

its even better because there are reed patches along the migration route because some geese die during the journey, the seeds they ate then grow into the new patches. So when the geese go on their return journey they are fed by the patches of reeds grow from their deceased members of the flock. This refelects Mai helping her sister by thorugh deathm jjust as the dead geese help their flock carry on.
