2026-10-29 19:00 Maomao really does tease Jinshi, and loves teasing and being teased. Hehehe if you pay attention to what Maomao says about her ideal man, you can tell she's purposefully choosing the exact opposite of Jinshi. Also I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked like mercury.

The novel series always did a great job of telling us the various emotions Maomao had after being separated from Shisui and Xiaolan, but, a picture being worth a thousand words, the anime is absolutely nailing it, making it far more emotional than even the novels were. We had already seen Maomao tearing up after receiving their goodbye letters (something she NEVER does), but in this episode we got to see the outright joy in her realizing that Shisui effectively left her a final mystery to solve - and her being an outright insect geek in front of her being the biggest hint to solving the mystery - and imagining Shisui with the biggest smile when she had solved it, and Maomao beaming herself at this realization.

This was interesting, because Joka was the only one of Maomao's sisters that she hasn't had 1-on-1 screen time with before this.

Alisha might be spot on with the mercury thing. There's an old story about Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, whose obsessive quest to live forever led to his madness then death from ingesting "Immortality Pills and Elixirs" made from liquid mercury, cinnabar and a bunch of other materials with supposed supernatural properties. Apparently a whole bunch of other rulers and emperors also died due to the same thing. Daoist Alchemists were the ones that devised the "Immortality Pills and Elixirs".

12:35 And the royalty of ancient China being obsessed with achieving long life and high virility is why Chinese cuisine is famous for it's health benefits

Nice to know I wasn't the only one who thought that looked like mercury.

Mercury was my first thought too about that "drink"... But I have no idea, why whould that be the case... :D Maybe it is somehow part of the immortality hoax, like "see, I can drink straight up poison, and I'm fine" or something.

The reveal that MaoMao had found the book in season 2 and the realization in this episode was such a powerful scene.

It is funny to see Maomaos family look on in wonder at her and Jinshi. Everyone can see how smitten Jinshi is and how Maomao is either blind to it or ignoring it. My theory is that Joka kind of understands because she too is asexual, but she knows that Maomao needs to sort out her feelings for Jinshi now since it will be too late if his interest shifts. I am wondering about the white lady. That "theater" at the end screams opium den, but it is far too early for the opium wars. The mercury could hint at the alchemy craze that was around that time, where alchemists claimed mercury as some sort of cure-all

As I recall, in the other material, they go out of the way to make it obvious that she isn’t describing what she likes, just the opposite of someone she hates (her father). The end result being the quack doctor is an in joke; the author has said that she finds men like that more appealing than the handsome or beautiful types.
