Yeeeeaaahhh, this episode was rough. i'm interested in Alicias opinion, but otherwise this could have been an email (apart from the last few minutes)

Icy

Sadly I heard 90% of this ep is not in the comics, all the demon stuff is original to the show

Ranginald Vagel

I’ve never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer, yet the helmet bit fits my perception of the kind of series that it is

6CatsInAnAlley

William’s new voice actor made me do a double take, he just sounds like a stereotypical gay guy now

PurportedGrey

This wasn’t a bad episode by any means, but for me it’s easily the weakest in the series so far. I still enjoyed it. Almost every episode of Invincible has been in the 8-10 range for me, so a 7/10 isn’t some sign the show is going downhill like the trolls and grifters are pushing. It just stands out because of how strong everything else has been. Most of my issues come down to how out of place it feels right now. With Nolan potentially returning at any moment (before this episode), the pacing feels like it slows things down at the wrong time. This kind of story would have fit better in S3 Ep.5s slot or even Ep.1 of this season or in a future season (since the original story was cut from issue 107 which is like S6 with the rate we're going), when things were less intense and building to one of the biggest moments of the entire series plot. The other major problem I have is that the episode also lacks much resolution and leans heavily into setup for Satan to come to the surface in like S5/6 or something. That said, it still adds interesting ideas and commentary (looking at you Marvel), especially with the Hell backstory, and it also has some meaningful development/healing for Mark. Overall, it's still a solid episode, just one that feels a bit misplaced compared to the rest.

Ali

what are you genuinely on about this ep was great

Ali

not that sad, as someone who has read the comics this was a great ep regardless of it being original to the show

Mr.Mystery

I liked the episode but it opens a bunch of questions. Like we know souls exist as do ghosts, considering that mummy guy and the fact the crown was made of souls, so how does the afterlife work? Are you reincarnated or do you walk the earth forever or maybe there’s a heaven/hell that is different from the Under Realm? Damien and the demons don’t know everything considering Satan was surprised by Aliens existing, so there’s that. How about Aliens, what happens to their souls? Alien Heaven/Hell? Also Damian said to Cecil he’d go to somewhere worse than Hell.

Icy

Yeah but I'm only interested in what the comics did, I just don't feel like looking them up so I would rather watch this. I like an adaptation to be as close to 1:1 as it can be

Icy

Is there a reason he has a new VA?

Tobi131313 .

For me it was the budget episode, where they tried to save animation budget (super lon monologue at the beginning/ off-screen Cerberus fight), and because of that they didn't want to adapt the comic, so they created a sidequest to stall for time. I also personally didn't like Satan once he transformed back, the fact that there are like 5 demons, and a few other things.

Mortis

The author of the comics is the one putting all the new stuff into the show though. He thinks of the show as his second draft to do stuff he couldn’t do or didn’t think to do in the comics the first time for whatever reason

6CatsInAnAlley

No idea, it could just be as simple as scheduling conflicts

Grei Glace

I guess Mark really needed a low-stakes adventure like fighting a lava elemental in Hell.

Eric

Mark: Oh man, I'm feeling pretty low, but... I guess I'll be ok eventually *(A baby and his genocidal father coming back)* : Well, it might seem crazy what I'm about to say...

PapaMedaMacha

The whole helmet bit was essentially a jab at the MCU's nanotech helmet debacle, basically making fun of it and I LOVE IT

Yovan_Night (Purple Rain🟪)

I just wasn’t interested in the whole underworld plot at all, especially with the three episodes that came before this one. Seeing Omni man and Allen come in at the end just makes me think “Damn, we could’ve gotten more of that today if this side plot didn’t come in”. It just feels pretty disappointing to me personally.

BakaSama

I’m seeing that some people did not enjoy this episode. I personally enjoyed it, but I think that’s partly because I recognize this for what it most likely is, a breather before things get super intense (and I know there’s the whole Anissa thing lurking around the corner). I also just really like Damien Darkblood as a character.

DasBigUn

this WHOLE story line was cut from the comics because the writer of the comics was told that he needed to push up the reveal of Omni-Man as a bad guy from comic 25 (the planned one) too an earlier comic (comic 7 is what they settled on) so, sadly, the last thing we see of this Deamian DarkBlood is in comic 6 and we NEVER see him again. This is, essentially a "cut-content" episode. I really did enjoy it as it DID give hints and explain some things that never DOO get explained in the comic.

MarisoL

Invincible having an adventure in hell with all the mental struggles he's going through is funny. Darkblood is a likeable character. I enjoyed it!

AnotherWeeb

holy shit why did they make william suddenly adopt stereotypical flamboyant gay man voice out of nowhere? Shit jumpscared me

AnotherWeeb

why is that sad? Also yeah, none of the damien darkblood stuff that happens after the omniman vs invincible fight exists in comics. If you wanna read the comics just read the comics. They're extremely different at this point.

Demi

Satan saying "Violence of that kind is merely foreplay for my kind." gave me some major Team Fourstar Vibes from the Broly movie the Masochistic Aliens "Please let me take it. It's my turn!"

Eight

yeah he has a different VA now and I don't really like the choice they went with.

Gai Valentine

If Mark leaves with Nolan, depending on how long that will take, Eve can have the abortion and just keep it from Mark. Although I hope it actually becomes a plot line but this is a very convenient way to avoid addressing it.

EnderSlayer366

Out of all the recasts this show has had, this is the first time I've noticed and it is baaaaad

EnderSlayer366

I liked it a lot, because just like all other non-Viltrumite episodes of the series, it leans into the themes and character growth. Mark has been spiraling towards being more and more extreme, and ironically, the one that gets him to start believing in the good in people and himself again, is Damien Darkblood, a demon that brought him to Hell to fight with Satan.

EnderSlayer366

If it is in fact just scheduling conflicts. I hope they switch back, no offense to the new guy but that was not it. If William continues to be relevant, bring back the William from the first three seasons please lmao

6CatsInAnAlley

I agree. I like Brandon Scott Jones but I’m pretty sure they just chose him because he’s pretty much type casted to play gay characters. This is the third show I’ve seen him in and he played a flamboyant gay character in the other two shows as well

Hexx Gear

The Satan fight song is called Raining blood and you can play it on guitar hero. I freaked out when I heard it

Charlie baker

Its interesting how theyve done william, in the comics he was just marks friend who eventually realized he was gay. In the show its way more of his whole personality lol

AnotherWeeb

@charlie yeah, in the comics there's like 2 jokes about things he does being "gay" because 90s. then months later he realizes he's actually gay and nobody makes a big deal out of it. In the show it seemed like they were making it his whole personality and now this voice doubles AND triples down on that. It's really shit

AnotherWeeb

ah yes, the worst possible resolution.

AnotherWeeb

I enjoyed it right up until I heard william speak. Look at what they've done to my boi

AnotherWeeb

If you want themes and character growth from non-viltrumite episodes, then have you considered "Why the fuck didn't we get the amber storyline in the show"?

Gai Valentine

Right? I wanna hope that with everything we’ve seen from this show, this baby plot line will actually matter.

AnotherWeeb

I don't think we do know that souls exist. Magic does though. I think the mummy just bound himself to the world via magic. Creating a "soul" version of yourself via magic is very common in fantasy media and bro is very lich coded

Mr.Mystery

Satan said he forged the crown out of Souls, that they fuel him. He doesn’t seem to be the most metaphorical person so, yeah. Besides, Kirkman doesn’t seem to be the most DND or magic player so I doubt that’s what was intended with the dead guy. He is dead but has an astral form and can possess people-Ghost. Besides, Damian while being exorcised said Cecil would go to a place worse than Hell and also said to Nolan that maybe he’d find out why Damian wants to stay out of hell so much someday.

EnderSlayer366

Somehow, despite knowing the contents of this episode, I was still not expecting Alicia to at any point say "Thank you, Satan! Dap me up!" thanks alicia very cool lmao

Periwinkle Emily

Amazing show. Glad youve been reacting to it i love your reactions to and input on this shit

Periwinkle Emily

They did recast William btw. No official reason given but ive seen someone say it's bc the original actor is busy with Broadway stuff

Speed1247

I don't see her keeping either thing from mark. Outside of events out of her control preventing them from talking.

Silver Raven

Satan, Slayer, Raining Blood. This is the most Metal episode EVER! \m/

Darc Hart94

OK so the original mummy plotline is weird...this Damien darkblood episode feels like filler in a weird way because I don't think it was in the og comics, and the rest of this season looks like it's going to be the viltrumite war which means the shit that happens on earth might happen

Mr. Ewok

Hate to admit it, but I wound up skipping half the episode just to move it along, couldn't hold my interest this time...

Aliulo

Hell is real, space is fake.

"There's never going to be a good time for this, but-" *Smash cut to Nolan and Allen aura farming*

Yeah, the hell plotline would have been great as the second episode, but at this point in the story it brings everything to a stop for something that doesn't advance Mark's arc, or the plot. And the plot isn't even resolved, what is stopping Volkanika from just coming back two minutes after Mark is gone? But also, I will forever love the Ka-hor (however you spell it) plotline/gag. I look forward to him being expelled from that girl's body and back to his tomb, or somewhere new. Or hell, even him wanting to live a normal human life as a "female" from now on... oh god now I'm getting flashes of Ka-hor's trans awakening arc.

FoL

And I was wondering why the voice was so familiar. And him hamming it up too.

TSP247

just play "Doom Eternal OST - The Only Thing They Fear Is You" over the battle. I'm curious if satan is going to try to come up with a way to try to fight mark after seeing how strong he is when he's holding back.

Glasglow

People love reversing traditional morlity

Zelosxt

I hope he beats cancer. Love him to bits.

Twisted Fictions

The Hell plot is actually important to Mark's arc. Understanding nuance has been a BIG thing for him over the show. Nuance around Cecil, nuance around villain reformation, nuance around using tools created through awful means to achieve good means like with the Reani-Men, and nuance around killing. The nuance is literally spelled out in the Hell plot - torture is bad, and enjoying it is bad, but it and the people who enjoy doing it are literally doing good through BOTH. The nuance is the point of the arc.

King'sBard

But that's not really what they did, it's more "Demons adequately good but still a little twisted, Angels not real as far as we know"

King'sBard

I understand the joke about the Mummy being sexist, but I don't think not wanting to be in a body that doesn't allign with your gender is sexist, it's literally what most trans people experience to their chagrin, and this is coming from a genderfluid person who'd be fine as either.

Joseph CroenianGamer

yeah, the writer wanted to write this, he could not, if you read the interviews its clear the comic was rushed a shit ton, idk why, maybe to keep the interest of the comic readers.

Shank Mugen

William sounds different due to the Voice Actor being different

Julio Castillo

I don't understand why people think this episode was weak... or even the worst of the series so far.... To me... this is the best episode of the season, it manages to balance pretty well levity/comedy and seriousness... and it gives us pretty interesting and engaging world-building for Demons and Satan, as well as the things from the previous "five ages" of the world. I also think the episode had some of the best Dialogue in the whole show, Satan and Volcanikka were standouts... but Damien definitely carried this episode with his delivery of exposition and emotional stuff. I love when Invincible takes little detours like this, and i love the main plot with the Viltrumites too but..... is stuff like this what makes the universe of Invincible feel alive in my opinion.
