Holy shit, WHA and so much Re:zero in such a short amount of time. We are eating good

Adam Lawson

That’s one of the best parts of ReZero. How unpredictable it really is. It has so many turns and twists and they end up making sense when you later learn about them and it makes you think more about the character’s actions and motivations more than it just being super cut and dry. It’s what made me fall in love with the series, Apparently even people who read the light novel don’t know tons of info that hasn’t been revealed yet or you’re forced to theorise on

Kenjaku

The fact that this was Subaru's first kiss with Emilia will always mess me up. His first kiss is the type of thing that would be so sacred to him that it makes this twisted version of Emilia granting it horrifically revolting.

Supreme

Early enough to say that it wasn't the witch but actually Emilia. She was metally broken because she literally had nobody left to lean on. No Puck. No Roswaal. No Subaru. Nobody.

Trenton Cobia

Watching these is like watching it again for the first time. Can't get enough

Cyber

oh no. I watched 9 10 11 in a row, and I thought there's 1 more today. AHHHHHHHHHH it goes by too fast!

And this, in my opinion, is the death that Subaru himself would say is one of his worst in the entire series. He can handle physical pain. He is ready to embrace hell for his friends. He even managed to accomplish a LOT in this particular cycle, having learned more about Roswaal and Beatrice. But having to live through a version of reality where he indirectly causes Emilia to completely lose her sanity, and then goes through one of the most agonising deaths possible while Emilia seemingly fails to even understand that he's dying... It's cycles like those that take the biggest tolls on Subaru.

KISS OF DEATH!!

Crofo

Not just being alone either, but being forced to relive a horrific memory, and failing everyone you care about in the process. Emilia is strong, but that would break all kinds of people.

yorozuyapetel

i think this might be one of the most fucked up ones honestly. its hard to scale them cause theres so many varying levels of physical and mental trauma, but unlike being eaten alive, this time he tried to reach emilia, while trying to run away from the rabbits. he obviously wasnt their main target since his mana isnt exactly in large amounts but they still nibbled on him. so then you have fully despaired subaru, half-eaten by a horde of murderous rabbits, arrives at emilia, and gets a kiss from her now psychotic self.

yorozuyapetel

not only that but he witnesses/in ways causes multiple peoples deaths through direct or indirect actions.

Okarun

LESSSS GOOOOOOOOO I HAVE SO MANY THEORIES!!!!!

Never fully clarified in the anime so I will do so here: That's Emilia, not Satella. She's just been driven insane. Roswaal has whipped up panic and isolated her so that she is essentially trapped in the Sanctuary forced to do the trial over and over with no support. Constantly being confronted with that trauma completely alone has driven her to that state.

grimreapercz

Agreed. I absolutely love this show for that. It makes me appreciate each action characters take and how they react to each other even more. It really makes them feel alive in a way I haven't seen in any medium before honestly.

grimreapercz

This conversation with Beako here is soo heartbreaking and is one of my top moments in Re:Zero. I love Beako so much, it tears me apart watching it and I just want her to be safe and happy. Roswaal's reveal at the second half of the episode gave me full body chills the first time I watched it. His reasoning for why he's doing it, surprise killing Ram just so he can kill Garfiel too. And he does it because he knows this timeline is lost so he doesn't care anymore about the people in his life. He did go out in a metal way in this timeline. Emilia kissing Subaru for the first time, just when he dies is insane and heartwrenching end to the episode. Add onto that the dismangled state he was in after forcing his way through the Great Rabbit just to get back to her and she doesn't even react...she's that mind broken.

Convergeman

First time I saw this I hadn't seen the OVA about Emilia's past, so I was really confused about Roswall's reasoning behind the snow thing XD Now in hindsight it makes a lot more sense to me why that would contribute to messing with her mental so badly

Justin Scott

Nooo don't remind me if the betrayal failure of Darling in the Franxx!!

CreepTun

hi hi, will you react to the iron lung movie??

DrOverbuild8363

Yeah, that pause was the worst and best time to pause, and that ending was messed up.

SlimeKingK

Emilia got twisted because she needed to help the people of the villiage so much that she relentlessly retried the unforgiving tests with no respite with subaru. Eventually she realizes that she needed subaru for the rest , to keep encouraging her. She continues trying regardless, and eventually subaru becomes a being on a pedestal to her, and she bottoms out and loses it.

GaimeGuy

Emilia mind broke herself by failing the trial over and over and over again. Everyone suspected her and no one was there to support or stand up for her, so she, desperate to help others and prove herself, just kept pushing.

GaimeGuy

I think the rabbit became distracted by roswaal's large mana reserves

Jae

yeah bro..Re: zero has so many world mysteries that to this day, there are still more mysteries lol. This is the only Light Novel I've read in my life lol.

Karatsuki

Love how Alicia makes a point about the anime suprising her constantly then IMMEDIATELY after unpausing she got another suprise

chronostorm

Every time. It has me go “nyeh-heh-heh-heh” every time, it’s so great.

ThatOneGuyToad

Noooo. I cant wait for another reaction! Alicia's introspection on this series is like fuckin caviar.

Umbra_Nex

One thing that is a tell that shows it was crazy Emilia and not Satella is she was saying "daisuke". While the english translation is basically always "I love you", from what I have been told its more accurate to hear it as "I really really like you". Satella always said "Aishteru" which is "I love you", but from what I have been told, the reason that Daisuke is usually translated as I Love you is because Daisuke is essentially what "I love you" actually means in English... We dont really have a good translation for "Aishteru" since that means a love that is so strong and encompassing that a good chunk of married couples in Japan never even say it to each other. edit: not totally sure on the spellings. xD

This is also what I enjoy most about this show. It subverts your expectations, but not for the sake of surprise or twists alone. It isn't telling the viewer, "Haha, you never expected that!" Instead, it's a show that is genuinely invested in its own mystery, respecting the audience and rewarding those who pay close attention. It isn't unreasonable in the way a boring twist villain often is. it's confidently and wholeheartedly intriguing!

YueTempest

You're actually the first person I've seen react to this, understanding that its actually Emilia and not the witch. Your confusion is 100% justified here. To make one thing clear, she's not just spiraling. This is a full on mental breakdown, she's separating from reality wich is why she cannot see the wounds on Subaru. In this loop everyone has abandoned her, she's been forced to relife her past over and over again all while having no Puck, no Subaru and no help from anyone else, she broke down and her mind is protecting her, at the moment Subaru entered her mind went into overdrive:"see he did come back, everything is fine Subaru is here." The anime did this really well but also confused a lot of people with the purple glow in her eyes, and the fact that this was right after the witch of envy spawned made the assumption completely valid. This is one of the most horrific loops I've seen and the fact that she acts so much like the witch completely shatters our understanding of her character. This episode is a 10/10 masterpiece honestly, also I love your reactions!

Skebaba

So now we find out why Puck's contract has the "destroy the world" clause if Emilia dies. It's basically a "suicide by cop" clause, since as Beako said, Spirits CAN'T self-terminate. 8:09 Holy shit I just realized how blursed her eyes look in that shot 😭
