Loki (not that one)

I watched this just a few days ago and I’m so happy you’re seeing this!

DudeGuy

I was hoping she would do this one. easily one of the best movies of all time.

AJ

same i just saw it last week

slavicandsapphic

Ok just wanna say smth 10-15 degrees is NOT that tiny in terms of the earth cooling. Remember we’re worried abt the Earth warming up by like just 1 degree, imagine the devastation of going up/down to 10 degrees. It seems small but its really not

RussellSD

Okay did not see this reaction coming, amaze amaze amaze.

Jayden

the way my eyes went wide when i got the notification for this ohhh this is a treat

Schleep

Knew it was only a matter of time 🙏🏾

Dyllan Egilson

Oh my god. I didn't know how much I needed this until I saw the notification. 5th time watching, woo!

MarsMan

YESSSS!!! BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE

Hellguin

YES!!!! I just finished the book the other day and wondered "When is Alicia gonna react to this?" So happy it is now, especially since I have 5 hours of laundry to do. I got to see this in IMAX, I didn't know anything at all, completely blind, and it was such an amazing time Can't believe you haven't watched Toy Story.

AYOOOOOOO

1816 is referred to as "The Year Without A Summer" due to the massive volcanic winter that occured. There were mass crop failures, losses of livestock, and mass emigration due to the unlivable conditions it caused. And that was all a result of the average temperature changing by about 0.4-0.7 degrees.

Sam Smith

Stars. I wanted him to test rocky's cells to see if rocky needed water! it would have been so great to see that fate brought them together in such a way. or not. i just wanted closure

Ponyman1997

I AM SO HAPPY SHE WATCHED THIS

Daniel Jones

Looking forward to the Treasure Planet reaction!

Spicy Noodles

a 15 degree drop would freeze over the oceans in north America and we'd see heavy snow storms in florida, catastrophic typhoons and hurricanes in the summer due to wind patterns changing and we're already seeing that due to a 3 degree change in the last 50 years.

fuk yesss

The name of the Grace’s space ship is also Hail Mary, so when he’s by himself on the ship it’s the Hail Mary, Full of Grace.

40:10 Bull crap they're cheap. you want a cheap cut that almost always gets messed up? yeah you can spend 20 at great clips. But i go to a REAL barber. I pay for top dollar skill and treatment. perfect line up and styling. 40-80 depending on how thorough. thats including tip. Remember to take care of your Barbers because they take care of you.

Flip SkeeMalker

I've actually been waiting to see this until you did a video on it! I just finished dinner, but fuck it I need some popcorn! Looking forward to this!!

Dominic

We all cried over the rock

Rosinante

Literally just watched this for the first time on my flight to Tokyo last week. Elite pull 🙂‍↕️

bismuthalienated

Crumbs and dust are horrible in space, so they prioritize reducing crumbs. I believe very early space food was basically cubes of freeze-dried food encased in gelatin. Also, once an astronaut snuck a sandwich onto a mission, so that's fun. On a one-way mission though they probably wouldn't care about mess. It's not a ship used for decades like the ISS, make as much mess as you want to save the Earth then let it drift forever until it hits something.

Texasholdme

I just hate that, and I know people will disagree with me, that Grace's last experience on Earth was being betrayed, drugged, kidnapped, and sent on a suicide mission against his will. It's heart-breaking.

J.Gardner

If you haven't already. I recommend The Martian it's written by the same person who wrote Hail Mary.

Grimmkit

omg i didn't think we would get this for another year. also idk if someone has already said this but a complaint from some people has been how come both the aliens and humans are around the same level of technology development. and the reason is more advanced species would be able to fix the problem with out going to the star system and lesser developed ones would die out

Twiska Brand

Before they did the language exchange, Rocky wasn't reacting to Grace's words; he was reacting to his body language. Like when he held up the rings and said, "This is oxygen", it wasn't the words that let Rocky know he finally got the meaning of them, but him raising them up in triumph. Like he did when he caught the first message. Sure, he could have been wrong about what that gesture meant, but he is a smart rock and can work things out and make educated guesses, like when he previously understood to aim the next package at the airlock, not because he could tell it was an airlock but because he saw (on ship sensors) that was where Grace got in and out of the ship.

bismuthalienated

The reason Rocky picks up on the language so fast and doesn't have computers is because his brain functions almost like a computer. The way the author explains it is that they store all information they take in forever, like how a computer writes to memory. Their entire society has never had a need to make computers because they can do it themselves.

Infinity

Wow she's crying at a rock happy birthday.

KatoBen

Project Hail Mary was written by the same author of The Martian, and he has one more book to turn into a movie, completing his trilogy of space epics. Just like his work with The Martian, he focused heavily on making sure the science makes sense. Fro example, the ship makes it to Tau Ceti in such short time because the engines never turned off. They were full throttle for half the trip, then the ship turned around and ran the engines full throttle to slow down as it approached Tau Ceti. This is why there was gravity ont he ship before the Hail Mary arrived. Amazing stuff!

Twiska Brand

He said he made a device to translate whatever he pointed it at into a textured image he could read. "So Rocky can hear screen" were his exact words. That's how he can see the Earth room.

TheRealLoRider

Been waiting for this one. LETS GO!!!! Was looking on the court for it and that's how I found out lmao

Crescent Method

Written by drew Goddard, who also did writing for daredevil

Yovan_Night (Purple Rain🟪)

Cried four times in this movie and two of them were ‘cause of Rocky. That’s my fucking goat, man.

John

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!! also, you know the movie is good when the Yappiest reactor out there goes quiet for long stretches because she's been sucked into it.

supersparta333

It's important to note that in the book, Grace uses almost all metric, despite being American (book grace acknowledges that it just works better for the science he's working with). So 10-15 degrees in Celsius. Almost 30 degrees in Fahrenheit. THAT'S a big whoop.

Tenebris Narud

Movie so good it halted Alicia's yapping. Love this movie, it is so good. thanks for the reaction.

Fuzzbuzz

Just to leave a lil fun fact for you, Alicia, the cinematography for this movie was done by Greig Fraser, who also did the cinematography/direction of photography for Dune parts one and two, as well as The Batman!

xsithspawnx

I had a really stressful evening and this reaction was the perfect way to calm down and unwind! Thanks Alicia. Don't worry, I've seen this movie several times and I still tear up. ;)

Flip SkeeMalker

This might be my new favorite movie of all time. What a fucking experience. ty so much

Kenjaku

This movie was so good that seeing it made one of my homegirls, who mind you is dyslexic and does not read anything beyond visual novels, pick up the original book for Project Hail Mary and read it cover to cover. Genuinely up there with The Martian and Interstellar as one of my favorite space movies oat.

mr.bluesky

So does that mean they just restarted global warming after it was essentially on pause

Judah

Meeeeee!!!

Ronix

such a good movie

Judah

15:25 in the book they took EVERY video game ever! It's what got Stratt sent to jail!

Mima

They didn’t notice Grace wasn’t using a translator to understand Rocky at the end 😭😭 I love that detail sm

Joshua Garingan

Another way to put it: that's 10-15 degrees on a global AVERAGE. The equator probably stays relatively stable; any latitude that's not the equator drops 30 degrees. 10-15 degrees by any metric is world-ending for sur

JustRiver0o

Worth sneaking away at work to my hidey hole lol

WillGlacier

OMG SHE'S WATCHING IT !!! Legit one of the best movies this year, at least my number 1 pick.

BartonBelladonna

I have been WAITING for movie reactions for SO long! please let the movie watching streak continue! I NEED more!

Baindrik Morgren

Good movie, but not my type of genre honestly. Like, good enough that it was still enjoyable despite that. Give it like a 7/10. Again, genre issue.

Spicy Noodles

im surprised Alicia did not have the same vicirl reaction to the first grace space walk scene as she does with thalassophobia as they both have to do with vast, dark empty spaces. I fear both equally for the same reason even if 1s more irrational(fear of falling in space) then the other

AngelGxbriel

Seeing this as I woke up put a smile on my face, I already know the waterfalls I'm about to walk into

Rain

YAYYY I'm so happy you watched this. I'm about to start your reaction to it now, but 1 bit of info for people who haven't read the book. Rocky was alone on his ship for over 40 years before Grace showed up. He had no one to watch him sleep. Edit: So actually Grace didn't shave himself nicely, armondo got to him in the night lmfao. Also Eridians normally wear a little sweater thing as clothing, Rocky is airing it out with Grace at all times, also the fact that Eridians think eating is really gross and a private thing. Oh also the reason Eridians names are so long is because after they say their names the clan they are a part of is also pronounced. Okay last thing the Eridiands children at the end are called Pebbles, and I think thats so cute.

Miklar Sihn

It is worth mentioning that this is a 15 degree drop in centigrade. That is more like a 30 degree change in Fahrenheit.

Spicy Noodles

💀 wait ur so right I was using F° so this is actual day after tomorrow levels of worse.

N00B

"Panglossian" refers to a philosophy of everything being for the "best" in this "best of all possible worlds" . I wanted to mention it because this movie captures it quite well in my opinion.

CharlesBrodie

Alicia I cried too 😭 das a good rock

gaymer_toad

Let's gooooo! My personal movie of the year, can't wait to cry again lmfao

Cassandra

“He’s going to fuck that rock.” Oh there are quite a few fan fictions…

Jadedjayde

alicia reacting to my favourite film? hot and ready off the presses? not even having read the description? with a friend? dear lord i'm rubbing my hands together like a scheming fly because i just found a treat

Matrim

The global average temperature was around 59° F last year. 15° would put the global average lower than the average during the last ice age.

Cassandra

"I cried over a rock" Alicia that was a whole ass dude.

YorHaDen VT

So, from what I've heard, although I haven't read the book myself, the way they pace the story in the movie is exactly like in the books : we see the flashbacks at the moment of the story where Grace remembers these things. Also, during the years between Grace leaving Earth and the scene with Eva being on the ship at the end, she apparently went to prison because she cut a lot of ethical corners to get the project done. Another thing I heard is that the scene with Eva singing wasn't meant to be in at first, but Ryan Gosling heard the actress sing in-between takes and decided that it would be great to include that.

RussellSD

As with the first time I absolutely adore rocky. This is now my favourite movie of all time, before this it was Interstellar so I may just be a big fan of space movies.

Ranginald Vagel

I read The Physics of Climate Change, nothing is scarier than the knowledge

WillGlacier

If it makes you feel any better, the woman in charge (sorry forgot her name) served time in jail for what she did (also she obviously willingly got tried and went to jail because she felt guilty and knew what she did was wrong, even if it was to save the earth)

Levi Price

Very happy about the reaction. Little sad Pom couldn't make it. She has the same degree as the main character

BigKez0

Amaze Amaze Statement!

Demi-DW

Ha, you cried over a rock! But in seriousness this was a fun reaction to watch, loved it.

GamingHour2018

So a little spoilers from the book it is stated that Stratt would have been arrested by the nations of the world and thrown in prison the tattoo on the neck in the movie supports this. Also when Rocky and Grace got to Erid they had no food for Grace so they “cloned” him and turned them in to burgers so he ate what he called Me Burgers. And theres something else but I can’t remember. Oh also it’s my personal opinion that when Stratt forced him to go it broke her heart I wouldn’t say she was in love with him but she did love him

Judah

The worst part? The thing she got jailed for mostly was copywrite issues. She sent Mary up with every piece of software they had up to that point. Did not pay for licensing, and they did NOT like that.

One G. O A. T. One Dream

Clicked soo freaking fast! when I saw this pop up!! XD The ailens antonym is soo well done, so much cut content that really is interesting to know. I love how this show really drove into the detail of a realistic alien encounter. First time a sci-fi convinced me that it isent impossible for us to meet a alien race and not end in war. Understanding Rockys biology also really adds to you understanding of Rockis actions. But the most basic details is that Rockys species all have ADHD, and computer like brains, they also more like sentient walking hive mind ant hills.

One G. O A. T. One Dream

if i remember right they use light to engrave data into atoms of a crystal that is their brain. how the F that evolved natural is a good question but nature dose do weird crazy stuff. in the end of the day, not like our brains made of fat and cimicals are any less complex, and we seem to also be able to work with quantum mechanics in out brains. Like nature invented quantum mechanics long before humans picked their nose. So the idea of Rocky existing is so cool as it feels so real that its the realest alien in fiction.

One G. O A. T. One Dream

yeah its "day after tomorrow" but without the storms that reach impossible temperatures below absolute zero. which so funny, because absolute zero is absolute, try and go colder than that, and mater stops existing as all matter is energy.

aliciaxlife

yeah I totally just didn't know, but hell yeah that's cool to learn from comments here though!

OfficiallyGames

Now need to watch 'The Martian' - based on the book by the same author (Andy Weir) who also wrote the book this movie is adapting.

Ev

Literally yesterday I was thinking to myself “I hope Alicia watches Project Hail Mary” and today I wake up to this 😄

Vincent Price

I've read the book as Blind as Alicia was to the movie. I could not stop reading it, I was hooked. I finished it in 2 days. I've reread the book 5 times now. I've been looking forward to this for a while. Please just ignore my comments cause I'm probably going to go "ummm in the books" ass comments and it might get annoying but I LOVED it so much.

Random3x

a few fun bits: In the book when Grace first woke up he was very dazed and as he started to recall things he remembered he liked kids, like he loved spending time around them and he starts to get worried what kind of person he was till the complete relief of "Oh i was a teacher thank god!" The Wall in the Tunnel Rocky first connects to Mary each part of it was a different type of material. Because Rocky see's via vibrations he naturally assumed Grace would as well but wasnt sure what material would be best for this alien to see through. Grace naturally was draw to the clear glass like material which is why its what the second wall was made of because Rocky worked out it was the thing Grace approached to see.

Reilly Bolton

Seeing the notification this morning of this reaction single handedly gave the energy to do my shift happily. This was one of the the best movies of this year, of the decade

Shalune

Now do Everything Everywhere All At Once for 'cried at a rock' part 2

Vincent Price

29:25 Very sure the focus from the image of the people to the ship is to convey a message of hope. Humanity is placing their hope on Hail Mary to figure out how to save our sun. This scene hit me so hard as it places such a weight on Grace.

Vincent Price

42:45 OK to answer your question. IN THE BOOKS, they had to put all 3 astronauts into a coma for the journey as it was too risky to keep them awake as they would most likely kill each other from insanity. (There's are several case studies where they experimented Isolation practice and went completely wild.) There was a medial company that wanted to put people with diseases like cancer into coma's treat them and bring them out. They ran into the fact that only a very few had the genetics where their bodies can survive being in a coma for that long under medial induced coma's. It's very rare to have this genetic trait so the company shelved it and went bankrupt. In the book they tested every applicant and anyone who worked on Project Hail Mary to see if they have the trait. Even then it's still a high risk to do so. We don't get the cause of death for the other 2 as Grace theorized either an error occurred with the machines that was keeping them alive or some medical anomaly happened with them that the machines where not equipped to deal with.

fonz lopez

one cool thing about this movie, is the guy puppteering rocky read the lines with the idea they would redub him afterward. but the directors liked his voicing the character so much they just had his voice lines remain (probably rerecorded them) which is pretty cool. so he just gelled so well with ryan gosling they kept his voice.

KokoPelly

In the book, Strat had the Arctic nuked and the Savanna paved to buy humanity more time

Honor Rosenfeld

It’s not just a boulder! *sniff* It’s a rock!🥹

JuanmaRailgun

Thanks for letting us know this existed on the live!

DrOverbuild8363

Love Rocky. This film was great. But up until now I've had a little beef with the film because my mom wanted to watch this film with me and my siblings over the internet since we're states apart, of course I was the one to figure out how to do so, and every method I tried with a bought or rented digital copy on Amazon or YouTube would not work. It was a real headache. Everyone else just saw a black screen with the subtitles while it worked perfectly on my end, probably thanks to some copyright protecting code or something(which fair enough). I was using legal methods by the way. But because I spent hours trying to get it to work while we were all available to watch the film together and I couldn't get it to work on 3 occasions I kinda grew a little spiteful. Avoiding watching it myself out of frustration, even though I knew it wasn't the movies fault. I still feel a little of that frustration now because I also would've liked to watch the film with my family, but even with that frustration I can clearly state that this film was phenomenal, a beautiful piece of art that will become a classic in the future, and one that I really don't think should ever have a sequel. If anything it can be used as a small part or cameo for a multiverse film involving other classic films just for fun, but otherwise I really don't think we need a sequel to this.

Thank you alicia i watched this in theaters with my friends and man when i say that i damn near ugly cried during the first potential rocky death i MEAN IT but yeah thank you so much for reacting to this and have a wonderful everafter

Nightmareman99

I highly recommend reading (or listening) to the book. It goes farther into detail on the effects of the astrophage on earth, the anatomy of the eridians and their habitat, And the lengths they had to go to even survive the needed 26 years for the solution For example one thing they had to cut because of run time was them more or less weaponizing global warming. They turned the gobi desert into a gigantic solar farm to breed Astrophage. They Nuked the poles for years. They set off nukes at the poles to release mass amounts of greenhouse gasses to insulate the earth. Trying to conserve as much heat as possible to buy as much time as they could Oh and Stratt broke every single copywriter law and contract in the matter of months. She download every single piece program, book, theory possible just in the long shot scenario that they would need that information. Makes it’s hella convenient at the end Grace living on Rocky’s planet with his ship pretty much have every bit of knowledge the human race has gathered. Oh and because it’s an Andy Weir book just sooooo much math and logic throw in. From him having to Freeform where he is based on data (no map like in the film) to him stringing multiple programs together to make the language “converter” that he uses for Rocky. Well ted talk over. Damn Andy Weir books make me yap. Highly recommend you all check out his other film “The Martian” same deeper in science and logic type film with that same charming comedy thrown in

Azada 🇵🇸

She was taken to court, but I don’t think it was ever mentioned that she was sent to jail for that in particular in the book. I just remember there being a scene where she mentioned she would be imprisoned for life because all the governments would accuse her of abuse of power. Also, sad they didn’t include the part where they nuked Antarctica.

Azada 🇵🇸

This. I never read books. It’s very taxing for me to sit and read, but this movie was so good, I was motivated to read the novel cover to cover within 30 hours of starting it.

Vincent Price

1:51:10 IN THE BOOK! Rocky had so much astrophage to give cause their planet was so hot it was easy for them to produce it. Humanity had it tougher. to produce the heat they need to breed enough they had to build a giant mirror field in the Sahara Desert, that is covered most of it. completely transforming and destroying the eco system. They were able to have it earths giant power factory for electricity. So that solved the power problem we had. Funny enough, We had to nuke Antarctica to release the green house gasses to buy humanity enough time. Global warming had helped us ironically. Grace puts it "We fell in poop and came out smelling like roses." So back to Rocky, He said he had plenty to spare. Now fuel problem solved, Grace had another problem. He needed food.

Vincent Price

1:54:45 No only 3 were planned to go, they said this in the movie but I think y'all forgot which is easy as they said it while the camera was focused on something else. They had several back up just in case something happen to the primary crew. Nasa does this regularly.

King'sBard

You talked over Grace saying "200 years" before Stratt said "Please do it faster", for the first time ever I want to tell a reactor the pause more 😆

Vincent Price

1:56:30 IN THE BOOK! Making the chain that long was a nightmare for them. Took them a long time (about a Month or so) and it took up a lot of the ships space. The task was so boring and tedious it drove them crazy for a while. Grace said he kept having dreams about the chains links. In the movie they gave it a quick mention from rocky and I'm glad they kind of cut that part of the story.

Vincent Price

2:16:50 once again...........IN THE BOOK! Grace in his panic to not let Rocky died tried to help him but removing what he thought was an infection from his............orifice. Turns out Rocky told him that was his bodies healing itself and removing it was bad and made his recovery longer and almost killed him. I felt this part of the book was useless and I'm glad they removed it. Buuuut they did skip a lot of how Grace breed the Taumoeba, That is the one thing I really missed that the movie left out a lot of Graces scientific thought process. How he figures things out. But I understood why as having Grace monologue the whole time would over stimulate. I love the part in the book where Grace just woke up with no memories and couldn't access the rest of the ship cause he could remember his name to gain access. At one point he felt the gravity was off so he measured it and realized........I'm not on earth.

Vincent Price

2:23:50 She used a drug to cause the amnesia and loaded him on the ship before the other astronauts and told them "He requested to be placed in the coma early as he was to scared of blasting off into space on a rocket." She hoped the other 2 would have assisted with his memory gaps of his personal life. She figured even if he remembered he would still do the mission cause she believed he was that kind of person. She had faith in him.

Vincent Price

2:33:40 I love this part. Remember when Grace told Yao he couldn't be that brave and Yao said you just need someone to be brave for. Rocky was who he need to be brave. Grace had no one, not even a pet. But meeting Rocky changed everything for him. The story is about friendship and hope. Grace knew if he didn't go save Rocky, his planet was doomed. sending the probes and go after Rocky was the best choice but he knew he would die if he did. This time, he was able to make the sacrifice cause he had someone to be brave for.

sunlit commodity

Let’s go!!!!!!!!!! I did not expect this I’m so happy I have such a fixation on this movie and book and the fandom and content

JuanmaRailgun

A few fun facts, of things that are apparently mentioned in the book, but only hinted at in the movie: When Grace and Rocky first meet, Rocky had made a whole wall of multiple types of solid Xenon of various densities. The fact some of it was transparent was just a stroke of luck. Rocky can see through sound and thus through the walls, so the idea of transparency is alien to him (pun intended). But once he noticed Grace reacted only to what's behind that specific type of Xenon, he used it for the whole wall. Another one: the secondary reason Grace was chosen is because this scifi induced coma requires a specific genetic makeup. If you don't have it, the thing leaves you dumb for way longer than it would be safe. Grace happened to be the one in a few hundred. If they had a day or two more, they could have found someone better, but they were out of time. Also, in the book there's no computer translator. After a while he could understand Rocky like Rocky could understand him. They basically both learned each other's languages, but neither have the correct organs to speak them.

Matrim

“This would’ve been impossible without Rocky’s intervention” It would’ve been impossible without both of them. Rocky had been hanging out in Tau Ceti for like 80 years before Grace arrived, he was getting nowhere. It require Grace to do the science and Rocky to do the engineering marvels.

Lance Ivy

i hate to be that guy ....but the audio book is so much better i like the actor better

Aliulo

Holy goated movie.

Acisaac

ALICIA I LOVE THE REATION. GREAT MOVIE I RECOMMEND FALL GUY, AS A FELLOW FILMMAKER!!!

Rowdeemunkee

I just want to point out, that when Grace left earth everyone left expected to die of starvation amd they have a 100% renewable source of incredible energy, enough to travel 11.9 light years made in months. Energy crisis solved, but also basically nukes you can breed. I wanna see a show about earth after grace left, the political climate would be crazy interesting.

Honor Rosenfeld

Don't feel ashamed Alicias, we ALL cried over the rock 🥹🪨❤️

James LeBlanc

One of the things that the movie doesn't really address is that because Rocky's species is blind (They do address that they don't know about light or radiation) when their sun starts dimming they have to very quickly realize that not only is there a giant ball of heat in the sky that their planet depends on but that there are many such "Stars" and one is immune, before this their species would have no understanding of astronomy because why would they, they look up and can see nothing, no colors, no stars, nothing. However they go from knowing nearly nothing to creating a ship and launching it into space towards the only star immune to the astrophage

Spacefrog

Sometimes I hate my curiosity. ಥ_ಥ As soon as Alicia mentioned Grace was going F*** a rock I got curious and searched project hail mary on rule34. 164 pictures at the time of writing by the way. People really wanted to depict Ryan Gosling get it on with a rock. ~_~

Cloud_Clad

oHh hell yes!! Ive been waiting for you to see this one

Nate S

For anyone that wants to experience the book, but can't read a physical copy for whatever reason (like me with my garbage ADHD attention span), I highly recommend the audiobook. Ray Porter does a FANTASTIC job narrating. And while the movie did change a couple minor things (mostly for time constraints), it is VERY faithful to the book. So it's really nice to experience the story more in depth. Then, after the book, go back and rewatch the movie. There were a bunch of moments where they nod at the book readers but they're often so fast that you miss them if you blink. Or things you probably missed because they weren't explicitly explained/called out with text. Having the extra knowledge from the book isn't necessary to the movie experience, but it enhances it quite a bit.

Nate S

And part of the reason Grace's name is so short in the Eridian language is because they already had a word for the concept of grace (like graceful movement & such), so Rocky just uses that. It isn't a full proper name like the Eridians, it's just a word.

Abraxolotl

In he end, grace did find that one person to make the sacrifice for, even if he didn't end up having to make it.

bismuthalienated

Peacocks feathers are colorful due to microscopic structures bending light to create color rather than pigments. Nature does crazy things with laws of physics we just relatively recently discovered.

Nate S

In the book, Grace reports that they spent hours talking about biology together. Rocky does have water in him. And Erid, despite its high temperature, has large oceans of liquid water thanks to its insane atmospheric pressure. So it can be assumed all Eridian life evolved to use water as well. Something like 98% of his mass (168kg/370lb in Earth gravity, 2x that in Erid gravity) is inorganic material and is not actually "alive" (like our tooth enamel). But inside he has a kg or two of organic tissue. He has two circulatory systems full of liquid mercury. One at 210°C (Erid's ambient temp) & one at 305°C. He also has specialized organs that hold stores of water. He uses this water in combination with his hot circulatory system to create steam on demand which expands his muscles to move his body. Kind of like how spiders use hydraulic pressure to move their legs. This is also why he is paralyzed when he sleeps. He has to cool his hot circulatory system down to ambient temp so his organic repair cells can gain access without burning up, but bringing his temp down means he can't create the steam needed to move until he heats back up. It should be noted that Eridians are much more efficient with their water stores. They never need to drink liquid water like us, as they do not lose water to perspiration, respiration, and urination the way we do. So they can get all the water they need from their food. We look like constantly leaking sacks of water by comparison. Andy Weir made an entire document about the biology and behaviors of Eridians to help him keep things consistent, he shared it for public access if you're curious to know more.

I have never been so thankful for a reply. You gave me the closure I needed. Have an amazing day!! Those were some very interesting facts about the eridians. So cool!

There was no explicit mention of her actually being imprisoned. She was taken to court by a collective of copywrite lawyers, because Hail Mary had a copy of every movie, book, and copywritten program ever made onboard, without permission from or payment to the copywrite holders. Stratt basically said "I'm only here as a courtesy, I didn't have to come. Also, an international treaty ratified by the U.S. Senate grants me absolute immunity from prosecution anywhere on Earth. And I have a pre-emptive pardon from the US President for all crimes under US jurisdiction. I make a motion to dismiss, and I'm leaving." The Judge and bailiff threatened to stop her, and Stratt was like "You and what army? Because I have the US army," as 5 armed soldiers surrounded her and escorted her out. BUT she did say to Grace that as soon as Project Hail Mary was over, all of her authority ends, and she'd likely be prosecuted by many world governments for abuse of power, and would likely spend the rest of her life in prison. But whether that actually came to be is not mentioned in the book.

Upon arrival at Erid, he had to eat Taumoeba for months while the Eridians figured out how to feed him properly. Taumoeba provides calories, but he suffered from many conditions (like scurvy) stemming from lack of vitamins and such for good while.

Fun fact: Strat singing in the karaoke was not in the original script, it was Ryan Gosling's idea: he overheard the actress singing between takes while filming on an aircraft carrier set, and impressed by her voice, he and the directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, added the unscripted musical moment just 48 hours before shooting, they tried to convince her to do it, and she said she would think about it, later she agreed but only if it could be that particular one song. also, a few things in the book but not on the movie: 1. Rocky was drifting in space alone for 46 years before grace arrived, his kind lives for up to 700 years, and Rocky was 291 years old when Grace found him. 2. they did several things to try and slow the earths cooling, like a controversial plan where Eva Stratt orders a nuclear strike on Antarctica to release greenhouse gases and buy humanity more time, and they made a massive infrastructure project involving solar panels across the Sahara Desert meant to power Astrophage breeding. 3. the crew often joke and thought that grace and stratt were a couple, because of their proximity, how they "completed" each other etc, and the general concensus was the grace was the second in command, even though he himself didnt know or think it, and was surprised to discover everyone thought that in the book, when talking with the crew and they say it, thinking it was a joke and only believing when Commander Yao plainly tells Grace that everyone views him as the highest authority directly under Stratt. 4. in the book it was discovered a gene in the human dna that made the person more resistant to being in coma, and more likely to survive it, only about one in 7.000 people have the specific genetic combination required to safely survive a multi-year induced hibernation coma without organ failure or severe neurological damage , Grace is one of the few in the population that had it, that was why the crew was so small too, and so few were trained for the job, and why it really needed to be him when the other 2 cientists died. 5. stratt was given pretty much unlimited political power for saving earth, wich is why she could call the nuclear strike, make catastrophic changes to the sahara desert, etc, she also commandeers a Chinese aircraft carrier to use as a base and went around the world recruiting people for the project, including taking prisonners from jail and even conscripting a cientist against her will for the project when said cientist came talk about the 0G equipment and that they should use a centrifuge instead.

What an incredible movie. Now I really regret not seeing it in cinema

DrCatspaw

Wow. She's crying over a rock. Happy Birthday! KEKW

I do long the full cycle moments in this film. Him teaching earth children about sound in the beginning something they can’t see. And at the end teaching eridian children about light something they can’t see. Also how he was forced on a suicidal mission against his will in the beginning but he undertook his own at the end to save Rocky. The movie does underplay that sacrifice abit. In the book it’s explained that Grace only has enough food to last like 2 years most of that on sludge from when he was in a coma. He also knows he can’t eat Rocky’s food they looked into that when living together, his food is full of heavy metals that would poison humans. So Grace went fully knowing that going to save Rocky and bringing him home meant his death. It was by pure luck and an entire planets work that he was able to live. For years he lived off of eating the Taumoeba finding out he could live (barely) off of just them. And it wasn’t 3-4 like in the film he was there for like 15 years The Eridians had to develope genetic cloning to allow him to survive a semi normal life. And the only thing they can clone that he can it is…. You guessed it human flesh!!!!! Dude survives off of me burgers as he calls them in the book. They clone his flesh and eats that as food. And after him eating tasteless sludge for years he was pretty happy about and is like well it’s me so no moral wrong there 😅😂😅

I too cried over a rock. 😆 I’ve seen this movie several times and it still gets me. So happy you finally watched it.

Dorran

Even I cried over Rocky. Rocky is best buddy possible! Still, I love how well they handled the whole thing... yeah, it is a roller coaster of emotions, but it sticks the landing so well! I've seen other things that are emotional roller coasters, and... phew, this one at least gives you those moments of levity as it goes on. I saw one anime that I described as a roller coaster built with no regard at all for the comfort or safety of the passengers, but had a great ending. Still... that's not one I will watch again. Project Hail Mary... I will watch ANY time that I'm in the mood for this kind of ride!

Sam Marsh

I thought Alicia would be used to crying over rocks after watching Steven Universe.

Ja’Maine Lee

havent finished the movie at 1:20:29 i desperatetly need a reason on why rocky under stands grace so well

Ja’Maine Lee

1:31:18 you getting so sucked in to the movie makes me feel like we're watching it together cause i also really locked in.

KyleTheCinephile98

I love that Rocky is a physical puppet. They didn't have to do it, but it is AWESOME they did

Adam

that's because metric is exact. So it's used in science PERIOD. And by the US Military. Literally only US civilians use imperial.

Samuel Kramer

I tell people this movie is about two bros fishing

EnderBoy567

My jaw freaking dropped when Alicia thought the scientist was the same person as Captain Yao.

Elias

So excited for this one! I held off on watching it until now, hope its as fun as the book was!

Rowdeemunkee

I don't think i have seen a hero refuse the call so completely that they are forced to go literally kicking and screaming on their journey

YubarReingok

This is easily top 3 best movies for this year. Spider-Man beats it out only by a small margin. I absolutely loved this movie.

BlueHazard

Why talk through the entire song if it gets muted anyways. Those on YouTube won't hear and for those on patreon you don't even listen to it but instead just force some random talk.

Eddy

Not saying this to criticise you, as It's clear what you meant, but just for future reference, "my heart dropped" means something negative, like a feeling of disappointment, shock or fear. "Jumped" would be a better word.

Vash2123

Amazing movie. I never knew this movie existed. If they killed one of them 0/10 😭 I loved this tho. If you liked this then you’d like (The martian)

Samantha Whaley

This is probably the most perfect movie to me. I felt every fucking range of emotion

Backpack_Hermit

One thing cut from the movie was that there is a 'coma resistant' gene in a very small pool of humans. Grace happened to have this gene in the book that made him the BEST candidate after the explosion... Yao and Ilyukna simply died by pure bad luck and should have survived.

TSP247

Rocky Is Best Buddy. by the end of the movie we could have rocky have us meet Adrian rocky's partner.

Dyl

Second time watching this movie and despite knowing all that happens, I still cry like a little bitch. What a beautiful movie

D3m0n

Wow okay I have never seen this movie before so thank you for watching it together with me kind of. I understand the hype. Its great.

Tytan

It's crazy that the ship is call Hail Mary. We all saw Alicia cry over the Mary and now cries over a rock.

Spiral

The way this movie makes you fall in love with and cry for a fucking eyeless, faceless rock spider is crazy work. The puppeteers have some major talent.

danman14125

so, she didn't get the Adrian reference, did she?

LinkShire

I KNOW IM LATE BUT YESSSS!!!!

LordBeerusOL

I loved this movie so much. My sweetheart and I saw this in the Theater, but it's been so long, watching it again felt almost fresh. I love movies like this, the Scifi/modern day/grounded in some reality and yet never afraid to explore the possibilities, out in space type movie. I loved interstellar for the same reason.
