I think you're wrong about the second one. Man just wants to love her correctly but everything he tries fails. I wouldn't be surprised if the gf doesn't treat his ADHD seriously like Alicia does. Having a partner that understands your condition really makes so much difference. I don't think cheating is a fair assumption, but that might be my bias.

after hearing the updates, seems like the relationship problems are mostly financial, and for everything else man just needs medication. Low drive, constant calling in sick, overwhelmed by simple tasks, definitely needs adhd and depression meds

Right. Most appositives use commas. Em dashes (—) are an accepted way to create an appositive when you want to emphasize the phrase between the dashes. A regular old hyphen (-) is not since it creates this confusion when reading the text. They should've just used commas here. The family description is not that important.
