The tale of the previous Emperor is series of a broken system and cycle of abuse. It is heavily implied he was assaulted many times when he was young by concubines looking to raise their station. He gained a phobia of older women. He then continued the cycle by abusing little girls. A disgusting tragedy all around.

Talon Karrde

Im both shocked the the story really went there with the former emperor and also really gave it interesting Nuance to it. Its all so dark tho. But so well done

Not going to excuse the behavior of the previous emperor, because there is no excuse for it, but in his case it was a learned behavior - first he himself was abused by the other concubines around him, then as a young and weak emperor he was domineered by his mother (empress regnant), deeply instilling his fear of older women, leaving him attracted only to young girls weaker than hiim, as we saw with Anshi (empress dowager), he could even be domineered by her. The bottom line is the pedo emperor was a weak and pathetic human being and a poor excuse for an emperor, one that nobody - especially those in the court - had any respect for, but also one few were willing to tell "no" because he held the title of emperor. And this is just another piece of the puzzle that this season has laid out for us.

Yadokari

Yeah its brought up many times he looked very similar to our Beautiful Eunuch. Those looks and station the concubines wouldve swarmed him like flies as soon as he was capable. We know very little about from what age he became the emperor, worst case he was a child emperor who got thrown to the sharks right after ascending to the throne. Abused and controlled by older women from early age, it is little wonder he would grow crooked.

Talon Karrde

What I love is,MaoMao can only connect that rock to the emperors death if she knows Jinshi is tbe crown prince. Which she pretends not to know and gaslights herself about, but obviously she must know it, otherwise she cant solve the mystery

AylaB

He definitely was a child, though we don't know the exact age. He only became Emperor because his older brothers died during a plague. The author did tweet about how his mom was unable to protect him when he was younger.

Talon Karrde

Its so tragic, but also Human, of Anshi retelling the story of what happened to herself as a girl to give herself Agency in the events that she didn't really have. She was just a child. Its all so sad.

ouhh i love the double foreshadowing they made in this episode about you know what. Damn, they really do be tricking shit everywhere without spoiling. also the callback to "you should hide your favorites or else someone else may take them from you." vs jinshi having his favorite toys as a child taken away from him and hidden so that he doesn't hyperfixate on a specific thing/person, ouffffff

Cyber

i agree with everything you said and i dont defend that guy. But there's also another layer to it: BECAUSE he's the emperor and his siblings all died, he HAD to "copulate" and produce new heirs. Maybe that's why they kept growing the rear palance to try to entice him, all to avail, because of his fear of women. So in order to allow the creation of a new heir to the royalty line, it's the people around him that indulged his fears and pushed him towards the younger girls after Anshi set the precedent that he's ok with interacting with her... they probably just made it seem like "hey it's ok, it's totally normal, whateveeeerr you need your highness, just for the love of god create more than 1 male heir just in case so that hte lineage doesn't end with your sorry-ass weak-ass existence." and his bad behavior was reinnforced. So as much as everyone was blaming the former emperor for his actions? which they should, the buck did NOT stop with him, and in fact it's his entire administration and surroundings that just pretended that everything immoral happening was perfectly fine, in order to ensure their agendas were met, or that their heads were not split.

What I love most about this episode is that we now know that not only doe sthe Emperor favor Jinshi taking Maomao as his bride, but also the Empress of Dowager. We can tell that both the emperor and his mother are very normal people who only want the best for Jinshi. And as we've learned, many of the women marriedinto the royal family were intelligent women. Maomao, no less, is very intelligent and would fit well as the wife of the brother of the emperor, of one who is destined to serve the emperor. Also, I can't help but feel myself tearing up through this episode. The late emperor was clearly a broken man, maybe from years of bad blood, And empress Dowager,I can't tell, but sometimes it feels like perhaps she once felt something for the emperor, only for that emotion to fade as she learned what kind of man he was. I fugging love this series.

Infinite Edge

It wasn't merely the Concubines who led to his behavior, the Empress Dowager states he was a puppet of his mother, there's strong implication in those words that his phobia is also a result of his mother, which is also noted in her comments of the former Empress Regnant's influence still being present.

Could you do three episodes next week? Since episodes 11 and 12 belong together.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that suspects/figured out what happened to the previous Emperor. It was never expected for him to ascend the throne, so for nearly his whole family to suddenly die of plague, he suddenly became the child Emperor, and suddenly have all these concubines hounding him and likely assaulting him, his mother being domineering and controlling, and perhaps... horribly, even his own mother assaulting him given his overwhelming fear of her. It becomes difficult to not pity the disgusting man he became. I feel so sorry for the poor young boy the previous Emperor once was. While what he became and his "tastes" are unforgivable, it's understandable and tragic how it happened.

Liberty

Yeah, it's not too hidden. There's a reason he feared grown women and the fact she controlled so much of his life, even having him live in the room she used to live in. It's said that couples that grow old tend to die not long after each other - like he did with his mother. It's pretty much a given that she groomed him and raped him as a child, then when there was no-one else who could take the throne, he needed to take lovers and ensure the lineage. It doesn't excuse his actions, but it does explain them. The woman in yellow on that wall was likely the current Empress Dowager, who he did care about but was afraid of (especially after she assaulted him, leaving his mind broken). It's sad in a lot of ways - the boy he was, the family he lost, the children he preyed on and the pain that an overbearing, over-'loving' mother caused to so many around her.

Liberty

Also, it's very much hinted at that his mother was the first to assault him and cause him to be afraid of women. The talk about how much she 'loved' him and doted on him, how his room was her room initially, that he died not long after she did... there's layers there. He feared women pretty early on into his rein.

Cyber

yeah, i got that hint, especially if he was a pretty boy like jinshi, and i'm assuming his own mother didn't resist the looks, and maybe that's why he survived an epidemic: while the other siblings were all parading around, having fun with other ladies or concubines or socailizing, he was stuck at home "tending" to mommy dearest, and kept him almost like a quarantine because she didn't want any other woman to see and fall for him, because she never expected him to be the emperor so she had her own play thing for herself. and if he was scared of most womens and in stockholm syndrome with her, she probably thought that it's even better for her,,, but then the other siblingsn died and the reality hit that he's the new emperor and needs to progress the bloodline, but she already broke him beyond compare, and the cycle ended up repeating itself... In fact, as much as the ACTIONS of the late emperor were horrible especially by these days and age, i think his intent was just to survive and to feel a connection when he was heavily abused himself... it's like blaming an untrained dog for pooping indoors or like a child that never learned social queues... he's mentally just a child trapped in a man's body at that time, because he never got to live his childhood.. and it's like trying to blame a psychopath for not know what's right or wrong... like yes, their actions are bad, but it's not their "fault" per se (up to a point, if they refuse treatment or behaviorial mechanisms to subdue it, like Dexter lol), but it's that they were setup to fail from the start due to their brain chemistry or envrionmental conditions... and I think, only much much later in life, when he finally started painting and expressing his emotions in drawings, did he start to feel a little more in control of his own fate, (Even if he relinquished his power to his mother... but then she died, and he couldnt take the responsibility and stress so that's why he soon followed after). again, not defending the previous emperor, but he was indeed JUST his mother's puppet... and if i were to stop the buck somewhere, i'd put the blame on his mother's abuse above his own actions, horrible as they were... But i know my thought process is not for everyone... it's a grey area for me, but not equally white/black grey, but more of a grey and darker grey area.

I somehow did not realise the fact that the Empress Dowager SA'd the previous Emperor until watching it here

Cyber

reminder for alicia if she ever comes back here, based on her latest reaction to s218: no one is excusing the emperor... he's a monster, but he was a monster that was enabled if not created by the people around him, and he was sick and needed help, but instead got enabled and pushed to act on his sickness and then double down as a monster who's unforgiveable.

jdoggivjc

Exactly. My point wasn't that the emperor wasn't a monster and he should be given grace and forgiveness - far from it. My point was simply that the emperor didn't come out one day and decide "you know - these little girls are so much cuter than the older women around me... I think I'll hit that instead". He was a victim himself and learned from the neglected concubines around him based on what they did to him that diddling children is okay... so when he became terrified of the women around him, he took comfort in the children that were offered up to him on a silver platter. Absolutely disgusting and he's a monster for it, but there's a reason why he did it.
